OnStar - Do you use it?

You don't get that kind of response with a hand held cell phone. If that would have happened on a road any cell phone I had sitting in the car would have been thrown some place by the violent twisting of the car after the impact. Although not a problem at VIR there are many areas in the country where there hand helds show No Service due to having small antennas that don't permit much range. The OnStar cell phone has a much better antenna and so it's transmissions can reach cell towers that hand helds can't.
Over the years I have used OnStar twice due to two flat tires that occurred in places where I had no idea who to call. One was late at night on a lonely Interstate in UpState NY where the only visible living things in the area besides us were a herd of cattle.
I have used it every now and then for diagnostic purposes. My active plans are the Basic Plan that is good for 5 years after I purchased the car and the Protection Plan. The Protection Plan doesn't provide stolen vehicle recovery or navigation. If I am traveling through areas that don't have good cell phone coverage I usually purchase some yearly minutes so I can use the OnStar cell phone if I need to call somebody from one of those areas.
The other things that are good about the system is I can call for medical help for myself or somebody else or call in a crash/emergency that I see. The way cell phone and 911 systems work nowadays the emergency systems can't pick up the location the call is being made from. However, OnStar knows where you are and can inform the emergency system operators.
Cost is less than $200 per year per vehicle and like insurance I don't want to use their services because if I need them that usually means I am in trouble. I have signed up to have vehicle mileage reported to my insurance carrier so I can get my low miles discount on all 3 vehicles.
