You want to unplug the steering sensor completely so that the SAH message is for that reason. If the SAH is for a different reason like wheel speed sensor then you’re right, if the steering wheel sensor fails then the car will still try to kill you.

Ideally someone needs to engineer a active handling defeat module that feeds the bcm/ecu fake sensor data. Maybe so that the car always thinks the steering wheel is dead centre and it replicates the wheel speed sensor of one wheel to all wheels. So at very least when you break traction the TC will intervene a little

Well it certainly was true in my case (see video) so it looks like we are screwed in both scenarios.

Val, I was searching CF on an issue I acquired on my 09 C-6 wherein at high speed I let off and tried again and it started to run like I had only 6 cylinders working, the AH/TC lights were lit up on the dash. It didn't pull or do anything that made me nervous other than it doesn't run right. All plugs wire have been checked and attached.
I don't think I have what you discovered on the 05-08 but still waiting for CF guys to make a comment on my concern.
P.S.
Kudos for taking this issue on and spreading the word.

Has anyone with a ZR1 had this? I just found my SWPS and bearing out of position on the column. No codes or weird behavior. It seems my SWPS connector doesn't move around, theres some slack, then its taped to the plastic ring that keeps it all together.
This thread has me seriously considering selling it and moving on. I've had this car up to 186 mph, with the intention of hopefully one day getting it to 200 on a runway or something. I also want to tackle twisty roads. Any sort of weird behavior at that speed is death.

I'm straight up terrified to drive this car now.

I have a 2010 so without the SWPS connected I'm pretty sure PTM is useless, not that it has ever seemed to work anyway.

Don't sell the car. I'll have it fixed in an hour if you fly me up, lol. Messaged you back on potential fixes.

All: If you see your active handling sensor loose at the bottom of the steering column, PM me. I've had multiple people reach out to me directly and I can try to walk you through the potential fixes via PM. Lets come up with a few guys per state who have had the issue/was able to fix it so we can help each other out to fix it. This has been the only real issue I've had with this car but its a extremely dangerous issue.

GM: Please step the f*** up and fix it before more people get hurt, or someone dies.

Cyber. Give me a PM if you havent already figured it out.
If you can see the bottom of the column and you see a hanging sensor, the dealer is wrong. Its not the sensor, its the damn steering column.

This issue is more of a misfire issue. I believe if the C6 starts misfiring, the AH/TC lights up. A lot of people have had issues with a disconnected spark plug wire that would result in a misfire->AH/TC light. Was it running well until you came off throttle? Auto? Manual?

How do we know, nobody's been killed? What about fatal crashes that were blamed on reckless or inattentive driving, falling asleep at the wheel, etc. that may actually have been caused by this issue.

So I had this happen on my 2005 Base on slow speeds, so I was really scared to take it on the freeway, I took it to my GM dealership for them to check on it, asides from the "extras" they thought would be nice for me to spend on including a Rear Axle Service which I had already done 3 weeks ago... they said the main culprits were the Front Left Suspension Control Position Sensor (GM89047642) and Suspension Control Module (GM15808061), they did not have the SCM in stock so they told me to go and buy it, in the meantime they'll keep the car, cool, but it's been a PITA finding one, I'll update if this really fixes the issue.

Sent you a PM, apologies for my tardiness on this thread. I parked the car and haven't had time to mess with it.

Finally tonight I took out the panels to look underneath, lo and behold, the sensor is basically spinning free further down the shaft from where it appears it should be, and even further down the shaft is a plastic cap of some sort that definitely has come loose from further up the shaft. Presumably the sensor is supposed to be further seated up the shaft and that plastic cap holds it in place from sliding down the shaft?

I can envision with a telescoping wheel/column, that plastic cap gets raked off, probably with the sensor, especially if it has been sitting unused for a while. I took some photos and a video of what I'm seeing, happy to share if it helps diagnose.

I guess I need to get that sensor back up where it belongs, but then I think I'm left with the dilemma of whether it's aligned properly according to the computer and I have no idea what to do about that.

Thanks again for the offer further up the thread, would love to get this fixed before good weather, certainly want to be safe and would love to tell the dealer to take their quote and stick it.

I had my column replaced before it had a chance to act up.

My question is, do I leave my column in one place? Or do I periodically move it back and forth to keep it from binding?

I move mine frequently but I drive with it fully extended. When I have it full extended, I "jog" the control back just a bit to give it slack, then wiggle the steering wheel. You can feel the wheel get loose when you do.

You can also disconnect the telescoping motor if you dont want to ever use it again lol

Has anyone found a replacement part for the plastic retaining clip/housing that goes around the SAS on the shaft? Mine has all but 1 clip broken--seems ridiculous that this 2 dollar piece of plastic wouldn't be available somewhere as a serviceable part.

If you're talking about the clip it's: GM Clip Part No. 19179794 it's available on Amazon, eBay, etc. for less than $10 and directly from Chevy dealerships ($15)

I clipped mine more than a couple of times, wrapped them more than a couple of times, did all they said to to do.

But the only thing that actually seemed to work was to let the telescoping steering wheel ( and the moving seat) quit working.

Fortunately, the seat and the steering wheel stopped in a good place.

I used to scoff at those who posted this, but have since changed my tune.

I only have 260,000 miles, so maybe it will be different in the future.

Are you sure about that part number? I can find only:

GM Genuine Parts Steering Angle Sensor Retainer

GM Part # 26070027
ACDelco Part # 26070027

Will this work? Or am looking at apples vs oranges?
