I put mine at about 36psi, and hot there at 38. I feel the car is more reponsive and agile.
36 psi cold...
I'd humbly suggest you run the tire pressure as recommended on the placard on your door sill. IMO 36 psi is way too high. Unless you drive very conservatively I'd be surprised if you didn't get a warning as your tires heat-up.
I run my rear tires at 30 lbs and my front tires at 31 to help balance the C6's slight weight distribution differential (51/49).
If you have added different valve stem caps check to be sure if they have an "O" ring in them. I found that existed in my last car and when I screwed it down the ring got stuck in the neck of the stem and would not allow air to go in the the tire, had to dig it out with a tooth pick
You were 100% correct. The O-ring on my Corvette logo cap got stuck in the neck. Dealer fished it out and then accidentally dropped the cap down the drain.
this may be a dumb question, but its never been clarified for me. the sticker on the door jam says 30 psi cold but what does it mean when it says "hot" add 4 psi." does that mean the pressure will rise up to 4psi when the tire is hot or add an additional 4 psi.
I trust it means that if oyu measure your tires pressure while they are hot and it reads 30psi you really need to add 4psi to have a cold 30psi.
At 36 psi, you are running 20% over the recommended pressure. It feels more responsive because the tread is bulging in the center, effectively turning your front 245's into 225's or so. This is causing the very center band of the tires to bear the stress of the entire car. The steering will feel quicker, but you are paying for it with higher temperatures concentrated on the center band of the tread which under enough stress can cause delamination at worst, and much faster tire wear at the least. Your lateral grip and breaking performance will also be diminished.
Stick to what the manufacturer recommends. 30psi.
The manufacturers recommendation is a compromise between handling/braking and ride comfort. In other words, 30 PSI is a happy median between ride comfort (lower pressure gives better ride) and performance (higher pressure gives better lateral grip and braking). Higher pressure means less sidewall flex, less sidewall flex means less friction/heat build up in the tire. Lower tire temps give longer tire life and less sidewall flex gives better MPG. Autocrossers have been using higher pressures for years to give a stiffer sidewall to prevent the sidewall from "rolling over"...tires don't corner too well on the sidewall. The excessive wear in the center isn't significant (in my experience, it's been 1/32"-2/32") and is more than offset with longer tire life and better MPG. The tread just doesn't deflect that much due to the structural strength of the belts/cords/molding which translates to minimal "bulging" to use your term. Besides, if I was worried about the cost of tires, I wouldn't own 3 Corvettes.
Tire pressure is a lot like oil, you'll find a lot of opinions that are more personal preferences meaning there isn't just one brand/weight of oil that everybody should be using just like there isn't any one tire pressure everybody should use. The manufacturers recommendation is just that...a recommendation for you to start from and adjust to your preferences. For me, I run the pressure as high as it'll go without setting off the high pressure warning (in my daughters' '99 coupe) and have gone as high as 50 psi in my other cars depending on what the tire sidewall says is the maximum for that particular tire. Remember the maximum rated load of the tire is only valid at the maximum pressure which is why the owners manual says to increase pressure for heavy loads. Yes, I get a rough ride but that is my preference and I've never had a problem. Do I recommend it to others??? Only if they want to, it's a matter of preference.

It seems like alot of you guys think im nuts but the tires I have arent stock, there BFG's KDW2's, if that makes me seem any less nuts. I might just take your guys advise and lower the psi.
