looked in Road and Track (new May issue) summary and saw
sl600 500 hp 12.8 qtr
z51 vette 400 hp 12.8 qtr
why is this not a drivers race?
This was my point about having driven the SL55, very heavy, and I wasn't impressed. Approximately the same performance. Driver's race, practice those launches.
I've driven a friends AMG55.
It feels like there's a kid in the back seat pushing with his feet into the back of the drivers seat.
Easily THE fastest car I've ever driven.
Stick with the launch. He's got more HP and the added weight will not be as much of an issue at higher speeds. If you've been practicing those launches for maximum speed and minimal wheel spin, you'll have your best chance. Don't forget to practice those launches with the reduced rear tire pressure. 25lbs. Find the optimum rpm to hammer it from.
Also run a lower fuel level (roughly 1/3 to a 1/4 of a tank) and try to avoid having a passenger on board as well if ya can.
I have an SL55 and a C6, and the C6 is modded with a cam, 4.10 gears,
headers, etc, it did 410 RWHP. The straight line numbers for the SL600 are very similar to the SL55, at least up to 100 mph, except for the one test mentioned, and there is a M-B forum where they say that car was modded. When my wife and I were in both (SL55 and the Vette) cars (maybe I was the problem, I was in the Vette), and I would give her the signal to go, just to compare the cars. Only probably went from 35 to 85 mph a few times, but I was surprised that I couldn't get much on the SL. I'm sure the automatic in the SL vs. my skill with a 6 speed was an issue. I think with a stock C-6 it would be a drivers race as has been said. I've driven the SL600; the Vette is a much better handling and balanced car as the V12 weight overwhelms the front end. The SL55 handling is surprisingly good. Anyone that can't break the wheels loose in the SL55 doesn't know where the ESP switch is. They are all great cars, extremely close in acceleration in stock form. The SL600 is easily modified with a chip- you can add almost 80 HP pretty easily. It is hard to see how the SL is worth three Vettes, even though it is probably the best all around car I have ever owned.
If you think either a 600 or a '55 traps at 109, you are in for a fairly significant surprise.
Actually I have never driven one just reporting what Road and Track wrote in their summary page and it trapped 109.9 on their 10/06 road test. 112.5 for the vette on 1/07. Road and Track always seems a little slower than other mags but you would think it should be representative in these comparisons.
just for the heck of it I pulled out the Motor Trend test on August 06 on the s600:
0 to 60 4.7
qtr 13.2 108.5
My buddy has the SL65 it is a 4500+ lb monster with 700 ft lbs of torgue and 600 Hp. Of course it cost a little over 200K.
We raced several times and I always watch his tail lights.
Even if you beat the guy, which I would have my doubts for the aforementioned reasons. The guy is just a chip away from crushing numbers.
A chipped SL600, is enough to be right with a SL65. Check out MBworld.com
I have not seen many C6's run, but I have seen stock ones usually in the high 12's @109-111. And stock C5 Z06's in the mid 12's @114ish.
Though last time I was there, there was a 05 C6 M6, with full exhaust, intake, cam and tune. He was running well into the 11's @ 120+
It would take some serious mods to out run a modded SL600. But who cares its a tank....I have driven an SL55 and it doesn't even come close to the thrill of driving base C6.
