That was scary to say the least. I'm pushing the dealer to repair as much as I can since its still under the 5k/3mo warranty that they provide on purchases. Unfortunately I'm JUST off the GM warranty so thats no use.

I took the TSB for the clip along with this posting to the Tech who said that the majority of the codes that came back (The light came on JUST as I entered the dealer) were "steering wheel" related errors. He agreed that ordering the sensor along with the clip was a good place to start. He also said that he would do some digging with GM and see what else he could find out about this issue after he read the post.

I have to say that I LOVE my car. I drove an 04 Lambo just prior to buying my 06 Vette and was hugely disappointed by the ride (like a go cart), and the fact that the V10 sounded like an Indy car (ya...I know its a personal opinion thing) The exhaust, even factory, on my V8 sounded so much more aggressive....... BUT. I am upset by the fact that I had been under the impression that Vettes were better engineered and better quality than I am seeing presently. I would expect this type of thing from a Z24 (and have experienced it first hand) but would think that GM would do a little better QC on their flagship supercar. I also am somewhat put-out by the fact that GM doesnt offer a "perk" warranty on Vettes... It would certainly be nice to see some type of special coverage offered to cover issues like this "Service Active Handling" problem. These types of issues in my mind should be covered under a 10yr+ manufacturers defect warranty (faulty engineering?)

Well I've said enough. I'll reply on how goes the repairs/fix.

CALL ERNEST AT GM!!! (866) 790-5600 x 12969. Also suggest you contact the NHSTB (on page 1 of this post) and report your uncommanded rt or lft turn when the brake applied itself. I did and they contacted me the NEXT DAY and asked what happened. If not, do the fix yourself so you know it is done right. Good luck

bterwillinger, can you provide me with the part number from the "yaw sensor"? I have the same problem and have been to two pretty good dealers over the past few years and problem continues to return. In 2007 they replaced the "Steering Wheel Position Sensor" and the problem went away for a while. However, it is back and happening more often with each passing day. I would like to ask the dealer to replace the "yaw sensor" this time, but I would like to know what the part number is just in case. thanks...Tim

I am considering buying 2009 C6, but probably won't do it, primarily because of having the front brakes lock up by themselves. Should I see that there are thousand of C6 and only a few of them are having this problem? Are any of you that already have a C6 going to sell their cars because of this problem?

Or is this problem fixed on the 2009 cars?

Thanks,

Enzo

Tim,
From another post. I'm not sure they were accurate in what they replaced. Check with your dealers using this number. FWIW, still no issues and it has been 2+ months.

Still no issues. Got the receipt and here is what it says:

"Replaced Vehicles Yaw Sensor"
FP Number: 15231656
Description: Sensor 6.522

Looking it up the best I can, it seems to be a steering wheel position sensor, not a yaw sensor. Whatever it was, it seems to have fixed the issue.

OK I have read all the responses in this thread (well most off them, some are way over my head). And I believe my problem is a little different. My car never displays the SAH message when driving or turning but the minute I press the Traction Control button the SAH shows up in the DIC. Any time I want the SAH message to show up all I have to do is turn off traction control and this happens driving or sitting still. I am running 20/20 combo will this make that happen. Oh and I looked on and I have the orange plastic comb fix installed.

I've had the SAH issue for 2.5 years now on my '05 (25k miles). The light will come on when backing out of the garrage, making slow tight turns in a parking lot, exactly as described in numerous posts here. I have never experience brake lock-ups at high speeds or anything as dangerous as has also been described. I have taken it to several dealers in several states (I'm in the military) and all have tap-danced around fixing anything. One dealer told me the AH was working properly if the light came on, then reset following engine shut down. One said I had to change my driving habbits (car has never been tracked or seriously raced). Another said he couldn't duplicate the problem and no codes were thrown, therefore nothing to worry about. I even printed the service bulltin for two different dealers. Now, yesterday after a routine oil change, the fourth dealer the car has been to (I had seen the light for a week straight, then not at all for two weeks with no change in driving habits) told me he wanted to replace the steering wheel position sensor and connector clip for $845.

Do I have any case for making a dealer fix this with my documented history (I have several invoices detailing the problem) despite being past the 3-year factory warranty? Should I take this to complaint to GM in light of the safety concerns?

Am I better off trying to have someone else replace the sensor?

I asked if the problem is still present on a 2009 Corvette, which see now, has been asked before and no one has come forward and said they have had the problem.

What I do know is that the Steering Wheel Sensor has been changed. PN 15231656 is used on a 2005-2008 Corvette and is not used on a 2009, so there has been a design change, hopefully for the better. Also the service bulletin Document ID: 2032653 is only needed on a 2005-2008 Corvette. I asked the service writer and he said that the effectively dates on the service bulletin would be updated if needed.

If anyone does have a problem with a 2009, let us know. I may look at getting a 2009 Vette yet.

I just finished reading every post in this thread and now have a question trying to determine the root cause of the failures.

I see that most are in 3LT cars with telescoping steering, but still some have issues in 1LT and 2LT cars too.

So has everyone who has had this problem individuals who, either by electronics or by manual means, move (relocate) the steering wheel upon entry and exit from the car?

The reason for this question should be clear because of the dealer "fix" required and that the "fix" is not permanent.

I have 51K on my DD 2LT '08 and have only adjusted the wheel a couple of times, therefore putting no significant strain or movement on either the cable or the connector. I've never had the DIC message when it wasn't warranted.

I have the memory seat/steering on my '08 STS and have alerted my wife of the potential problem, as she uses that feature to near full capacity. I would suspect GM uses the same system on the Caddy as the Vettes.

I have an 05 Z51 and mine just went off, GM replaced it the next day however I am under a 1 year certified warranty. The alert came on 100 miles into a 1200 mile trip and the alert came on and off numerous times during that trip. At no time though did I experience any erratic behavior on the part of the car, only the Ohio Trooper that persued me probably doesn't agree.

My dealer has agreed to fix this problem, but I have to wait for the problem to occure before they can do any warranty work.
That makes sence on paper, other than the safety concern...I hope I don't loose control of my car the first time.

So there is no TSB or acknowledged defect from GM?

My SAH light comes on randomly from time to time, though I have suffered no adverse affects, and the problem normally goes away once the vehicle is restarted.

I am out of warranty, and certainly will not fork-out $845 to have a sensor replaced to correct this issue.

I've had my 05 for 2 years and never a problem. Then last night without warning the brakes locked up and the car made a hard right turn which would have put me into the car next to me' drivers side quarter panel. Fortunately I'm a high speed pursuit and lethal intervention driving instructor otherwise at least 3 people would have been hurt. I was able to control the car and safely stop and saw "Active Handling" on the DIC. I tryed to start going again to get to the other curb and the Active Handling kept locking up the brakes. The car will be going in Mon and documentation will start. I'm not screwing around with this. It will be fixed or I will file suit upon the subsequent activation.

I've already contacted the Service Manager at the dealership as well as the Regional Rep for GM (as I said my father works there and we have dealt with these people for over 10 years and we've purchased 12 cars from them in that time). This is horrible. I'm afraid to drive the car.

Well, since I just purchased the final (brand new '08 C6 ZO6, 7.0L/M6) model the stealership had on the lot on 09/18/09. I haven't had this issue checked out w/ the Z, yet. As I'm still in the reseach mode so far. But, rest assured I will have it looked @ by the saleman. So far, they've bent over backward to take care of any issues Ive come up w/ so far.

Great info on the forum! Keep up the great work

Thanks again,
Don

We've just experienced our first SAH event...and the second the same day. 9600 mile '05 LT1 w/telescopic steering wheel.

Wife's car...I've driven it 8 times in 2 years. She came home this morning describing the event...said she heard a noise (sounded like pass side front), the SAH light and DIC alert came on and that it seemed like there was less than normal power (brake(s) on???). She didn't mention any steering issues at first but after reading this I asked her if the car pulled in one direction or another and then she said she thought it pulled to the right a little. She pulled over, shut off the engine, restarted and drove home.

She asked me to test drive it and it happened to me too...driving straight line 20mph slowing for a red light. I heard no noise, didn't feel any steering change, but think one or more brakes may have been applied as the car didn't roll like I thought it should. Shut off and restarted and drove home normally.

So today we've had our first two SAH events within less than 10 driving miles of each other.

Damn...afraid to let wife drive her car now!!

Had my meeting with everyone today as I dropped the car off. I was told that they would check every connector and module associated with the system and would be replacing the Steering Wheel Position module, the Yaw Sensor, as well as a Brake Position sensor and anything else they could find and give me a detailed invoice of the items and problem so that once my extended warranty expires it will still be covered. I was happy with this. They were very concerned and receptive.

Although I had no SES lights or messages on my DIC, the tech found 14 error codes stored saying that numerous systems were not communicating. Looks like the car will be gone for a while. I also specifically stated that I didn't want some bull**** clip.
