Default *low* oil pressure - help!

Gang,

I have an '08, M6 1LT. 10k miles, properly maintained.

On the way home from work today, my oil pressure was CRAP! At idle, it would hang around 10 psi. Then, while just granny-driving in first gear, it'd shoot up to about 60 psi by only 15 MPH in first gear!

I limped home in granny mode. At least in 6th gear at 60 mph the pressure stabilized at a reasonable 35 psi.

I checked the oil and it is full. No leaks, no weird noises, no obvious signs of anything wrong.

Obviously, I'll be taking the Vette to the dealer! What I'd like to ask is:

1) My dealer is about 10 miles away from here. Considering that pressure seems ok at granny-cruising speeds, I am presuming it should be safe to drive it to the dealer (assuming pressure doesn't drop out completely, in which case I immediately pull over)..

Does anyone disagree and think that I MUST flatbed the Vette to the dealer - i.e. I drive it at my own great risk?

2) What could be causing this? Seems like a blockage to me.... What else could be the problem? An oil pump failure seems out of the question since pressure also goes too high in addition to too low.

If it is a blockage, what could even be the material that's blocking!?!?!? I suppose the dreaded case would be massive amounts of metal filings clogging the filter!

3) Next: what, if any, questions should I demand my dealer answer when I take it in regarding this issue?

Any help is greatly, greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Ando

it could just be a bad sending unit.

I would have it flatbed to the dealer on any question of oil pressure. As to what would cause the low pressure, bad oil filter could do it. Has the oil been recently changed? Stuck oil pressure relief valve could too. From out here in cyber space, these too are the most likely cause in my opinion.

I assume that the sending unit is involved in transmitting the read oil pressure to the computer/guages, correct?

No problem I hope the dealer gets it figured out quick for you and gets you back on the road. It really sucks having one's Vett down!

Good input as to causes from above, and yes, I'd flatbed it to the dealer. Just btw, oil temp and engine temp staying as normal?

It's not unusual to see a very low oil pressure reading after running your car hard on a road course, however, a pressure reading of only 10 is what I'd consider critical (especially if there's no logical explanation). I'd play it safe and have it 'towed' to the dealer. Better safe than sorry.

if its under extended warranty, id call the dealer, and ask them,, have them get it towed to dealer, or drive it to dealer and replace the motor.

GM considers an oil pressure of as low as 6 psi normal.

Uh Oh!!!

I hope it's not like this Z06 owner's problem!!! This thread is in the Z06 section:

http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c6-z...in-06-z06.html

The OP just edited his original post and the first post in the thread now has what he found the problem to be.

Hint: Check for rags in your oil system!!!

Good luck!

Bob

Had same problem with my 07 Coupe w/25K miles last month. Because the oil temp remained steady, I drove it to the dealer. They replaced the oil pressure sensor switch (located on upper right side oil pan). Have to admit when it first happened I was on a 600 mile road trip and it scared the crap out of me. But dealer got right to it and fixed it.

That location is the oil level sensor, not the oil pressure...but it really doesn't matter as long as you had it fixed. Hope the rest of the trip went well.
