Default MGW: Shifter or Flagpole?

I decided to get a new shifter after driving another forum members car. Craigster05 has always purchased the best parts on his car and makes his decisions in an informed, scientific way. His maturity shows through in that he goes with what works and not nec the current buzz word in car parts. I was impressed with his shifter and it was tight and clicked into place perfectly. It made me want to drive more.

He stated that there is a new shifter that he heard was an extension on the positives and he based his information on other statements from those who have bought the shifter for their car and had switched rfrom another shifter. All to often lately we see that many people like to hear themselves talk and jump in on threads to comment on a part they dont have rather than the part they do have. This of course is to bash what they dont have nor do they have a first hand knowledge of a car with the part too. They just like to post a lot. I'm sure the type will jump in here to say, "my super x model shifter is recomended by tuner xyz and therefore its the best!!!".

Before I get bashed here, I LIKE THE SHIFTER....but it needs help in one area. I think the issue is that the shifter was first created to use an aftermarket shifter **** at a height that is relatively normal. After bickering about the love of the sexy stock ****, George (MGW) made an alternate bolt on top section that fits the stock **** fro those forum members that wanted it. Within the limitation of the established base, the use of the stock **** results in one really huge gorilla-size "organ" sticking up fromt he center console. I was smiling on the way home tonight after putting it in for two reasons, there were a bunch of people there when I put it in and it was sort of Phallic looking. It appears to be 2-3 inches too tall. The other reason for the smile was that this thing clicks into each gear so perfectly that I didnt want to go home even though I was dead tired.

The shifter is great but I think I need the other top section to get a shorter overall appearance so I can see past it at the heater and readio controls, and on-comming traffic and the rear view mirror and the pole holding it to the glass and the antenna at the top of the window. George, how much is the other top section?

Chuck from corvettes of westchester took my old T-handle that I was temporarily removing to epoxy paint it. It is a mandatory piece so I can activate my nitrous system and spin the tires even more. he welded a bolt with the same thread so it would fit into this shifter base and I can have my old favorite part back on my car. I like when people say, Oh its an automatic?" The T-handle is a bit old school but it works for me with the N2O and I dont like letting go to hit a button and get my hand back to the shifter in time. I also like to pretend I'm shooting other cars with missles by pushing the shifter button from my fighter jet while driving around not using the nitrous, but thats a secret.

Did I tell you I upgraded the N2O also? Another thread soon....with a smaller dual nozzle shot to come.

You guys did a great job fabricating the handle.....I wish I had a camera to take a pic of your mad scientist face as you were cutting the bolt with the grinder..between the sparks and your smile, you looked like Dr Frankenstein for sure! Was that a happy smile, or awful pain from that damned pinched nerve in your neck??

The shifter's throw and feel is awesome for sure, it is easily worth another $100 more than MGW is selling it for.....to me, MUCH better than the B&M, the Callaway, Hurst, just about every shifter I can think of that Ive actually had my hands on...Ive never felt such a short and more aptly "perfect" 2-3 gating in a Corvette...felt like the shifter in my friend's Lambo Diablo ...Cheers George...thanks for a great product without a huge Corvette tax, let's hope you are starting a trend!

Pipedream's modified Hurst ball decreases the shifter hieght significantly. When we have a moment, maybe we will take a few pics tomorrow with the stock ****, and Ed's **** to show the actual installed heights.

Craig,

I'd likes to see those pics along with any comments as to wether the Pipedreams Hurst ball has any adverse affects on the MGW shifter due to it's increased weight.

Spin, I did not elect to get the shaft that accepts the stock **** due to the fact that I wanted something different....But anyway, when I tested the pre-production shifter for George, my only recommendation to him about his awesome shifter was that I felt that the overall height of the shifter should be reduced by about 0.5-1", cause I figured it will be an issue with some guys out there. Some guys, including myself like the look and feel of a SHORT, short-shifter.....What he expressed to me was that with reduced shifter height, you will get INCREASED shift effort, which could be an even greater issue among certain people out there...Makes sense.

I'm on the fence on shifter height also...I've already cut my stock one 1" and it works pretty good for me with a variety of (non-stock) *****. If you guys get some pics up it will help me decide! Too many great reports on this shifter to ignore it. Sounds like it will improve my already great shifting '08...

There is no need to ignore it. Get the version that allows an aftermarket **** and select one according to shift effort and style in accordance with your individuality. The stock **** version sits too high and was the subject of 3 hours of jokes last night. It isnt just me.

I just received the OEM stock **** shifter from MGW. I am not quite sure I follow what you all are suggesting. 1) Is this OEM version taller than MGW's other version? why? 2)Is the MGW taller than the OEM shifter that came with the car?
Thanks....

Did you cut it at the top threads or did you cut it in the middle and re-wield?

There are no threads on a stock shfter......**** is held on with a Torx (or phillips in an '08) screw..
If you're going to use a universal ****, cutting the stick will essentially lower it and shorten the throw..

The shaft that attaches to the shifter top mount is threaded and can be unscrewed. A threaded stud can be attached to any shifter **** eliminating up to 2" in height. While I agree shifter effort would increase somewhat, drivability would fall into the subjective category alongside cam manners/streetability. For me, I can handle a bit more to get the flagpole a bit shorter. I dont know why I even cared about having the stock version. If anything I would want the use of a different **** but my T-handle is what I need and can use it. I will want to buy the other version or make a stud that has the threads to mount to the shufter on one side and any screw on after market **** on the other.

I have used Kirban, callaway, B&M, modified stockers, and this shifter and by far, this thing is the best one available even if it looks like King Kong's "unit".

Yeah man! We can have a post your funniest caption thingy.

Pics will be posted. I was looking for an excuse to go get the car out.

You way missed the point of the post if you think its a reason to not get the shifter....just get the version that uses an aftermarket ****. Function before form but the aftermarket **** isnt a trade-off. The shifter is the best thing since sliced bread.

If I had your shifter I wouldnt swap but it was your car and Craig's that made me jump. If you are wanting to use the stock **** I wouldnt want it this high. The shifter mod that Chuck did to my T-handle makes the MGW work better with my situation. He welded on a bolt that has the same threads as the upper handle mount of the MGW so it is if it was designed for this application. The handle moves about 1/2 an inch to the right and left to give you an idea of how short a throw. They are both tight but this one is really a short throw. Its 35%. The short throw requires more effort over the shorter distance so you best be taking vitamins to have a short **** height like mine is.
