Default $5,500 Performance Package, what do you think?

So I am not a gear head and I have never gotten into heavily modifying cars.

But I was looking at adding a little more oomph to my Vette.
A co-worker of mine had his C6 modified by this shop and highly recommends them.

My goal is to try and stay naturally aspirated.

This is the package I am looking at for $5495:

2014 Corvette Stingray Performance Package
550 BHP / 530 lbs-ft of torque

Package includes:
• 21CMC Custom VVT Camshaft
• Dual valve springs w. retainers
• Phaser limiting kit
• Gaskets, bolts, seals, fluids....
• T-304 Stainless steel 1 7/8" long tube headers
• 3" collector & x-pipe
• Hi flow catalytic converters
• Lingenfelter 160 thermostat
• AFE Cold Air Intake
• Professional installation
• 21st Century Muscle Cars custom dyno & street tune
• Chassis dyno report w. wide band reports

Shop is 21st Century Muscle Cars in DFW link: http://21stcenturymusclecars.com/200...1-1-1-1-2.aspx

Do you think a package like this is worth the cost?
Would something like this significantly impact engine life/reliability (assuming quality work and installation)?

I think this sounds like a pretty good deal. In terms of engine life and reliability it depends on how the car is driven and how it is maintained. With the cam and valve spring upgrades you'll have to keep an eye on it after it gets some miles and have them checked or replaced sooner than you would a stock setup to keep it performing the way its intended.

I stayed NA as well and have a cam in mine and love it!

Seems like a fair turn key price, and 21st is a great shop and Matt is a great tuner.

You'll pay more then you need to going to 21st. I would suggest another shop or check around. Check into Baily's Hyperformance or TSP. They are going to be tuning my s/c, meth and headers today.

Thanks for the input everyone.

#1 above all else for me is a quality job that will be reliable for a daily driver.

The vette is my only car (I have two motorcyles) and I want to make sure that any modifications done to it are not high maintenance.

I might do a track day or two in the future, it would be for learning/fun and not competition.

I'd also probably get sucked into the occasional stoplight race from some "punk"

What build did you opt for, is it custom or one of the packages they have on their site?

Custom. I have a 416 stroker, cam, heads, Alky dual meth, ARH headers, ECS supercharger. Once you start it's hard to stop!

Post up your thoughts once you get this done. I have been eyeballing this package as well. I just don't want a massive cam. Can't wait to here your opinion, and see your final numbers.

Yea it's kinda going down like his:

FI guys are keeping it and doing baby cams just with larger fuel lobe.

NA guys are doing much larger cams and having to delete it all.

Not 100% gospel but pretty close.

Well the first kit is Naturally aspirated, NO forced induction. Meaning they'll tear down and build up the engine itself with a cam, ported cylinders, etc.

The 2nd package is done utilizing forced induction from a centrifugal style super charger. Cost for parts it more expensive however labor is less as they don't have to really take anything apart, just adding a supercharger and intercooler.

The 3rd package is the same as above except is using a roots style blower instead of a centrifugal sc. Those units are a bit more expensive and require taking the intake manifold off and such. I'm actually surprised that this package isn't substantially more than the centrifugal package because the blower systems themselves tend to run $2-3k more than a centri system.

IMO...My choice of these packages would (is) #2. I prefer the characteristics of the centri SC over that of the roots because they are capable of producing more hp and have an externally located intercooler which usually yields better/cooler intake temps. And based on the amount of people on this forum that have done them and are happy with them, I'd say they're a pretty safe bet as long as you get a good tune with it. It also lets the car maintain normal driving characteristics until you hit the boost range (~2200-2800rpm before it kicks in). The other two packages will actually yield more low end torque...which some people may prefer. Really depends on your driving style.

Personally....no! I don't care for the AFE intake. Doesn't really do much. The headers are worth getting though. However their prices seem a little high for this! Vengeance in GA (who IMO, and many others as well, is the best shop in the US) will do a SC/headers/plugs and wires/tune install for 10k. Prob add meth for another grand. Personally, I would just do an ECS kit, long tube headers w/high flow cats (or no cats), and Alky meth kit, and a good tune. For their pricing, I would really want to know what kits they're using for their "custom supercharger". Also for their $8995 package, it says "custom breather". Are they talking about the intake, or an actual breather system like the LMR setup? They just don't have enough description for my liking. You should call them to get the details. If I were you, I would do a LOT of research on here on all the different SC systems available. For about the same price as the kit you just listed, you can get what I described above (using meth) and have close to 700hp at the wheels, not 700 at the crank which is what I'm sure their package is entailing.

Overpriced for a cam/header swap.. There isn't $3000 in parts there. Day of labor, even at $100 an hour is 800-1000 (and it doesn't take longer than that to do it, especially if the shop has done it several times already) So lets be generous and say $4000. Figure a tune at about $500, which is fair for a cam only car... and you are at $4500 on the high side.

My opinion is that this is really overpriced by about a grand.

Well the big question is does the package include a dod delete cam and the labor for that? Because that is FAR more labor. Heads have to come off, etc.

A cam on the LT motor is more of a job than a LS motor. Oil pan has to come off, etc. I've seen cam swaps be $2600-$2900 with keeping dod. Dod delete in the $4000 range. That's package pricing. So say $2750 for the cam and headers are $1600 to $1800 plus $600 for install if it's a z51 then that's right about it. Plus a tune.

The price is about 10% higher than you could find it somewhere else...but

In the performance arena you get what you pay for.
