Most likely going to buy a K&N aircharger today, I can't see it not making a big difference with the ambient air rushing directly in to it, especially while moving.
I also have two rain shields, I might try using them to completely seal off hot air from the engine if it doesn't look hack.

I've thought about something like that as well, I was wondering if that semi flat panel piece that Pipedreams sells to cover over the Vararam or Halltech (as more of a cosmetic thing than a performance one) would also aid in helping keep out some warmer engine air as well, even for those of us still using (modified) stock air boxes along with the free cold air mod.
Again, I never knocked those who like the VR or other CAIs, but don't think you can beat the Aircharger and opened shroud. The volume of air to the filter is higher than the VR due to simply having a larger chamber. The velocity may be somewhat lower, but the engine determines how much air it will pull in--so called 'ram air' doesn't increase that volume. And engine heat--underway, can't get to the filter--only outside air thru the grill. Plus, no f*&(%g around cutting shrouds and less chance of water intrusion. Here at 7000' with the leaner AFR from the Predator and the shroud pushed back, I can feel a significant sop increase at wot in all gears. Plus, 2 degree cooler running and much better off idle throttle response. How much is due to what mod, whogas. I am very pleased with the overall effect and that is the ultimate goal of any mod or combo thereof.

I think that would work great. CBRF, you have the plexiglas cover, come over and we'll do some scanning.
I bought the K&N #63-3052 aircharger today, will see what I can do with the rainshields when it comes in.
I have no doubt that the clear path of ambient air rushing up to that huge filter will be worth something. I felt a difference just by opening up the front to the stock filters.
Blocking off hot engine air would make it that much better.
Supposedly when the hood closes it blocks off most of the hot engine air, but just leaving the rain guard in place and adding an other in a strategic position might be beneficial.
If not, I'll just take the rain guards off and be done with it.

howard, the hood doesn't block off the hot engine air. even with it close there is still about 2" of gap between the hoodliner and the top of the radiator cover plate.

This free cold air mod is just another variation on the cutting of the (semi) round holes that you did in the nose of your manual '06, only this is less permanent/less violent looking.
Along with the the Aircharger it should definitely help at the very least a tiny bit over stock.
Someone posted this a while back, but I just got around to doing it. Pull out the two push pins that hold the radiator shroud to the back edge of the front clip. Push the shroud back towards the engine a few inches, and voila! Cold, dense air from under the car now routes to the air cleaner, in my case a K&N Aircharger. No worry about water ingestion, still max flow to the condensor/radiator, but now outside air forced to the aircleaner--not exactly ram air, but a big improvement over keeping the shroud closed. SOTP is there, and it has to be worth several hp at least if the Vararam is supposed to get 30. And the price: 0. I have a funnel of all things holding the shroud open now, but will replace with a turned down dowel to hold both sides equally open. Takes all of 2 minutes and no chance of cutting something you don't want--even the shroud. Back to normal in 30 seconds. Great advice!
