Default Steering wheel replacement

I did a search, but couldn't find a thread I read here about replacing the crappy steering wheel on an 05 C6 with one from an 06 C6 or perhaps an aftermarket one. My biggest complaint about the car is the oversized, egg shaped steering wheel.

Does anyone have the skinny on what vendors may offer?

Will a C5 wheel fit? What about the airbag?

Ya know, US cars have had mandatory drivers side air bags since 1993. Are there any after market wheel mfrs making sporty wheels with airbags?

I believe that the liability lawyers have killed the aftermarket steering wheel business on late model cars. I haven't seen any for airbag equipped cars.

Ford has an aftermarket steering wheel for 94-04 Mustangs that requires the installer to swap the airbag (relatively simple). That is the only aftermarket wheel I've heard of.

I cant even turn the wheel all the way when im running at road course. My biggest complaint abuot the c6, we need one like on the m3s or 350s. Three star racing wheels that have functions on them and are small in diameter

WW that is pretty cheap, it obviously doesn't include the air bag but still, I thought they'd grab ya for over $600.00 on that thing.

I don't think the 2005 airbag will fit in it though from what it looks like.

Can the air bag be changed too? I cant believe the wheel is not interchangable.. Can a Forum dealer ask the service department for us what is involved?? Thanks

Sorry, but the 06 wheel is junk! The 06 wheel is the only reason I'm glad I got an 05. Every place I like to put my hands there's an extra fat spoke in the way on the 06. 3 spoke wheels are a pretty lousy set up IMO. Long live the Dough Boy! I wish they gave you a choice so everyone could be happy.

With the '05 wheel you get two resting positions for your hands versus one with the '06. Isn't the '06 wheel the same as the steering wheel on the Pontiac Solstice?

This thread is for people that are interested in changing the wheel , not for people who are perfectly happy with their doughboy.

I don't know if the airbag can be swapped, but I'd be a bit surprised if they used a custom airbag rather than a generic off the shelf product. That would be extra manufacturing expense for no good reason, and the GM bean counters usually don't like that.

Just because the '05 wheel is ergonomic doesn't mean that I like it. I'm just being the usual fair, impartial, objective, unbiased, disinterested observer of the scene. I'd like to change the wheel for something smaller.

I'm sure you can put the C6 2006 steering wheel on our 2005. BUT the costs might be very high. Remember that the wheel contains the air bag.

We'll know soon. 2006 C6's are being delivered to dealers in about 3 weeks.

So, depending on the costs, I might do it. But I think I'll just keep what I have.

I think you'll find that the airbag and the trim piece on the steering wheel center are one factory assembled component. So to swap the wheel you'd need to also but the 06 trim piece/airbag assembly.
