Default Door unlock problem

2011 GS. Problem just starting to occur. Get where I am going, shut off the engine, reach for the door opener button. Door opens about 1/4 inch and no future. hit unlock button, same thing.

Finally pull door shut, start car, shut off, repeat. Use fob to unlock, same thing. Finally anter closing it a few times, it will open.

Don't like not being able to get out of the car. Next time it happens, I will pull the lever on the floor and see if that overrides it.

Anyone had this happen? Fix?

Thanks

Sounds like a weak electric latch mechanism, but Last option since the part is about $150.

Do you have trouble opening from the outside as well?

The emergency cable release should work without issue as that is an override of the electric part. Unless it is getting caught up due to the screws that hold the whole thing are loose would would cause binding.

I would first try lubricating the latch with a silicon spray.

Door lock assembly is dying. I just replaced the driver side in my 09 last month. Got it used on Craigslist. You can find used ones on eBay. Easy fix.

Why would you buy a used part that has already proven to fail, and could fail at any time since you don't know how much use it already has on it? Why not purchase new so you don't have to worry about it for a while?

Just like straight mechanical latches, they need lubrication and the factory lube sometimes gets dirty. Personally I use motor oil since silicone sprays sometimes turn sticky when they dry.

I use graphite spray; it doesn't get sticky like silicone can.

Because i didn't realize that there was a manual latch in the trunk and was annoyed at having to go through the passenger door, so I needed it fixed pronto. Plus, it was cheap at $50 bucks.

That's another reason why I bought a used one. Called around and nobody sells them. Most likely dealer item, which will.cost you an arm and a leg. Might want to try cleaning the pads first or swapping out with passenger door to rule out dirty/faulty door pad. For me, the actuator would sound weaker every time I try to open it, therefore, was the culprit.

It's possible the window isn't quite lowering enough, hanging the door up on the weatherstripping. You could first try re-indexing the window to see if it helps (it's easy and free).

Taking the car to the dealer next week to have the fuel tank sending units replaced. I guess I will just tell them about this too and have them take care of it.

For now, I'll just drive my C5 which has never given me any kind of issues in the 14 years I have owned it.

I had this happen to me...

Got to work and went to exit the car. As I hit the lock button, I hear a noise that sounded like someone stepped on a plastic water bottle. Didn't think much of it until I went to leave. Grabbed the door handle and it popped out about 1/2 an inch. Pushed in and tried again. Same thing. Had to go with the mechanical cable in the back to get it open.

Eventually found out the latch was bad. Purchased a new latch online and waited a few days for it to arrive. $250 and about 45 minutes later, it was working again.

Latch that I bought --> http://www.cultragfactoryparts.com/oe-gm/88956758

When you guys say you had to pull the lever in the back, what does the one down by the door on the floor do?

Same as the cable in the back. Mechanical connection that pulls the latch open. They are there in case of power failure but also help if the latch motor/gearing fails.

same as the one on the floor and you don't have to go through the passenger door like I did. just pop the trunk and pull the lever to open the driver side door. I'm a newbie, so I thought that was the manual release to the trunk and didn't find out until I replaced my door latch assembly. Duh! Why would there be a need for a manual trunk release when you can just crawl to the front???
