I did a search. Can anyone supply a link to a good write up with photos on a C6 clutch job? Fortunately, I have a lift and multiple jack stands to support everything...
Here's a link to the popular 'Ranger' method for purging/replacing clutch fluid. This is not the same as bleeding the clutch but I feel it's a worthwhile maintenance procedure to follow. It's easy and inexpensive to do and I believe clean, fresh fluid is always preferable to older, dirtier fluid. Good luck!
I dont have a link to a write up but if you have any questions PM me. I just did one on my car (or well the slave cylider replacement which is basically the same deal).
And for gods sake buy a remote bleeder and install it while your in there. Ranger method is only so good.
As for a walk through, ill give you the basic steps.
1. Pull exhaust.
2. Pull tunnel plate (one with like 20 useless bolts freakin everywhere).
3. Remove rear wheels.
4. Disconnect calipers (zip tie to rear end or somewhere easy so you dont have to bleed the brakes).
5. Disconnect upper control arm, upper shock mount and misc attached to the rear end.
6. Loosen 4 bolts that hold the rear end in place.
6.5. (oops) Disconnect shifter and leave in gear.
6.75. Pull starter motor.
7. Disconnect bolts from bell housing then pull torque tube.
8. Gently lower it to get access to transmission plugs (not necessary to remove but need to completely pull the rear end.
9. Unbolt clutch and replace.
10. Reassemble.
Thats a VERY basic run down and I probably forgot a few things. I ended up loosening the front cradle as well to tilt the engine to get the torque tube out easier.
And its very important that you properly insert the input shaft. Its a pain in the *** and helps a lot to have someone very lightly spin the rear rotors to turn it slightly as it will take a few tries to get back in correctly. And lube it with graphite spray.
Lets see... the transmission cooler cables will pour all of your transmission fluid out if you set the torque tube on the floor and leave the back end raised... yeah that was a fun clean up. ha
Depending on the mileage of the car you may want to replace the slave while your at it... they tend to go out with bad clutch fluid and you will not want to do this again any time soon when your done.
When you do finish reassembly, leave the wheels off and car in the air and start it and test all the gears. If something doesn't work it saves you the trouble of having to rejack it up.
Things i messed up was hooking the starter motor back up correctly (after working from 8:30PM, at 7AM you really start to loose concentration ha). I left the ground off the top of the bell housing uggg. And the parking brake reconnect I couldn't figure out till i saw the pic from the link above.
its seems alot more scary then it is especially since you have a lift, air tools and sound like a handy guy. The main things you will struggle with are the bell housing bolts and make sure not to tilt the engine too much because like the sticker shows you can damage some things aligning the clutch plate and bleeding if you install a new slave cylinder. All of those things just do a search and read up alot and you will have no problem. I have done a C5 and start to finish it took around 6 hours but at that time i was a tech fulltime and totally into it. So my guess is a couple of guys could get it done in a weekend. I assume the kit you will get has the flywheel inluded? if not have it turned. good luck, paul
