Default My Blown 2008 C6 Diffrential!

I was in a middle of testing (REDACTED) my car with a modded LS1 camaro
rolling from 50km...1st gear....going smoothly and shifted 2nd ..... look out happened in below video...

This is what happened!

Yes! the differential case broke and fly away(REDACTED) !! and Thanks god nobody got injured!

I really felt sorry and bad for my C6 as somthing unusal happened to the rear end!

and if it was normal thing in C6 and common issue for the differential to broke, I blame GM for the weak C6 differential they made... very poor one as the fact that I know it later (from some members, tranny building shops, etc) that many and many C6 customers have faced the same issue with their C6 Differentials!

My USA imported corvette is 08 z51 (MZ6 6-SPEED) & has 23K miles only

I decided to buy an upgraded differential and located some good budget for that. Today after jacking the car up we discovered that also the Transmission was damaged, (the shaft comming all the way inside the tranny to the diff. was also broken!!! Hell no

For now,
I just want the car to back again on street and don't want to spend a lot of money on any bad/poor quality parts for the C6 from GM.

1- Please advice if the z06 differntial is RELIABLE & can be bolt on my C6? as the 08 C6 has the TR6060 tranny but not quite sure if it will work or not!

2- How about an upgraded differential from RPM or DTE?

3- For the gear do you recommend to rebuild it again or should I search for a used complete tranny from junkyards? what parts that I need to rebuild my tranny?

I hope if somebody can help answers the qestions, Im really dissappointed from my corvette & GM

Kindest regards,
Muhammed (ghost ls3)
from Saudi Arabia

I have the DTE build and so far so good. I do not track. I did the swap because I wanted 4:10 gearing. Either DTE or RPM is the way to go. Check their sites. Lots of options in the build. They will want your core...in your case you probably will have to come up with $$ due to your core is well exploded!! Sorry but I think this is going to be expensive.

Think about your long term power goals now while making these upgrades.

Good luck

PS after watching the video I not sure why it broke, it did not appear to be the shift. If your were spinning the tires at take off, I did hear squeal not sure from whose car, these diff. can explode with wheel hop real easy.

Thanks GTO & Boomer111

No it's not the shift,
also Im suprsied and not fully sure about the wheel hop as the car run normally in 1st gear!!

also the camera man with me confirmed that there is no wheel hop! the car launched smoothly!

I did see some broken rear ends like this but not torn intoo two pices like mine!

Sorry to hear of your loss.
A chain is only as strong as the strongest link.
Engine mods sometimes do this to a drive train that is rated for "x" amount of power.
Mod your power past "x" and you are risking the rest of the chain.

It's hard to get pissed at GM when you are running more HPs than the parts that are rated for it. I understand if this was stock car and the differential popped. But this is not GM issue

I understand that but eventhough GM can make a better diff (like the z06s) and all of us know it's a common issue for the C6

For the c6 z06, I think the diff is a way better and stronger, why they didn't provide it with at least this c6 model (ls3 equipeed) ; it's already powerfull as stock form!

---------

Please let me know if anybody installed a z06 on their 08 C6s ?

Thank you

Suggest you ask moderators to move this to C6 Tech; you'll get a lot more replies. I've heard only good things from RPM and DTE, but expect to pay the full boat for these parts to make your rear end stronger. It will not be inexpensive.

Already did and hope they will move it. Yes the differential with core will cost me over $4k without shipping internationally to my address!
also that price without the Quaife option

Im not sure if I want to rebuild the tranny again or buy an upgraded one that handle my future whp plan

a hell of $$ will be spent I know that
---------

peter pan
so I can replace my c6 rearend with a complete c6z06 rearend? is this the case only applicable to 08+ only?

---------

vettedoogie,
anything can be breakable but when it will breaks?
I don't know but this is seems to be very known issue to the C6 only! (e.g. z06 diff is good and don't break so easily)

Default Z06 had problems on the C6 at first but they changed casings!

C6 Z06 at first had problems with differential casing breaking, you could even buy a support bracket to beef up the case. Eventually, somewhere around 2007 or 8, GM beefed the case up, I believe. Wheel hop, especially with sticky tire could be a real problem with modded engines. Especially with sticky tires, stiff rear springs, stiff sway bars, and increased shocks would not let the rear squat which would put additional strain on the case. ZR1 is programed on WOT to squat to prevent wheel hop, also has different diameter half shafts to prevent harmonics. I would post on or get this thread moved to the tech section. Do plenty of research to be sure you get the right replacement parts. Sorry for your problem.
