Same Problem Still There
I also have a column lock bypass on my 05 and (knocks wood) never a problem. No problems before the install either. The minute I installed it the lock stopped locking. I have a hunch that sometimes the problem is when the steering wheel is hard locked against the pin, the motor can't pull the pin back so I used to make a habit of parking with my wheels straight ahead with no stress on the wheel (hands off the wheel) when I shut the car off.
I also recall fighting something about the column lock install... I'll try to find my post on it. Be gentle with those plastic parts, particularly if your car has spent a lot of time outside, they get brittle as they age.
One last thing, when you go to pull the dash gauge housing out of the dash, put a thing towel over the steering column housing cover so you don't scratch the top of column plastic housing cover with the bottom of the gauge cluster.

When you put the dash bezel back in, make sure that you have the cabin temp sensor plugged back into the socket behind the slots, and it did not pop out and laying down in the bowels of the dash instead.
So just before you snap the dash bezel the in the last of the way, look through the slots just to the left of the stater button and make sure that you see the blue center piece of the sensor.
Hence if the sensor is not snapped back in, in the bowels of the dash instead, come winter time with the heater set to auto, you will think that you are going through menopause with the way the heater will cycle instead. Hence it reading the bowels of the dash, and not pulling in actual cabin air to get the correct cabin temp reading.

Also, might want to pull the cabin temp sensor and blow it out if the fan is littered with dust.
Note: its kind of funny, since with the dust off the fan and it clean, it draws more air through it /gets a better reading and will make a little more noise, but with the dust left on, makes less noise isntead (not much, but with it clean, you will actually hear it spinning when you first start the car that you may not of before when it was dirty and drawing less air through to be quieter instead.

Lastly on the starter button if it pops out of the benzel, some of then be tricky when you reinstall it. If it will not fully seat in the clips both side pushed straight in, then start one tab side in first to lock into that side clip, then cant the switch in to lock the other side in afterwards. If it will not lock in both tabs, then start with the other side first to lock that side tab in place first, then lock the other side tab in lastly. IIRQ, on mine, I have to lock the left side tab in first, then the right side tag last to get both side tabs to lock in place on the starter button to the bezel.

You are like Siri for the Corvette Service manual.
Well done sir. The time you take to do this is very much appreciated by me and I'm sure many others.
