I have never left the top down when walking away from any of my verts, but I see a lot that do. With Smarttop, it's so easy to put it up as I walk away I don't see the benefit. And it's fun to start lowering it from a distance as I return to the car (which, by the way, really gives anyone looking at the car a rush!)
I do it as long as I’m in a good area and the car isn’t too far out of site. I also have a 3LT package and it comes with an interior motion detection system that sets the alarm off if someone reaches inside he car. Pretty cool.
I don't leave it down unless it is I am at the gas station and just running in and out. The main reason has more to do with birds than anything else really. I learned my lesson the hard way.

I have put the windows up, and left the targa top off, in nice areas a few times, when I can hear if the alarm goes off. I often leave it off at the Marina, when I go for Sunday afternoon drinks with people from the neighborhood, after the week end crowd goes home.
Heck, when I go by boat, I dock it at the marina and leave the keys in it.
It’s funny, with my Camaro, I frequently left it in parking lots with the T-tops off and windows down. If I was going to be gone for a while, I’d roll the windows up, but that’s about it.
I dont do it with my Corvette though. The Corvette gets a lot more attention than the Camaro, for better and for worse. I don’t want to invite trouble!

What he means is that the interior motion detection is disabled with the top removed. There is a small switch in the driver's side roof guide pin hole that is pressed when the roof is in place, enabling the motion detection. A CF member figured out that sticking a drywall anchor (or properly sized dowel) in the hole presses the switch to keep the system active when topless...
I do if it’s in my eyesight. For example I have left the top open running inside Verizon but they have glass windows. Plus the motion detection alarm helps
Drove in to work today with the targa off- I have a tight garage and takes some articulation to get out- found out that when Im getting out I lean with my back on the top as a fulcrum- when the top is not there you fall back on your *** into the seat and smack your shin under the door edge- currently bleeding through my sock. But my newly rejexed car in its locked garage with the top off looks great!
I've left my roof off while I run into a store. If I'm going to be away from it for more than 10-15 minutes I try to plan ahead and just not take it off to begin with.
My wife and I did a wine tour in Hermann, MO and the roof was off the entire day. I never had a concern about it while we were inside the wineries.
I do, who cares. If you are in an area that could be an issue, that is more of a concern than not having the top on.
I do have insurance and could careless about depreciating assets. Fun sure, and if it got totaled I would gladly take the money from my insurance and go buy another.

See post #30. That "fix" is for coupes (the intrusion alarm is disabled with the top off). The Verts still have no known "workaround" and the intrusion alarm is disabled whenever the top is down.
