Does anyone know if you drill a hole behind the license plate if it will go directly into the trunk? It looks like it will, but I am running into some aluminum. I want to run my cable thru the trunk like I did on my C5.
NO, drill hole inside trunk. If you put your fingers up from the license plate you will notice there is an opening.
Drill hole from inside after rear panel has been exposed so you can see the speakers.close to the bottom below the speakers drill a hole about 5/8" diameter and feed the cable thru the hole. I tied a hanger on to it and then pulled it thru the opening.
Remember, if you use a triangle plate that hooks on the two screws from your license plate, it will block your back up camera, so you need to cut a triangle hole in the bracket. After that the camera works great.
I programed one of my CNC machining centers to do the cutting.
You can feed the cable below the carpeting to the front.I used the power outlet in the trunk for my power supply.
I'm curious.. how did you run the cable into the compartment behind the Nav screen?
Small hole made in the bottom rear of the NAV cubby hole. We had the dash apart to run the wire into that cubby but no spare parts were left over so I think we buttoned it up quite neatly!
I do recall you telling me to be "creative" with the install!

Yea, I was afraid of that.. I didn't want to rip the dash apart to gain the access to run that cable. I was thinking about replacing my FT8900 with this and was going to install it in the cubby but couldn't figure an easy way to get the cable there:

So nice to be listened to!
No easy way to get the wire in there. You need to take the dash apart to drill the hole and not screw anything up.
I've run 2 antenna cables back in my C7 and the answer to your question is no.
What I did was to remove the rear inside trim (I have a Z51 and I'm referring to the plastic trim that encloses the sub woofer and amp along the rear edge of the hatch (trunk) area.)
One that's removed, you can drill a hole just large enough to pass the RG-58/U coax through (1/4"). But first, you need a snake (a wire coat hanger will suffice) and you need to push it through the hole, DOWN towards the license plate. You need the snake because the shock-absorbing "bumpers" are quite a pain to get cables past.
Once you have the snake through one of the holes near the top of the license plate mounting, attach a string as a messenger cable and pull it back up through the hole into the truck. Finally, attach your coax and pull the messenger back down to the license plate area.
Here's how mine turned out:
Oh yea.. your CB antenna is a non ground plane type, right?
Ken,
The info I have is that there is a Air Relief Door some ware behind the cut out area behind the Licence Plate. I did not read about drilling a hole.
Nicely done. My only bitch is the screen needs to be lowered in order to access the radio. On the other hand, I'm not that into C4FM (other than I need to be for my work) so my FT-8900 suits me just fine
just buy a walkie talkie and save the time and money.
Uses batteries. Batteries seem to go belly-up at the most inopportune times. That's why I installed the radio. I communicate to the other cars in the Caravan quite well, for long periods of time, with great range and clarity. I usually ride mid caravan or I can do tail-end charlie to keep track of the caravan continuity on long cruises. If need be, I use 5, 10 or 40 watts of power. 5 seems adequate for most rides.
Do not want another hand held walkie talkie ever again!
