With CarPlay loaded with Waze and Google Maps, the in-car nav is essentially worthless and inferior in my view. The only reason for having it is that it includes the PDR, which you can't get otherwise. I've never used in the installed navs in any of our 4 vehicles because they all are equipped with CarPlay.
The built-in NAV does have some advantages over AA/CarPlay:
1) On the 2020, you have to physically connect the phone (vs wireless on the 2021 where you can just drop it in the charger).
2) You don't have to plan ahead and download maps to your phone if you wind up in an area without cell service.
3) You get navigation notifications in the DIC/HUD.
But the amount and accuracy of information you can get while connected to AA/CarPlay is superior.
Do you need Onstar to get SMX Radio? That's all I really need in the C8. I'm using the free period now.
Right now I have Onstar in our GMC Acadia because we wanted the wifi for the kid's tablets. It was also the only wY to view weather that links up with your travel itinerary.
This your in car NAV should still work fine. You obviously would lose the Onstar turn by turn feature, but it seems silly to pay $30 a month for these types of services. You can also use Apple Carplay or Android Auto for Googlemaps and or Apple Maps.
Honestly I much prefer AppleCarplay and GoogleMaps for navigation in my car.
I have really been impressed with how easy the C8 navigation is to use. Pretty easy to put in addresses and the route guidance is quite good. I still use Apple play some for guidance but the phone has to be tethered to the car to do that.

No You do not. Sirius XM has its own trial and subscription service.
Well now after looking at the build site I don't know. It says something about a "Connected navigation system". I guess somebody else will have to reply. Sorry...

1 Connected Navigation and real-time points of interest only available on properly equipped vehicles. Requires paid plan or trial. Map coverage available in U.S., Puerto Rico and Canada. See onstar.com for details and limitations.
I think the Connected Navigation is referring to real-time traffic rerouting, etc. That information was provided by the appropriate Sirius XM subscription on my C7. I think the points of interest are similar with the ability to have new gas stations, etc added without having to buy a map update.
wouldn't surprise me if in car nav goes the way of the cd player in future units.
True. Only good thing about the in-car NAV is that it's not reliant on Internet or an outside service. If Waze/Google have issues, you can fallback on the in-car NAV. It's a decent backup but I prefer Waze. I'd love it if Waze would switch to Sat maps like Google NAV uses.
I have a 2LT and my Onstar trial has ended. There is a SD or SIM card you insert into a slot inside the back of the center console which said it was the maps. While it won't give you traffic details like Waze or Google Maps the navigation works great. I delivered Christmas presents all over the region to employees over the weekend and it was very easy to follow going to several new places for me.
So, I was looking through my infotainment manual and found something interesting. Initially I thought you wouldn't have traffic avoidance without an OnStar connected navigation service plan. Now, I'm not so sure. The manual says:
"Traffic Events (If Equipped)
This feature provides a list of events that are on the route or nearby. Touch ... and then select Traffic Events. An OnStar connected Navigation service plan is required."
I don't have OnStar navigation and this selection is greyed out for me. This makes sense.
The manual then goes on to say:
"Traffic Preferences (If Equipped)
While in Map View, touch ..., then Settings and then Map and Navigation Settings to access Traffic Preferences. When Show Traffic on Map is turned on, the feature provides an overview of the traffic flow using different coded colors. The following options are available for rerouting:
. Auto Reroute to Better Route – The system will automatically reroute if the system detects there is a traffic issue ahead.
. Ask Before Rerouting (Default) – If the system detects there is a traffic issue ahead, it will display a pop-up with details about the issue. Choose to reroute or cancel the alert.
. Never Search for Better Route – The system will not check for a better route until one of the above options is selected."
There is no mention of any OnStar plan required for this and the options are available to me.
I've been using Google Maps so I haven't been using the OEM navigation. I live in a rural area so I don't have an easy way to test this right now.
Does anyone use the OEM navigation without OnStar and have traffic flow and rerouting work?
If so, does your car need to be connected to your phone's mobile hotspot for it to work?
If you use CarPlay for nav, it will do it for you-give the fastest route and avoid traffic. If you're using OnStar, they have they're own routing guidance. It might have a different route than the one in CarPlay.
The only other system that has a restriction is the wifi...the salesman should have explained that you get 3gig of 4g or one month which ever comes first... this is a separate system from onstar. the best part of both these systems is that you can buy one month at a time, no contract needed. If you are planning a trip say through the tail of the dragon, you can buy one month of onstar and one month of wifi...full service onstar is 35.00 and wifi is 20.00 a month for unlimited gigs. really not worth it if the car is sitting in the garage 6 days a week..on a side note the carplay nav is better then the factory as you can use waze...after about 3years GM will try to sell an update to your in car nav for about 300.00. wouldn't surprise me if in car nav goes the way of the cd player in future units.
While GM will never tell you, you do not need to buy their wifi to get internet access. Simply set up your phone to mobile hotspot, then link the Corvette to the phone. You can then use and load a number of apps with no additional fees.
I have asked Ontstar to terminate the service and they have done so. Last week as I started the car and switched to Nav I got some messages that I needed to accept terms etc from a company called Terradyne or Teladine or something like that. I was in a rush and needed Nav and did not want Android Auto because the C8 Nav had a destination I programmed and needed. Touched a few entries accepting permissions and Nav started up.
Any idea what this was? Is this something that happens every few months?
Ok, just a quick question someone will know off the top of their head. I tried to use Google maps in my car and it wouldn't work. What do I have to disconnect to use maps on my phone? I'm assuming the dealership set something up I'm not familiar with.

For those of you who do this, can you give real examples and advantages of connecting the Corvette WiFi to the phone's hotspot? I'm going to try it but I would like to know what can I really do once connected to WiFi. Thanks.
