Three months ago when I wanted to start modding my car, I went to GM and told them my car sounded funning. Sounds like a knock, they told me thats what the LS2 sounds like. Okay...
Then after all my mods headers, exhaust, cold air, I went to the shop that I deal with to get it tuned. The tech that tuned it told me it sounded like there was a knock at high RPM. He said it was just bad gas. I still dynoed in the low range 370 RWHP. Okay....
I go to do my cam and heads today. What do I find? The timing chain bolts that go into the cam are loose. I think the only thing that was saving me was that the bolts couldn't go any further due to the timing cover. The chain was so loose my timing could have been off by 15%.
Has anyone seen this before?
The only thing good that might come out of this is if in fact I was loosing HP, The end number will only look better!!!
Nope never saw it happen before, you are lucky you didn't get stranded.
Use a stock timing chain. The stocker is the same one used on the Z06 so it will handle well more than 500 HP. It you go aftermarket you are wasting money.
....and one more thing...use loctite on the cam bolts
I've seen pictures where the cam bolts backed out so far that they started to rub again the cover. All was well for a while until things came apart. Lots of $ to fix the mess.
That is very interesting, I have done several cam and head packages on C6s in my shop and have yet to see any cam bolts that has been loose. I always loctite the new bolts in place when I do a cam change just as added insurance.
