I'm wondering if the seat belt software update has something to do with the problem since no one reported any issues with the unit until after the seat belt update?
Mine worked fine before the seat belt update but I have not used the AFM Disabler since the seat belt SW update.
No the seat belt software update. I had mine done the week that recall first came out, and no issues on my '15 with Range gizmo. Like I said before, GM seemed to have changed something sometime during '16 MY production, and into the '17 MY that broke the Range.

The first time, the codes and CEL did clear after 2 or 3 start/stops. Since CELs bug me, I now use my BlueDriver Scan (LINK) to clear them. For perspective, in the whole year I had 3 experiences of a limp-mode start, and none since I received the V7.8R1 version.
I didn't remove the codes with my scanner because I wanted to see if just removing the Range would clear the CEL.
I went driving around this morning for about 20 minutes and its still on.
Will give it a few more days of normal driving and hopefully it will clear itself.
You could also try plugging it in "hot" to clear the codes. This is from the FAQ at Range:
Unplug the module for 3-4 minutes with the key OFF
Start the vehicle and be sure it's at a steady idle
After 10-15 seconds, plug the module into the OBD2 port
This will send a DTC ALL CLEAR to all modules on the bus when it's plugged in "hot" like this
Check engine light turned off the next day. I told range what happened, and rep said "(04:50:57 PM) Caitie: If you would like to return your module and you are within the original 30-day return window, the process is simple and painless. Send the unit back to Range with it’s original packaging and the return will be processed with the purchase being credited at that time." She didn't offer the secret beta code..
So the Beta 8.1 unit is no bueno. On start up today CEL and limp home mode. This is my third unit in as many months so I guess I'll throw in the towel and call it a day.

Sorry and I was also hoping for better news. I used my ver 7.7 with my 2016 Z06 for two months before the first CEL/limp and it sounds like 8.1 isn't much better. As suggested by a poster on another thread it looks like the next thing to try is turning on the Range module (I have a switched OBD II extension cable) after starting the car.

I don't understand why anyone would continue to use something that caused CELs even if you can clear them. Something is happening to cause the CELs to be displayed. But what do I know?
It sure sounds like Range Technology doesn't have their act together. Why would they keep shipping a product that doesn't work properly. Causing CELs and having to "limp" home or to a dealership is not my idea of a quality product.
They should acknowledge there is a problem and stop selling these units until they get the software fixed. And having a Customer Service Rep tell you that if you don't like the product ship it back is just silly. Why go through the hassle of ordering one in the first place?
I mostly drive in Manual using the shift paddles anyway and will continue to do so. But I thought it might be nice to have the option to disable AFM using the Range product when in Automatic. But NOT until they get it fixed!
The problem only seems to happen if the unit is plugged in during start up, if you start your car and wait a few seconds before you plug the range in or if you have a switched cable wait a few seconds before you turn it on and you probably will not have any issues.
Just received email from Caitlin stating that version 8.1 is out of Beta and in Final. She asked if I wanted to exchange from 7.8 to 8.1 and I said yes.
