Default FAST or Cam, which first?

So, I have saved up a little cash and am getting very close to buying my next mod. My next 2 mods I am wanting to do is the FAST 90 or 92, (SPINmodded of course ) or a cam. I have been looking into the LG g6 cam. I realize the LG g6 is a big cam, but, thats what I want. This is my DD, but I only drive 10-20 miles a week and put all my miles during the weekend driving to/from my house to the parents house (Which is about a 250 mile round trip that I do about once a month).

My question: What mod should I do first? Does it matter? I plan on doing both in the future, but I can only do one. I am about 200 short on the cam with install/tuning, and I could get the FAST today.

My mods are in my profile/sig. I have pretty much all bolt ons. I am hoping for 425rwhp with the LG G6, and I figure about 20hp gain with the FAST which would put me around 400.

I am just having a hard time on deciding which to do first!!! What do you guys think?

I did the FAST first, it was just a timing issue. Found a great deal on a FAST and went for it. I certainly think you'll make 400rwhp with the FAST. I made 410rwhp/407rwtq SAE (dynojet) with a Vararam, FAST, 1.85 rockers, 1 3/4" long-tubes, x-pipe with cats, cat-back and tune. My cam is going in next week. A comp cams .230/.236 .612/.608 113 lsa on XFI lobes. Hopefully 440-450rwhp for me.

I was in this same proverbial boat... Kind of. My decision was made for me however, in the event that a friend had a FAST he was selling so I went that rout first.

Some things I've noticed with the FAST:
1) Much improved performace w/ an AitQik ported and SpinMonster modded FAST!
2) Dyno results showed improved HQ/TQ throughout the power band.
3) Peak increase (without a full tune) was 20 - 30 HP/TQ, though I expect more HP once we've completed a full tune.

Some things to think about for install. In both cases, the Manifold (and everything above it) need to be removed for install. As such, that's work that you'll have to do twice if you space out the installs as I have. That being said, It only took about 2 hours for disassembly/reassembly, so it may not be a factor in your decision making.

If you're interested in a cam swap, my recommendation would be to PM Spin and ask for his guidance. He's done enough of these H/C jobs without failure to label him an, if not THE, expert.

I think you will get very close to that 450!

I only made 375 SAE on a dynojet with my mods. I would think with the FAST and retune I would hopefully get close to 400.

With the Cam I would expect 420-425 and about 440 with the FAST and Cam.

I just can't decide which to do first!

Good info Apex!

Yeah, if I do the FAST it would def be a SPINmodded one as I said in the OP. I know that I will like the SPINFAST, for sure. I am just puzzled on which to do first. If I do the FAST, I would do the install myself and save a little money, and then have some money left over to start saving for a cam change. If I do the Cam exchange first, I will be out of spending cash and have to save again for the FAST. I will in any event, end up doing both, but prob not do the 2nd one for at least a couple of months. The thing with the cam is that I need to pay for install and that is not cheap. I have no intention of trying the cam install myself...

Sounds like the cam would provide better gains, though it might be worth while to wait and do a head/cam job at the same time. That might cost a few hundred extra, but will likely be well worth it.

I guess it all comes down to how much free $ you have lying around waiting to get poured into your car for HP/TQ.

Yeah, I'm not sure the cost benefit.

For the Manifold it would be about 1100 for a new one that is ported/modded to fit the LS2.
FAST = 1100-1150 (Installed myself) about 20hp/tq or so? (+ more for tuning, 400? maybe more HP/TQ?)

Cam would be about 2400 for the Cam with install/dyno tuning.
CAM = 2400 (Pro. installed/tuned) about 35-40hp/tq or so?

Default Correction

The manifold does not have to come off w/ a cam swap, the lifters are held in place internally on LS2. Some of the stuff will have to come off, but only that blocks access to the front of the motor (ie air intake, throttle body, etc.)

I would still do it all it once, not to provide finanacial advice here, but if you do them seperately you'll need to tune the car twice & if done professionally w/ a dyno that's gonna run $400 twice. Putting on a low interest CC makes sense than 2 tunes & there will definately be redundant labor. Or if you're totally fiscally responsible wait 'til you have enough to do it all. Lol

My thoughts,

HP/$ you are going to get more from the cam install than the intake.

At the same time, I did a FAST on my car first just to see what it would do with all of the bolt on's. I'm still not done and have done a pretty darn good job of increasing HP and TQ both, and I have NOT touched the rocker arms, camshaft, or added an underdrive pulley.

  • LG Pro's
  • Borla Z06 Touring Exhaust
  • CAI
  • FAST 90mm intake (un-ported)

Typically speaking an un-ported FAST will net you about 10rwhp and 18rwtq. The nice thing about it, is that it will pick up that torque from 2600-5600

Same point and time..
  • LG Pro's
  • Stainless Works 3" cat back
  • CAI
  • G5X1 cam kit (small cam)

As you can see there is more to get from a cam install, and even more to be had with both. Of course you can always go larger on the cam as well.

Let me know how I can help!

You can always look for deals. I found my FAST for $700, including everything and shipping. It was brand new as well. I just happened upon it and took it. Just got slightly used Harland Sharp 1.7 rockers for $125...about $400 brand new.

My FAST was worth +15rwhp/+21rwtq SAE over my ported stock intake. My ported stock was worth +4rwhp/+6rwtq SAE at the peaks but about +10/10 in the middle. The FAST was worth the +15/20 over that in the middle. So the gains, IMO, are certainly worth it with the FAST.

Yeah, would have to do the dyno-tune twice, like I'm doing. My cam, parts and labor, is coming out to about $2000. I bought a used ASP u/d pulley for $125 as well.

Anthony,

Good information! I just recently was at LG for the first time this past saturday having Louis work his magic with my timing/knocking problems that I was having.

I just messaged Louis about any kind of deal I could do with the FAST and Cam at the same time. I'm not sure if ya'll remove the manifold when you do your Cam install or not. If it wouldn't be that much extra, I might wait to do the cam until I have enough to get the FAST and bring it in when I do the Cam. I am looking into the G6x3, I am hoping that is aggresive enough, lol.

What kind of gains would you expect me to see with the g6? 40hp increase?

If you get a chance, PM me about what kind of options I could do with ya'll. I can't wait to get back up to the shop... I enjoyed every moment of being there... even if it was 104 degrees!

Bunk, I think 450 HP would be a faitly easy targer for you. You got good bolton base numbers to start with. The only thing that comes into my mind is the fact that you have the 1.85 rockers and you are anticipating on going th a cam with 612 lift Im sure you thaught of this
and it may be a problem. Maybe you are putting the stock 1.7's back
on when you make the cam swap. The porting of your fast will be that much better with your new cam. I do wish you the best of luck with it.

I would do the FAST and get it PORTED and with a good tuner you can reach that 400 mark. you will notice a real nice gain in SOTP, and
ultimately good dyno numbers. Then you can think about the 40-50 hp a good cam and retune will give you. I know I was going to install a UD pulley with the fast for an extra 5-10 hp but my tuner and many others said it was illogical and just wait until I am ready for a cam. I agreed
We put the ported fast on and easily made 400+ HP/TQ. One more thing I forgot to mention is the value in getting the THROTTLE BODY PORTED. Its not expensive and will give you better throttle response
and a little more hp/tq.
Good luck with your choice. Leon

Yes AND I am going to fullfil that promise... just trying to decide if I should wait and do it later, do them together, or do it first. But, in any situation... I will be going to LG.

Haha, that is true... although. I think my car might be too loud... Cam through headers w/ no cats, and B&B Bullets... I might want to look at, at least adding cats or something... lol.

That's exactly why I went back to stock mufflers and cutouts!!

I bet LG can hook you up with Zo6 NPP mufflers and a Mild to Wild kit.

Matter of fact...I wonder if they've got a set of mid pipes laying round with cutouts on them, I think my buddy sent them back a set a few months back.
