His Vette has headers, my bet is the Vette will win. I give the nod to the Merc stock against stock, but not against a modded Vette.

The Vette will get smoked bad. Here is Car and Driver short take test.
According to this test the car will do 11.9 in the quarter. The Z06 is a better car to go againt this bad boy.

yea 11.9 @120 and 120 being the key point, from a roll that will beat a c6 unless its on spray or supercharged or has a heads and cams package at the very least...the 11.9 indicates it has pretty good gearing as well which gives it another advantage...

Crap, I thought I read 500 hp with 4500 pounds. That does not equate to 120 trap speed. You need around 660 flywheel hp to get a 4500 pound car (plus 200 pound driver) to turn 120 in the quarter.

My bad, I guess the Merc is going to win even against a C6 with headers.

well felt it touched it this evening. In a word I would be TOAST. This SL is VERY fast. VERY smooth. First gear is deep. My vette has to shift way before his MB. That torque he has allows a long initial pull. Guys it aint much of a race its a slaughter--sorry for the bad news. Compared to the MB, the vette is rude and crude but I love it. Its fast enough to put a big smile on my face thats for sure.

So are you saying you got SPANKED while racing on the private airstrip ...or did you just ride along in his car and got mentally SPANKED .

Don't worry I had a E55 AMG completely embarrass me when I had my C5 :o .

And compared to the MB it's also an entire brand new Z06 plus a Trailblazer SS with almost enough leftover for a Solstic GXP for weekdays cheaper as well.

And for the record, I am quite sure that if I were to do those same headers, cold air intake and tuning on my A6 I would be quicker than that 11.9@120 depending on the air quality so don't rule out the Corvette just yet.
I'll still stand by my original statement that he might win yes, but he won't destroy.

Not so fast. I know that 590 ft/lb of torque has you psyched out, but here are the specs per motor trend. First, your car, an A6:

$44,490/$56,570
Drivetrain Front engine, RWD,
Engine 6.0L/400-hp/ 400 lb-ft OHV V-8
Transmission 6-speed automatic
Curb weight (dist f/r) 3284 lb (51/49 %)
Length x width x height 174.6 x 72.6 x 49.0 in
0-60 mph 4.6 sec
Quarter Mile 13.0 sec @ 112.2 mph
Epa City/Hwy Fuel Econ 17 / 27 mpg

The Benz:

2004 Mercedes-Benz SL600
Base price $125,000 (est)
Vehicle layout Front engine, rwd, 2-door, 2-pass
Engine 5.5L/500-hp twin-turbocharged V-12, DOHC, 3 valves/cyl
0-60 mph, sec 4.5
On sale in U.S. Fall 2003

R&T shows the SL65 at 4.0 0-60 and 12.0 in the 1/4 against 4.5 and 12.8 for the Z51 M6, so that is clearly faster but that's with an extra 100HP over the 600.

The CL600 is 0.5 sec off the SL in the 0-60 and 1/4, which explains my ability to stomp it.

Conclusion: They're close enough on paper that I'd run this guy. Also remember that cars always feel faster from the passenger seat and that monster torque thru a slushbox feels good, but doesn't necessarily mean speed.

Look at it this way: even if you lose, it won't be by that much, and he paid nearly 3x what you paid, not to mention the repair bills he's going to have.

SoCal here too, and I'll happily run him. 400RWHP, 4.10s, and nice gummy tires right here, plus it looks totally stock. He won't know what hit him. I took out a Z06 last week, so I know I can bag that Benz thing.

DSOM, I'd love a ride in your car some time.

sorry, I still dont own a vette yet, but i'm planning to in a few months so this might be a noobie question, but what IS the best way to launch an auto? I'm debating between auto/man but I've never owned a man before and I wonder how long i'd take to get the hang of it. I figured for the auto, all u gotta do is punch it to get the best launch? or am i wrong?

man.. its a TT v12~! this is like comparing the ultimate sl vs the entry corvette... I would go find a buddy with a z06 and have him take your place.. that or get the APS TT kit and then race him. All he has to do is crank the boost up on that car and hes going to pull bus lengths on you. Any type of decent tuning, and that benz will be practically unbeatable.. imagine, V12 TT on meth injection.. probably would hit almost 700rwhp with basically everything else stock. I hear its a very conservative tune on that car... VERY!

Sorry, you are waaaaay wrong. This is not the place to hijack the thread but do a search and I'm sure you'll come up with numerous discussions about launching an automatic. Ranger has endless excellent tutorials on how to launch a MN6.

the power/wt ratio for hp and tq are about the same compared to my car. But we dont drive dynos or auto reviews so I'll take a spanking if needed.

Just talked to Sean at Orange County Corvettes and he mentioned they just baselined a SL600: 411RWHP. My car baselined 355 bone stock on that dyno. So there is not that much power there for the weight.

That said, there seem to be some really fast ones out there. If the car is like the one in bdking's timeslip, you are gonna be Bantha Fodder.
