Anyone else in the same boat?
Absolutely! I really love my C5 vert, but I've completely fallen for the C7. Just biding my time for a bit until nice, used, low mileage convertibles start popping up

I still love the looks of the C5. I drove the C5 and C6 and decided I wanted a C6, so that is what I bought. It is going to be a tough decision to get a c7. They look really cool, but I can invest a little money in my C6 and have a car that outperforms the C7. Oh well, it will be a while before I have to make that decision...

The replacement of the current engine formula, which has been in use since 1997 is influenced by industry executives as they wish to add fuel economy and relevancy to road car production. IRL presidents Brian Barnhart and Terry Angstadt are confident of car manufacturers' interest as the engine size reduction was agreed with them at a meeting in June.

While change is certain, the upcoming meeting will focus on deciding which formula to use exactly. Erik Berkman, president of Honda Performance Development, said the debate "is over four (cylinders) or six."

It is still unclear what the specific configuration will be, but considering "one concerns a twin-turbo", we estimate the choice will be between a twin-turbo 4 cylinder or a turbocharged 6 cylinder engine.

The regulation change also aims to increase IndyCar's engine horsepower from 650 today to approximately 750hp.

The latter should be no problem, as in Formula One's turbo era, some engines managed to produce as much as 1300hp with a displacement of just 1.5l. It should therefore also be no surprise that Renault, who introduced turbo engines to Formula One, is pushing for a similar regulation change in F1 by 2012.

As I mentioned in my above post, a stock Saab engine, with no internal modifications, can safely make 450 HP with only external (turbo, headers, injectors, software) modifications. Also, your concerns about torque only reflect your ignorance about forced induction motors. The only issue where you raise a legitimate concern is with vibration - a V-8 is inherently smoother than a V-6 or in-line 4. But, a V-12 is inherently smoother than a V-8. Nevertheless, there are constraints to any engine design and vibration has not hindered the adaptation of 4 cylinder engines to motor vehicles, whether they are road vehicles or Indy cars.
Listen, the only thing narrow minded is the idea that making that much HP from a smaller engine will not reduce the life of said engine. Using your F1 example, I remember watching F1 races, and as I recall, roughly 1/2 of all cars did not finish ANY of the races due to engine failures. That doesn't bode well on the street when a performance car manufacturer sticks a 5/50 warranty on a car, or better yet, 5/100 warranty on a powertrain. Remember, those F1 cars didn't have a warranty either. They got a new engine rebuild for ever single race and that still wasn't near enough. And it wasn't like there were some cars that were exempt from failure. All of them failed some of the time. And btw, the owners of those F1 cars was pretty diligent about keeping up on the maintenance, so they had no excuse to fail.

No, vibration hasn't stopped manufacturers from sticking 4 bangers in cars or trucks. But there are plenty of those cars out there for you if you prefer driving them. If you'd rather drive a Cobalt, more power to ya, and have fun. Saturn Sky? Fine, have at it. (Sky is probably a closer platform... but you get the idea). In any case, I can't see making the Vette a 4 cyl or V6 for any good reason. The C6 Z06 Vette gets better mileage than does the Saturn Sky with it's 2.2L 4Cyl. So, talk to me about all this fuel savings to be had? That thing must pour fuel out on the ground. A few years ago, it was EPA rated 17/24. Wtf? That Z06 could beat the thing in a drag race while towing a Tahoe.

A 4Cyl in the Vette is so wrong on so many fronts... Oh man...

with properly designed balance shafts, a 4-cyl shouldn't have any more vibration than a v8.

The C7 is quite pleasing to look at with its sharp contours. The C5 and C6 look like fresh turds with their overly smoothed edges when compared to the C7.

I am on the fence right now. The interior of the C7 is nice. It has all the electronic bells and whistles, maybe too many.

I have a modded C5 convertible. The lack of electronics and the cars physical age have me looking for a potential replacement. I will definitely wait a couple of years to see the convertible and let any issues get worked out.

I still love the smooth lines of my C5 and with close to 500hp, it is a beast to drive.

My boosted C5 Z06 has been my dream car. That being said, I think the new C7 is awesome and maybe I will toss around the idea of getting the mid or high performance trim version once it comes out in a few years.

Problem is, that the Mustang owners only see the rear of the Corvette! That is a fact!

As an owner of six previous Corvettes I am well aware that this is usually but not always the case.
