My condolences....
When a similar thing happened to my wife's new Firebird I remember while I was filling up the gas tank a guy who saw the keyed fender said to me "If I ever found the mother----er I would cut his ba11s off and stick one in each ear".
Never forgot it and everytime hear about some SOB doing this, I think of how sweet it would be if only....
Again, my condolences.
Some but not all of that will buff out. If you get it repainted, try to maybe spot paint just the immediate area. I remember I had to have my C5 front bumper reshot. ( did the whole bumper, also black, done by a really good bodyman). The repaint just wasn't as durable as the factory paint and it started to look slightly "sandblasted" after only 3500 miles because it was the leading edge of the car. Good luck.
If you can feel it with your fingernail, you've got a lot of work ahead as a DIY , or off to a body shop for $150 or so, because it is in a very visible position, I'd let a pro handle it....
$150? really? to do it right you have to repaint the quarter panel. minimum of $800. i just had the rear quarter panel of my audi a6 redone--minor dent. $1,200. had two different quotes.
Stayed the night at a the Marriot in Nashville,Tn last night and someone decided to key the front end of my car.... It's about 6 inches above the flags on the nose... Makes me sick
Your car is wide open to this type of exposure anytime it's out of your sight. It may have been an accident, but maybe not - you just will never know since you didn't see it happen.
I'll bet someone was sitting on your car while someone took their picture, but they must have had a key chain or something that scratched your car. Or someone tried to break into it and couldn't so they got mad. Did you check the whole car over?

Check with security. They may have them on camera. Also, the Marriot will pay for your damage. Believe me, they don't want that kind of publicity. Make a stink and I'm sure they will pick up your bill.
My first Corvette a 78 was butt ended while it sat in the parking lot of an ice ring. A team visiting was viable upset about sometime when I entered the rink. They put a real nice gash in the front headlight cover.
A few weeks after I got my car back in September it looked like someone keyed the top rear panel right behind the top vent on my car, it was about 12" and almost through the clear coat. I had to slowly wet sand with 2000 grit sand paper and buff out with an orbital a little bit at a time for several hours getting it out making sue I didn't yo through the paint.
I'm glad I didn't catch them, because it would be hard to drive my car from jail.
