I'm confused as to why you have to leave the car in reverse with the 6 speed on the new C6 keyless start system. I mean, why reverse? That will be so hard to get used to.

If you have a 6-speed you will be putting it in gear before you shut it off anyway right?
By putting the manual trans in reverse its the only way to turn off the ignition. This is to prevent accidental shutdown(locking the steering column) while driving.
I already understood this. But why reverse? Why not first gear?
First gear would have been okay, but it's also a good practice to put the car in reverse anyway when parking. Think about how many times you put your car in reverse and how many times you put it in first. By putting it in reverse, you decrease extra wear and tear on first since you use it more often.

Except 1st gear usually has a syncro and reverse usually doesn't. And at Stop you could probably do it a few million times without wearing the gears enough to notice.
it's an old trick. On the old Saab sticks (and some not so old ones) in order to get the key out the car had to be in reverse. You learn rather quickly. It' also good practice (as someone sles said) to park in reverse.
Because, quite simply, reverse has the shortest gearing and, thus, best holds the car in place.
Scissors - we all know how passionate you are about this issue. But if this is why they are doing it, how come they didn't feel the need to have this "feature" on the C5's? And why does NO other car manufacturer force you to do this.
I don't know how the C6 six speed reverse gear is designed, but the on the 4sp T-10 and the 4sp Munice, the reverse gear is a slider. To me it would seem that one could design a transmission lock that would engage the sliding reverse gear to prevent it from turning and also from being taken out of reverse. With a transmission lock on the 6 speed it would elimanate the requirement fot the column lock. Just a thought.
In 50 years of driving, never had to use rev before and never had any problems. So my question is why and besides reverse on the C5 is a bitch to get into.

Maybe that's one of the ways the C6 is better than the C5. Maybe it's going to be easier to get it into reverse.
