Got a ticket while being paced?!?
You make a good point and we all need to be aware of the posted limits but.......Many speed limits are very, very subjective. Some 60 MPH zones are left overs from the "gas savings" hysteria of the 70's. You remember? One day the road was "safe" at 70MPH and the next you were a menace to society for driving greater than 55. And that was before the kind of tires we drive everyday in our DD's let alone our state of the art C6 machines with super disc brakes et al....No, I'm afraid too much of our traffic laws are politically motivated and revenue driven. Still you make a good point and life can't be all about civil disobediance even if we are driving fun cars with lots of power.

Almost everyone, and I mean almost everyone including Grandma Moses, drives 65 to 70. When I did my gas mileage test a month ago, I egregiously selected 64 MPH as my cruise speed on I294 N. Whoa. Driving north to about O'Hare was almost OK at that speed, but after that I thought I was going to die.
Just too darned slow!So I speed, but what I don't do is 90, 95 or a ton in 60 zones. I've hit 80+, all too easily, but realize it and drop back to 70 +-. And when I have been pulled over (three times in 50 years of driving: 40 in a 45
, 50 in a 40
and 70 in a 55 - CA CHP paced me during semi-rush hour freeway filled with 70 MPH cars) I pay the fine and in the Cali case attended drivers' school. For my kicks, I can low or high speed autocross, drag, and attend track days and many venues. Then if I make a mistake, I will only hurt myself and my car. Just how I look at it.
Take care.

Here in Texas I can't go from Austin to Houston or Dallas without pretty much every car on the road going between 80-90. Minivans. Suburbans. Little cars.
And I still get passed on my Vette by VWs and other cars because I don't want to be the one to get the ticket..
We can beat you here in Ontario, Canada. 30mph is roughly 50 km/h, if you're caught at over 50 km/h, you risk a 10 000$ fine, and you lose your car.
What are you trying to fight again? Were you going 90+ in a 60mph zone? If so be glad you are not in a state that gives you a reckless driving charge for going 20 over. If you cannot live with the fine, don't do the crime.
Going with the flow is also a poor excuse. They might just decide to pick on you since you own the Corvette and not the minivan. Heck everytime I'm near Vegas I see a speeding trap where they have around 10 officers in each direction pulling over people. They just point them to the shoulder and you wait for the officer to come to your car.

I know it can be used just never got a ticket from such.
My question is, if the officer paced me going such a speed why did he allow me to drive for 10 more miles? Did he just feel like going fast too? I find it hard to believe the an office would allow such a speed for so long, especially since he said he was behind me the whole time. It doesn't make since.
I'm sure you would want to stop a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed as soon as possible. Not allow him to continue and possible cause an accident.

Also look at this: you are on a highway set at 65. Everyone around you is going 80. Is it safe to go 85? Or 90? Is that much different from going 70 when the limit is 60 or 65?

Okay, you don’t appear to know how he paced you and from what distance. You could request an informal discovery prior to the court trial to find out that info. There is such a thing as an odometer pace. The officer does not have to be sitting in your blind spot (that’s too easy). One can set their speed at your approximate speed from many miles behind you and check their odometer as you pass under an overcrossing, or pass a fixed object. They record their odometer reading and maintain their set speed until the next odometer check. You can repeat this several times and if the odometer reading increases from the original reading then the officer knows you are at least doing the set speed. The officer could increase his speed at that point in an attempt to determine your exact speed. This cat and mouse can go on for miles. Were you speeding? Don’t answer like Representative Weiner, NY 9th District. Just answer yes or no. If your answer is no, the take it to court.
Wow... to all you "man up an pay" folks: You are the reason they keep upping the fines and You are (partly) whats wrong with this country. Giving up so quickly, you should feel shame.
A ticket is an act of enforcing the law. That is not evidence itself that you were in violation of said law(speeding), it requires the officers testimony and verification of equipment certification(chain of custody). Without either, the case is dismissed.
So go to court, if the LEO is not there, its dismissed, no cost. If he is there, ask to see the chain of custody for the cars odometer certification and/or the certification papers. If they cannot provide the evidence, they are done. If they ask for continuance because they dont have it, tell them you are from out of state or its a burden on you and that the state should of been prepared, most likely the judge will not be happy the state wasted your/their time and dismiss it. If you dont feel comfortable doing this or dont want to represent yourself, hire a lawyer to do it(especially if you are out of state).
I have done this with 2 of the last three i got(over the last 10 years), i have no speeding record/points. BTW, if everyone went to court to fight tickets, it would become impossible for the court to process all the tickets without massive staff increases and the officers would spend half(if not more) of their time sitting in court. It would become so cumbersome, the financial gains for the cities and states would no longer look lucrative enough to bother enforcing(waste of the officers time and tax payer money).
I also speed all the time on the highway, everytime i am there unless traffic conditions do not allow it. I dont weave in and out which is reckless, just speed( there is a difference). I see the ones who try to pace me, i speed up/slow down in crazy patterns making it impossible to pace and they usually give up. One time i even messed with one so much i actually ended up behind him, i saw him looking all over the place for me then saw him laugh as he realized i was behind him.
Here in FL they like to use helicopter, i love messing with them, i will speed way up, then slam on the breaks right before the next line, making the timing impossible to figure out.
If you havent figured it out, i drive fast because its fun, not because i have somewhere to be. ( well there was that one exception when my cat was dying and i did 120 all the way to the vet ).
Oh then you have the LEO's who dont even want to bother catching you.. i was driving to NC through SC at about 2am, sped right past a LEO with KA(very short range) at 125, he never left his middle of the road position(no lights either).
Course, while i admit i like to speed, i am cautious of others and anywhere pedestrians might/should be. School zones, residential neighborhoods, no speeding. Back road, maybe but within limits if so.
oh i could go on, but thats enough rant for now(probably sound like some crazy guy by now).

Five years ago in western Colorado, I saw an obvious unmarked CSP car coming up behind me. My cruise control was set on 69 in a 60 zone, straight and level road. When I saw him, I kicked off the cruise and let it coast down. He pulled me over and said he had done a "short pace" on me at 15 over. I was courteous to him (I was an active cop at the time) and said that +9 might be a kinda c.s. ticket but would be accurate; +15 was simply incorrect.
He wouldn't hear any of it but "did me a favor" and wrote me for +9. When I got home to Illinois, I called two attorneys in that area and asked about getting some kind of court supervision or probation; to keep it off my record. Or simply going to trial. To my amazement, both of them said to forget it, even the SP in that area were all about money. And the judge was an ex-cop who would find me guilty in any case. Colorado had a point system for tickets and you got fewer points if you just paid up in a hurry.
You hear stories like this and don't believe them, but after living through one now I'm less skeptical.

I was in my Son's 350Z today and passed two locals standing along side of the road out of there cars. Looked at the spedo and was doing 29 in a 20 and didn't think to much about it untill about a mile down the road see the lights behind me. Watch him get out of the car with a real bad *** look untill he came to the window and saw I was an old guy and his expression changed in an instant. Asked me did I know why he stopped me and of course the standard answer I give is "not really". Tells me he didn't have me on radar but he figured I was doing at least 40. Asked if it would help if I retired after 35 on the job and my son was on the job. Smiled and walked back to his car and drove off. What bothers me about that is he first profiled the car and had no idea how fast I was going. Probably would have given a ticket if it was a young kid driving. No one ever bothers if I'm in the old cars or the Vette but they love that Z. Jim showed him your shield and he still wrote you?
"A Toronto man is facing charges of dangerous driving and fleeing from police after a rental car passed a speeding police car answering a different call near Fall River.
Halifax RCMP said an officer — with his lights and sirens activated — was responding to a call on Saturday afternoon when he noticed a car advancing in the passing lane. The car passed the police vehicle and the driver saluted the officer and kept going, according to a police release.
The officer then tried to stop the other car without success. After a short chase that reached speeds of 150 kilometers an hour (93 mph), the officer was told to discontinue.
Officers were able to trace the car to a rental agency and soon learned the driver’s identification."

WOW, what a thread, here is a story, fictional I'm sure, but the point is there. Lets be careful out there, let's enjoy our vettes, not die in them.
Read This Slowly
Jack took a long look at his speedometer
before slowing down: 73 in a 55 zone.
Fourth time in as many months.
How could a guy get caught so often?
When his car had slowed to 10 miles an hour,
Jack pulled over, but only partially.
Let the cop worry about the potential traffic hazard.
Maybe some other car will tweak his backside with a mirror.
The cop was stepping out of his car,
the big pad in hand.
Bob? Bob from Church?
Jack sunk farther into his trench coat.
This was worse than the coming ticket.
A cop catching a guy from his own church.
A guy who happened to be a little eager
to get home after a long day at the office.
A guy he was about to play golf with tomorrow
Jumping out of the car,
he approached a man he saw every Sunday,
a man he'd never seen in uniform.
'Hi, Bob. Fancy meeting you like this.'
'Hello, Jack.' No smile.
'Guess you caught me red-handed
in a rush to see my wife and kids.'
'Yeah, I guess.' Bob seemed uncertain.
Good.
'I've seen some long days at the office lately.
I'm afraid I bent the rules a bit -just this once.'
Jack toed at a pebble on the pavement.
'Diane said something about
roast beef and potatoes tonight.
Know what I mean?'
'I know what you mean.
I also know that you have
a reputation in our precinct ..'
Ouch.
This was not going in the right direction.
Time to change tactics.
'What'd you clock me at?'
'Seventy. Would you sit back in your car please?'
'Now wait a minute here, Bob.
I checked as soon as I saw you.
I was barely nudging 65.'
The lie seemed to come easier
with every ticket
'Please, Jack, in the car'
Flustered, Jack hunched himself through the still-open door. Slamming it shut,
he stared at the dashboard.
He was in no rush to open the window.
The minutes ticked by.
Bob scribbled away on the pad.
Why hadn't he asked for a driver's license?
Whatever the reason,
it would be a month of Sundays
before Jack ever sat near this cop again.
A tap on the door jerked his head to the left
There was Bob, a folded paper in hand
Jack rolled down the window a mere two inches,
just enough room for Bob to pass him the slip.
'Thanks.'
Jack could not quite keep the sneer
out of his voice.
Bob returned to his police car without a word.
Jack watched his retreat in the mirror.
Jack unfolded the sheet of paper.
How much was this one going to cost?
Wait a minute.
What was this? Some kind of joke?
Certainly not a ticket. Jack began to read:
'Dear Jack, Once upon a time I had a daughter.
She was six when killed by a car.
You guessed it - a speeding driver.
A fine and three months in jail,
and the man was free.
Free to hug his daughters, all three of them..
I only had one, and I'm going to have to wait
until Heaven
before I can ever hug her again.
A thousand times
I've tried to forgive that man.
A thousand times I thought I had.
Maybe I did, but I need to do it again.
Even now.
Pray for me.
And be careful, Jack,
my son is all I have left.'
'Bob'
Jack turned around in time to see Bob's car
pull away and head down the road.
Jack watched until it disappeared.
A full 15 minutes later, he too,
pulled away and drove slowly home,
praying for forgiveness and
hugging a surprised wife and kids when he arrived.
