Default Auto 6l80 drag launch help

Anyone here running stock converter? I’m a stage 3 btr cam car with full bolt ons. Car made 480whp I didn’t buy a converter yet. I went to the track and I just cannot seem to get under a 2.0 60ft. Tires don’t slip at all it just bogs every time. I tried bringing it to 2k where the car starts to move I’ve gone from idle to flooring it. 2.0-2.2 60ft all night. 119-123mph trap speed most runs 12.1-12.01 I got one 11.96. Anyone have suggestions on how to get it to leave correctly? Pretty much how to launch the car on stock converter I see some guys hitting 11.2 with that trap speed it was also 90* and 3000 DA

I can help , these stock converters are first off HORRIBLE for launching !! My guess is your getting 120-124 MPH trap speeds with a fbo setup and a good stage 3 cam . the crappy thing is you have to remove the rear half powertrain to do so and some guys including myself would advise making a cradle to hold the diff and trans to come out as one piece , then separate them swap converters then bolt everything back up . converters are labor intensive . one of my cars is an ls3 base auto an I run into the same crap when trying to launch it , best 60 ft was in the 1.9 range , converters really wake these things up .

I wish there was an easy fix but the only thing to do , the only thing you CAN do to wake this little beasts up is get a converter and bite the bullet . Yank makes a nice 3200 piece . with no trans cooler using the stock radiator I wouldn't personally go more stall than that .2800 stall would still work great and keep trans temps around the same and knock an easy 3/4 tenths off with traction . If you wanna run an external trans cooler then you can really launch these vettes like a rocket and go way up in stall to 3400,3600,3800 range that with a proper tune up and set up can get you down to the low 11's high 10s with good weather and traction on dedicated drag pack..

hope this helps

I've never ran a stock converter, so I can't speak from experience on that particular converter.

BUT, a tight converter generally likes being flashed (leave off idle and floor it) rather than being stalled up. You could try that and see if it helps.. But you would GREATLY benefit from a nice aftermarket converter and good tune!

Done 1.6 60ft on stock converter many times. Launching would depend on your setup but try foot braking to maybe around. 1500 rpm.
Experiment to see what works.

While a looser converter would definitely help, the bigger issue (which would still be there with or without an aftermarket converter) is the stock tune which is designed to pull quite a bit of timing when flooring it from a dead stop.

Check out my various posts in this thread (especially #29) where I attempt to explain in detail what's actually going on:

I will look into this for sure. I’m assuming my tuner knowing I like to launch it messed with those settings. I know he changed the trans tune a lot doing drivability things. I every now and then got it to like instantly go when I let off the brake but that run was actually a 12.2. Felt the best launch slowest time. I put an email into circle D just now I’ve heard it’s a 30 day build time and then shipping. The next few test and tune nights I will try different launch techniques. I’d love to see how you do a 1.6 60ft. That would be perfect. I was hoping to wait till winter as I want to go with a d1x and figure do it all at once.

At that time the car had an eforce on it and power probably somewhere in the mid 500s.
Was consistent in its times. Was stock trans, converter, and cam.

Find a local place ,industrial
parks work well, to do some 60’ testing. I have a perfect one by me. Knocked almost .25 off of my 60’ times. All stock I ran 12.2@122 with a 1.95 60’ spinning the tires on launch. Going to get back to the track soon.

Ya i did about 9 passes the one where it left the best out of nowhere it was my slowest pass go figure lol. I asked my tuner to look into how much timing is pulled and such from a dig when i got the cam and fbo it was like day 4 of owning the car. So it had stock tires and he said it blew them off so the logs didnt help now that i dont spin im going back. Going out tonight for some 1/8th mile stuff at a park like that figure trial by fire with someone next to me.

I found 1100 rpm was the best launch for me with the stock, the 3200, and the 3600 converters. Once I switched to a 4000, an 1800 rpm launch worked best. My best 60' times with each were 1.85, 1.70, 1.56, and 1.48 respectively. I still have just a bolton car, but manage high 10's.
Like subfloor said, the key is the tune and trial.

I’ll keep giving it a go sometimes just right it launches and catches super hard. Seems almost random I cannot replicate it yet I’ll keep trying while I wait for my circle d

I had the same issue myself.

Mods are

custom csp cam (around a stage 2)
Texas speed ported heads
headers
external trans cooler
rod mod intake
flex fuel e85

best i could 60 was a 1.9 and my two best runs were 12.0 @121 & 11.9 @ 119. Ill be install an ecs supercharger kit come mid november but i know for a fact with a stall even around 2800-3k, id be a 10 second car.

I wouldn't be so sure you'll hit 10's until you learn how to launch. Adding more power makes the launch more difficult and you're having problems now. Cure your launch issues first.

With nothing more than a CAI and a tune on an otherwise bone stock '08 with OEM RF's, I was already knocking down consistent 1.9's and 12.0 -12.1's.

I forgot to metion I was on stock tires for those runs with stock stall. I know how to leave pretty good tbh. I came from an lsa 5th geb than ran a best of 10.6 @ 134 my first pass after doing the swap. Car is long gone now and have moved on to the vette. Leaving onna stock stalled cam auto car is not the easiest thing to do
