Some Amsoil is not that exspensive. Mobil 1 at O'reilly's auto parts was $8.59 a qt the other day. I priced Amsoil XL 5w30 at my preferred customer price. It was $5 something a qt.
How disingenuous of you to compare the highest price you found for Mobil 1 to the best price you can find for Amsoil. I get Mobil 1 for $4.40-$4.90/qt all day long at Autozone or Walmart.

As noted above, Mobil 1 is cheaper than Amsoil and I can pick it up whenever I go to Walmart or at the Autozone that's within walking distance from my house.

If you like Amsoil, that's great. Just don't post untrue negative comments about another oil in a sad attempt to make your oil choice seem like the next coming of Christ.
Open disclosure: I use Mobil 1 oil. I also use Quaker State, Castrol, Pennzoil, Valvoline, AND yes, even Amsoil. I use whatever oil I think is the best at that moment in time with price as a factor...there really isn't a lot of difference between the best oils on the market.
Unless you're tracking your Vette why change from the Mobil 1 brand? I beat my car pretty good so I'm running Amsoil for good reason.
If you beat on your car pretty good, the weight/oil viscosity you choose is much more important than the brand you choose. If your oil temps are getting upwards of 250°F, you should probably be using 0W40 in whatever your favorite brand is.

Come on now Slipper, you know my Amsoil lubricated Vette is faster than yours!

but I also wanted the highest ZDDP I could get for the just in case factor so that's why I went with Amsoil. I was running RP for years prior too.

Now that was uncalled for...you know the truth hurts.
I grew up in Cobb county close to the Cherokee county border and Gwinnett county was part of my stompin' grounds...lots of good memories from 30 years ago. Today, I wouldn't consider doing any of the stuff we use to do on the same roads even if I was the same crazy stupid teenager.

Yep, the roads are far to congested nowadays so playing it safe is the norm. Now we have to travel out of state to play or go to road atl of course.
Retail to retail: Amsoil XL 5w30 $7.30 per Qt. ;Standard Mobil 1 synthetic 5w30 $8.40 @ Amazon and eBay. Don't know about box stores.
You just proved you're a very bad shopper...who buys oil off of eBay for those "retail" prices when you can go to Walmart and pay half that at retail (not on sale).
Why is the most common viscosity only up to 30, sometimes 40? We use 0-60 a lot here, and the weather doesn't get anywhere near as hot.
I would have thought that in some areas of the states where the heat really gets up, that 40 to 60 would have been the norm?
I know the GM manual states 30, but we have exactly the same engine in our Holden range, and many guys swear by higher viscosity oils.
Or is it just whats commonly available in the market there?

Maybe you can give a narrative on shopping and coupon cutting? I'm sure we would all benefit from it. I wasn't aware O'reilly's was so expensive. Oh my! Do you do Walmart late night? Was told that was when the big specials are run. Are you sure your pricing Mobil 1 synthetic and not just plain old Mobil?

The ambient temperature is not a criteria in determining whether to use a 30, 40, 50, or 60 weight oil. The actual oil temperatures during operation should be your guidance. Marketing is a big factor in what you get...I have a tough time finding 0W30 here in Florida because of the perception that a 0W oil is too thin for our high ambient temps. You'll see 10W30 more often than anything else because people are just ignorant about the different designations. In actuality, a 0W30 is a good bit thicker at 100°F than a 10W30 is at 210°F yet for some reason the 0W30 is too thin to use in Florida. Totally clueless.
I bought my 05 w/25,000 miles a year ago and the previous owners used Mobil 1 since new according to the records I could find. Oil was very dark so I changed to Amsoil, 5w30, 25,000 mile, full synthetic (Wix filter) that I use in my other vehicles. Within 300 miles the oil was very dark again. This spring I ordered Amsoil engine flush and used it before changing the oil and now my oil is clear and hard to find on the dipstick. Not knocking Mobil 1 - just sharing my experience. I "believe" the engine was a little "clogged" up with sludge for some reason. Mobil 1???? I can run my other rigs up to 10,000 before the oil starts to darken like it did right away in the Vette.
Both of my vehicles have had Amsoil since they were new. Since I only change my oil once a year in all of my stuff, my costs are much lower than people who change every 3 to 5 thousand miles. Chevy truck has 103,000 miles and used a half quart in 8,000 miles last year.
I use Amsoil in everthing I own (atv's, snowmobiles, truck and car, lawn mowers, weed eater, etc) because I am a dealer and can save over retail. I get good results. Run what you are comfortable with.

I already gave that lesson...it must have gone right over your head. Amazing how everybody else got it and you're the only one asking again. O'reilly's is always expensive, the price I quoted from Walmart is their everyday price. Do you really think I don't know the difference between synthetic and non-synthetic?
The "testimonial" had BS and unsubstantiated claims too. Oil is suppose to get dark during use, that means it's doing its job. As far as the claim of sludge in the engine, no open and inspect was done. You could run the factory fill for 25000 miles and not have any sludge so I really doubt there was any sludge in the engine.

Right on, Mobil 1 5W-30 and 0W-30 in 5 quart containers are approximately $22 at Walmart every day. I buy it when I see it because the shelves empty pretty fast. I can't believe that anyone would be paying or has ever paid $8+ per quart for Mobil 1.
Yep, across the temperature reasons for choosing oil. But your ambient temp is higher across the board than ours during summer, so cars would run hotter ( yes, depending on cooling system effectiveness ) that ours.
We run the same LS3, and in some cases LS7, but use different oils and I have heard of these issues down this side of the world.
Its highly probable we build the engines ourselves, instead of shipping them from US, which maybe part of that, using different sources for components, from GM suppliers here.

Gimme a break Glass- I hate it when people bash people on forums when they relate their personal experience and opinions. I am on several Chevy forums and I have never been bashed for expressing my opinions about car care products, car care, car parts, oil, servicing vehicles, etc.
The Mobil 1 got dark after 300 miles. No engine tear down needed to see that. Being a dealer for amsoil is only for convenience-I don't sell it retail. I live in an area where dealers are hard to find and why pay them full retail.
Glass had this in a post -"If you like Amsoil, that's great. Just don't post untrue negative comments about another oil in a sad attempt to make your oil choice seem like the next coming of Christ."
I did not post an untrue or negative comment about Mobil 1. I said clearly that I was not knocking Mobil 1 just didn't like how it got dark so fast.
I use Amsoil in My diesel trucks and I have the bypass fitler systems on both trucks. I go 25,000 miles, change the filters / top off oil level and go another 25,000 miles, then change oil and filters. My Excursion has 325,000 miles and my duramax has 158,000 miles on it. I also use Amsoil in the tranmission and rear ends. On my airboat I use PENN GRADE " aka: the green oil " in my 530CI Cadillac because I have a flat tappet cam and I need the zink, but in the gear reduction I use Royal Purple Max Gear.
PS: it cost 20.00 to be an amsoil dealer, they send you a card with a number and you can call and get the oil at the dealer price. I place and order and it is at my door the very next day.
