Default Battery wire cut

Hi guys,
It's been a while since my last post
I have a question concerning the wire linked from the battery to the car. One is cut.
What is it used for? Nevertheless, the car's running great.
Thanks for your help.

It regulates the output of the alternator for the proper voltage and cuerrent.

Needs to be repaired.

Surprised you havent experienced electrical issues. Without that wire attached all sorts of random weird stuff happens.

Wasn’t cut. Probably damaged during a battery change. Very common and needs to be repaired.

Thanks for all your answers.
Absolutely no electrical issue but the battery does not stay in charge. After 3 days without using the car, no battery when I tried to start it.

I had noticed that the wire was badly soldered. Finally, I am not that surprised it is cut now.

In your picture you can see the ring terminal connector is still under the nut on the battery connector where that wire used to be connected. The wire should be reconnected (soldered) back to that ring connector.

It would be better to add some wire to the lead so there is less stress on it. That wire broke before I took delivery of my car from the dealer. I drove it 167 miles home and kept getting a charge error displayed on the DIC. The next day I took it to my local dealer where the mechanic found the broken wire. He added several inches of wire and the wire has never been a problem since then.

If you solder the wire into the terminal it may not last long. Soldering a braided wire can stiffen a wire and make it easier to break when flexed. The proper way to fix it is to crimp a new terminal onto the wire. Adding more wire provides the slack required to prevent the wire from breaking the next time the battery is removed/changed.

Good luck with the fix. Surprised you have not had a number of electrical issues besides the battery not keeping a charge.

When mine broke I un-crimped the lug and re-crimped it onto the wire.
After crimping I also flowed soldered onto the lug and wire, just a little, and then added stiff glue impregnated heat shrink tubing over the completed repair.
It ain't going to ever break again at this connection.

Did you get the "low battery" warning on the DIC?

That usually breaks the monitoring circuit.

I repaired mine with a wire twist/electrical tape.

Solder seal wire connector repair is probably a better repair method.

(post 11 in the above thread shows the affected wire)

Due to vibration, best practice is to crimp rather than solder all automotive electrical connections.

No, I didn't. No low warning on the DIC.
So, I fix the wire, everything back in place but now my battery is dead 😡

Well, it does influence the recharging of the battery and stuff like that.

And, it's NOT "cut." They often break when ham-fisted people replace the battery, etc. Now you know.

Not enough wire length to allow moving things around with out breaking.

GM should of added a couple inches of wire to lengthen it.

But then the price of our car would have to be increased at least $2K.

Hi Bill,
What gauge wire is correct? 12? 14? 16?
