I still have this intermittent event where the damn cooling fan does NOT turn on. Yes, my AC is on. I drove Atlanta to Orlando today. No problems at all...until some minor stop n go once I was off the interstate in Orlando. Cool outside temps and my engine temp creeped north of 220.
While I was stopped for a few minutes, I shut the car off then turned it back on...boom...fan started running. I could hear it.
UGH....so annoyed at this so random gremlin. It NEVER happens when I visit a service dept..therefore, they haven't done any corrective action.
So...question, how difficult is it to swap to the Z06 fan? Any gotchas?
both my 2014 did the same exact thing.. Test by driving over 50 miles on a highway without stopping... That should put the fan to sleep... after you stop the temp should/will rise...
You can turn it off and restart or Call your service department and have them meet you with the mechanic who will work on your car... pull up into the service department and let them see the fan not working while it is overheating... Video the whole thing... I restarted before the temp got to 240 degrees.. I did exactly that on my first one....
my second C7 I did not mess with it, I just ordered a new fan and replaced it along with an AFE intake filter
I had learned from this forum to do the restart thing. Thankfully...that has worked each time.
It's had this random thing since I bought her gently used in 2016. I haven't tracked yet...I WANT to this year but nervous about the cooling thing. I'll replace the fan before I do.
so....replacing the fan isn't an epic task?
My experience level is very basic but I'm a solid learner. Example: I have NEVER done a brake job before. After reading, watching, learning on here and YouTube, I did my own rotors and pads. Basic stuff for a lot of you fellas but it was a vertical learning curve for me. After doing that, I think I could swap out a tranny now. LOL.
I had this issue once in my 2014, restarted and fan took care of it. I searched online for 6 months to find a Z06 fan without success. Finally a forum member contacted me and I got it from him. He traded C7's and did not need it. I hope the supply of Z06 fans had caught up and you can get one. Like it was said, it only takes an hour to swap them out. Since swapping no problem at all.
I added the Z06 fan to my 2014 Z51 and it's not a tough job. Basically remove the hood duct and intake system and you have full access to it. The fan is $194 from RockAuto, and there are plenty of 5% off promo codes available if you search. Brand new OEM ACDelco part for 15-19 Z06.
It won't make your car run any cooler during normal conditions, but will keep it more stable when things start heating up. A bottle of Redline Water Wetter does make a noticeable difference as well. My 2014 Z51 consistently runs 190-195F engine & oil temps with the stock thermostat and ECU fan tables. I also have the Z06 grille.
interesting that there are such differences in engine temps. Wish mine would stay put at 200. But 205-210 is its current flux. Just a few more ticks and the AC kicks off.
Looking forward to getting the new fan installed and see how she does.
On my road trip this past weekend, I was playing with all the displays...which I hand't done in a while.
In tour mode display, there is a digital engine temp which does NOT match the analog needle temp. Are these read at two different locations in the coolant system? Or is it something completely different.
Digital read 198ish....analog/needle was 205. This was at constant interstate speeds.
I don't have my manual readily available to poke around about it at the moment.

Are you sure that you were looking at the digital coolant temp and not the oil temp?
I found the answer on this forum for my analog gauge showing 220 after the engine is warm. The 2014 Stingray models show 220 that is just a setting for the gauge after the engine is warm. When you change to the digital readout it is 195 and all is well.
The analog gauge is the "Don't scare the driver gauge" and it usually gives what I call "the relative heat is". When it goes up toward the red, pay attention. The digital gauge is the most accurate for the temperature.
Above is correct for the 2014: 220 on the analog gauge is "normal", where as the digital gauge will show the true temp, which will be lower - normally like 195 (+/- 10).

I think this issue was fixed when the GS and Z06 came out as they use the same fan for all the models now. The 14's and very early 15s had the fan/controller issue.
