What kind of heat protection should I look into? I want to do everything once and not have to go back and 'fix' things.

I've had the pleasure of owning three C6's. All with long tube headers. None had anything special done to any kind of heat shielding. Maybe I was just lucky. Probably over 100K miles worth of luck. Two were in the 650 rwhp range. Current one is at 500 rwhp.

let me humor you with this dyno sheet
stock MSD intake and ARH 1 7/8 headers vs
ported MSD intake and ARH 2” headers on a 450 cid
if I was buying headers for a Ls 3 and was looking for performance I would buy 1 7/8”
that my opinion
there plenty data out about headers on Ls 3 ,its your money I could have saved a lot of money .

if I would’ve bought right the first time
i would say the 2” headers =10hp

if you install a front breathing air intakes like a Vararam, Id say have the tune's AFR looked at. If you install an air intake that breathes air from inside the engine bay, you should be fine.

Not that you'll "need" it, but since you have the exhaust out, Id put in the heat shield insulation. It does help reduce cabin air temperatures. Id also wrap the starter since its right there.

you woulda saved me money? What would the smaller headers have done with the extra 1000rpms the bigger ones had?

You ported and Intake, upgraded headers and ran it out another 1k rpms. Of course it made more power up top
