Ok guys I have an 06 A6 with ARH, tune, honker. A guy I know just bought an 06 MB SL600. He has a C5 vette too. He says it will kill a vette. I said its fast but it wont KILL a vette. We are to go head to head on a private landing strip approx a mile long. How bad am I going to get smoked?
Stats I found on the car after I opened my big fat mouth:
twin tuboed
V12
approx 500hp
over 500 ft lbs torque
0-60 3.6 I also saw 4.5 too so??
car weighs 4500lbs
Maybe i should have kept my pie hole shut.
I think this is going to be one fast german tank.
SL600s are fast but they're not as fast as the SL65, I did think that the 600 had a little more than 500hp though.
From a roll that will be a hard car to beat because once moving it's excessive weight becomes less of a factor and of course turbo cars love the highway rolls. But from a dead stop up to say 100mph (this would take place on a track only of course ) your A6 has a very strong shot at it IMO.
Either way, NEITHER one of you is actually strong enough to kill the other in that race.
sl600 run high 12's stock and top out at 155mph. if its modded, look out! if it is a sl65 amg your toast. I've seen alot of modded amg's in the 11's.(some high 10's).
The car has 493 hp. It also has 590ft/lbs torque. But it weighs 4500. I don't see how Car and Driver got it to 60 in 3.6 with an 11.9 1/4. 590ft/lbs at 1800 rpms = ROASTED tires. They must have had drag radials on the thing or been driving on super glue covered asphalt. There is no way they feathered the throttle and got it to 60 in 3.6.
I'd put money on the SL600 edging his C6 A6 out. It's probably as fast as the SL55. A few years back Motor Trend had a performance shootout and a SL55 literally went about side by side with a 405HP C5Z6 in acceleration up to the one mile mark. So based off of this I feel the SL600 is at least as fast as an A6 C6. 590 lb.ft of torque can't be ignored.
so then you guys feel that he will beat me from 0-120 but it wont be a slaughter-right? I'd be very happy if I could be right off his rear $160K bumper the whole way.
You are right--the torque #'s cannot be ignored. The computer(s) on his car are probably using every allowable ounce of torque possible but keeping the tires from going up in flames.
As stated above, the SL55 AMG is a very fast car. I suspect that the 600 is similar in performance. Similar HP and maybe a little more weight. You can't ignore the torque but you also can't ignore the weight. You have at least a 1200 lb. advantage. He will smoke you on the top end because of the hp vs. drag. I think you can beat him in a 1/4. But you will have to know how to launch properly. Go out to that airstrip and practice your launch and I think you'll beat him. keep us posted.

No, it should not be a slaughter at all though things might be slightly in his favor, especially in warmer weather IMO.

I had a little run-in with an SL55 in my C5 (only with exhaust & intake)
once.... I wanted to go from a roll, and expected a little bit of a break from the guy. He acted like he wasn't interested, and when I started slowing to go back to town, he hammered it, took off and then waved me on like "where you goin'? Come on!" I knew I was toast, but the gauntlet had been thrown down, so I had to pick it up, right!? I pounded it, but he was gone. He didn't gain too much more ground on me once I got really moving, but I 'ceased hostilities' at @ 145...... I think if you go from a stop, you really should be neck and neck... from a roll, that boost is tough. Heck, run him to the top and wave 'bye' once you hit a buck fifty five!!
I had a run-in with a CL600 on the freeway last year, and had no problem pulling on him from about 40 mph on up to xxx mph. I didn't even know what it was unitl I got home and looked it up and was shocked I had done that to him on the top end with all that V-12 turbo power he had. I was totally stock at the time and had a passenger, he was alone. He wasn't very happy
The SL may be a bit lighter, but you should be OK. An E55 might be another story.
I like what I am reading TT. I think the sl600 is 6Liters also since it is a 600? Man, the stats on that SL are pretty scary. But it will be fun, informal and safe. I am expecting a lot from this uber car
