Default Popping on deceleration....a question inside.

I have headers going on this Friday at 21st Century Muscle Cars. I have a question with regard to popping (small backfires) on deceleration.

Are the long tubes themselves responsible for this popping, or is it more a function of what cat back system you run?

I have driven a couple C6's with long tubes that have pronounced popping after hi-rpm decel.

Or....is the popping indicative of a lean (or a tune related) condition?

I am getting the LG Pros, along with catted 3" x-pipes out to 3" OEM Z06 mufflers.

Subsequent tune to follow.

My C6 popped from the time I put on the GHL cat backs with x-pipe.
Putting on the headers later only made it louder. My car was also dyno tuned, so there shouldn't be any f/a issues.

that popping sound on decel, IMHO sounds like a TRUE american muscle car sound.

I like the popping too although I don't have any with my current setup. It can be tuned out/down by enabling/expanding the DFCO range. DFCO would cut the fuel under decel so no fuel to pop.

Kooks + Bullets= THE SOUND OF POWER
Lots of popping on deceleration which I thoroughly enjoy! A dyno of my car with O2 bung hooked up showed the AFR to be right on.

Thanks for the replies gents. I like a little popping too if I"ve been ripping through the gears (but not if my foot had not been into it).

If I'm just putting around I don't want any feedback like that. There's a time and place to everything and sometimes I need stealth mode. Hence the controllable z cans I'm getting.

With my setup, not only do I have major pop on decel but also is a flame thrower on hard decel.

Reid,

I don't have any loud popping, but I do now have some burble on decel with my Magnaflow 15886's that I really like. I think any cat-back that has less restriction than stock will burble, and the really loud, low restriction ones will pop. With headers, going with the stock Z06 system and the cutouts like you plan sounds like a good way to go. You should have some burble from the headers, but I doubt if it will pop loud unless the cutouts are open.

My corsa sports burble. That is my 2nd favorite thing of the exhaust(1st being acceleration) and 3rd being NO DRONE!!!

Corsa's with American racing long tubes.

Pops and gurgles. Awesome. Lets everyone know your coming. To the ill informed, they think you are backfiring.

My tuner explains that is a build up of fuel rich exhaust gases that expand quickly and POP as they exit the exhaust valve when you decelerate.

This is exascerbated by the free flowing exhaust and headers.

Hej Henry et al....good info to share. As for my set up I am not getting cutouts. I'll just have the silent choice option with the butterflys on the z mufflers.

With your cutouts closed you will NOT hear burble on decel... in fact, if your car is like the two others I've heard with your mod, you will hear NOTHING when your cutout is closed. Maybe some header noise upon acceleration (small pings), which I personally like. Those Z06 muffs are QUIET when closed and not that loud when open IMHO. Surprisingly, even my wife commented how quiet they are when my buddy brought his new Z over last Saturday. I pulled the fuse for him so at least he had a little sound!

But then my wife commented yesterday that she likes my new cutouts (real ones) as I tested them out yesterday.

By the way, I don't have much burble with headers through my Magnaflow 14336 mufflers, but with my cutouts open, it is snap crackle and pop. I have DFCO on (factory settings) so I was a little surprised by that.

What's even funnier is that I just ordered some black wheels that will make our cars look even more similar

You'll LOVE the way your car sounds with a cam!

We share 'favorites' but don't attribute acceleration to your Corsa Sport exhaust per se. Any performance gain resulting from the Corsa Sport exhaust is so negligible you'd never notice it. Every hp counts but (from what I know) you only gain about 3-5 hp from adding a Corsa Sport exhaust.

My setup (Corsa Sports behind LGM long tube headers and the LPE 403 motor) have a great, deep, muscle car sound....no loud popping, no drone and mild 'gurgle' when decelerating.
