It's not like Apple or Microsoft rolling out billions. There's only apx 15K +/- You'd think that they could do all at the same time, unless they are still using a 300bps modem on a 286 pc or XT - Lol. Especially if you use your own network and ask (query). Maybe they are the same people programming Frunks.
Yeah, but they also released different over-the-air (OTA) software updates for a total of 14 different 2020 models. Models included in the other updates:
I took mine out for a short drive today and it notified me that I had an update available. Downloaded and then said to install it. Said I had to shut off the engine to do the install. I shut off the engine and left the car for about 10 minutes. When I came back and started it, it said the update was completed successfully.
I had the same experience as John described here - my car was parked in the garage when I was doing the update, and in the middle of the installation it totally shut off the system - the display went off and the start engine button went off as well, as the car was in the standby or accessories mode when I first turned on the power doing the software update. After I pressed the engine start button to turn on the power again, the display then showed the update completed. So it appears that somewhere during the installation, it needs to shutdown entirely and restart the system to get the software initialized properly, and this is quite normal for many software updates - being someone doing software for 30+ years this isn't surprise to me at all.
Some folks here mentioned that they were doing the update while on the road and then failed, and makes me to wonder if it's due to the software was not able to reset and initialize, because the car is moving so the system can't be shut down, which prevented the SW to reset and initialize, and ultimately caused the update to fail. Of course, if it is indeed required for the car to be not in the drive mode to do the update, the software should be designed with the built-in smart to not attempt to continue the update and wait for the car is parked and then continue, instead of throw off the failure message. But who knows, maybe the programmer at GM forgot about that scenario.
So I think that out of caution to avoid the update failure, everyone should do your update when the car is not in the driving mode but parked, so the software can shut the system down if necessary.
Exactly!!!!!
What you describe is the normal Update process - Frankly, it's unprofessional including the message No Network Available Usually meaning No update available.
That is why one of my key fob updates does not show in the history, but it is applied. Recommend that you allocate 15 minutes (minimum - some later may need more) to allow it do a full cycle on its own terms without interruption before you come back or restart your c8.

OHHHHHHHHHHH, We don't have our own C8 Server? How disappointing.
I would do an entire model before doing a new model - just MHO.
That makes sense now.
Well after posting #28 above, I started my HTC today and got a message there was a software update to apply. It asked me if I wanted to download it. I said yes. It downloaded then asked if I wanted to install it. Again I said yes. After a few minutes i got a message that the update failed and I should see my dealer. I didn’t have a pen to note the number of the update so now I don’t have a clue what update didn’t work. Anyone know how I can see what update I’m missing, or see a history of what has been applied or not applied? I’m an old IT software guy and I think this process needs some polish.
Same thing happened to me today. Update failed, see the Dealer
Idle speculation dept.... why would firmware update fail?
What is the sequence? My guess:
Firmware file is sent OTA along with checksum number.
File is run through checksum algorithm and compared
to checksum number. If the two numbers match, firmware
is flashed to inactive memory bank. Once complete, inactive bank
is promoted to active and the former active is updated in the background.
If checksum algorithm produces non-matching number, whole update
process is restarted. If flash memory fails during reprogramming, process stops
and the active bank is left unchanged.
Flash memories can fail during reprogramming. But, in my experience this is
quite rare.
If unsuccessful in getting it done over the air, you can always take it to your dealer who will definitely get it done. You can have it done with the first oil change.
I know it might be more of a hassle, but at least you know it is done.
Update fail doesn't mean it failed. That's what mine said when I started my C8 too soon. The update was applied, but the history log never received the entry.
I have an HTC built on Sept 18th. Got mine today and updated it. A message pops up on the info screen. You can choose to download or do it later. I did it in an In and Out parking area.
You have to download it with the car on then do the update with the car off. Seemed to start fine afterwards but its weird GM doesn't tell you what its all about.

It finally appeared on my screen when I started my C8 today. Inside the garage this time vs needing to be outside for reception. Only a few days after everyone else.
Doops, just like one of the earlier fob updates, I started my C8 after 8-10 minutes and it gave me the message to turn off the engine (again) to start the programming. Sorry this OTAU is an unprofessionally designed POS. From now on I will walk away for 30 minutes before I try to restart the C8! I'll update when done?
You don't have to be connect to any wi-fi to get the updates. You just need to have agreed to the "connected services" terms and conditions.
To connect the infotainment system
to a secured mobile device hotspot,
home hotspot, or public hotspot,
touch Settings on the Home Page,
select the System tab, followed by
Wi-Fi Networks. Select the
appropriate Wi-Fi network, and
follow the on-screen prompts.
This time I just did the regular OTAU and it seemed to take 2-3 ties as long as when I used my phone as a mobile hotspot. 15+ vs apx 5 minutes. I'm sure that it is all about reception and bandwidth. The hotspot is apparently more efficient and has better connections to a tower. If I know of an upcoming OTAU, I'll turn on my hotspot before starting my C8.

Thanks. Will try although did not see my home WiFi or my neighbors that always appears on my computers but locked with a password as is mine. I'll look again.
