There is another thread going about drivers of Autos are cheating at the drag strip..Easier to drag race than a 6M
What I'd like to know....IF....repeat IF you were going to drag race your car in $$$ (money races) MOST weekends, & drive it during the week would you get a Stick or Auto
I'll kill whatever is under me....But the stick is tons more fun...You CAN be consistent with it, it just takes work and a good set-up(Sticky track helps)
A stick IS more fun and if you're a good driver, you can be competitive. I've entered 3 events this year and have come home with 3 trophies (3rd, 2nd and 1st places.) Using your scenario, though, I'd go with the A4 (and I voted for that option.) :)

Re: Stick or Automatic (Red96Coupe)
Does it really make a difference????????????????
JP you and me race alot and have been doing it for a long time. we have both raced and done very well with stick shift car. i don't see what all the fuss is about???????????????
Some race 6Ms. Some race A4s. Is a 6M harder to race sure. Just something else to think about and go wrong.
But what most people here forget is that almost everyone here bought their vette becaused they wanted a vette the way they wanted it. I'll bet none of the went to their chevy dealer and said I want to race so I;ll buy a 4A or 6M. Racing was an after thought.
When we both got on this forum only Dennis, Brian, You, me and a few others raced. We were blasted for "BEATING OUR CARS AT THE TRACK" and not being waxers. Boy have things change and now everyones an expert and a big time racer.
Funny but i guess things have changed. :blueangel:

You couldn't even say Drag racing, I get hate e-mail from the corvette purest.
Purest? You should hear them when they see me racing mine :smash: I was pretty consitant last year with the M6, After doing all the work over the winter I'm just starting to get a hang of it again after some repairs. But I still like my six speed. But if I was getting a car just for bracket racing it would be a auto.
I actually enjoy a stick for driving enjoyment much more than an auto.... but for drag racing, an auto with a converter matched to the engine torque curve is really tough to beat out of the hole... and from a consistency point of view, the last time I raced on a sticky track in competition with a enough time between rounds to keep the motor cool, I ran 7.34, 7.34, 7.34 and a 7.34..... problem was I dialed a 7.35 on that last one.
I've got a 6m, had a 94 trans am a4 and a 95 trans am a4 both were very consistent but I wanted a 6m. So I got one and I beat on it and love every minute of it. Danny Popp told me once that people used to give him a hard time about racing and modifying (heavily) his 72LT1 vette (purist waxers) and his response was that Zora made these cars to be raced, he also intended them to be buoght and raced by the average enthusiast and not relegated to some obscure existence under a flannel cover tucked away in a garage never to see triple digit speeds.
For bracket racing, it's a no brainer, a C4 automatic like yours is king of the hill when it comes to consistency. In addition, you get the added bonus of 60' times that 6M drivers would love to have.
I always love it when you see Panuzzo running around the lanes with his time slips from qualifying that are all within a couple of hundreths of each other. He even makes up some wild story that he spent "a thousand dollars on an electronic device that interfaces to the ABS unit" to get that consistency.
I prefer the 6M for the street. But the A4 can't be beat for consistency and 60 ft times at the track.

Eric, You know how I love to play with peoples minds.. :D...
However you & I both know head games dont win races, DRIVERS & CONSISTENCY do....
If you asking whether I would race an Automatic or a Stick... it really doesn't matter to me because I feel proficient with both amnd I enjoy both:yesnod: If your asking from a professional point of view when there is money on the table...... I would go with the automatic simply for the consistency..IMO:D
I've raced a '69 396/375 Camaro, '70 Chevelle 454,'85 IROC 305 TPI and soooo many more and I really feel the Automatic when prepared well for the track will give you the consistency your looking for ....Again IMHO:D

Yes John, it does make a difference! Being and expert and a big time racer, I still wax my car...what I don't do is take it on the street or into shopping center parking lots...It's way to hard on the car. :D
