When an anti-gun demonstration targeting an Arlington Heights gun shop on Friday prompted the owner to keep his business shuttered, protester Lee Goodman was delighted.
"I wish they'd not open for business every day of the week, because that would be the responsible thing to do," said Goodman, a Northbrook resident and one of several protesters with the organization Peaceful Communities, which staged a demonstration Friday on the sidewalk adjacent to Phil's Village Sports Center on Central Road.
Goodman said the demonstration in Arlington Heights was the eighth in a campaign the group calls the "Merchants of Death Protest Tour," which he said will continue outside gun industry locations throughout the summer.

GUN SHOP SHUT DOWN BILL STILL ALIVE
DON'T BE FOOLED - PRO-GUN GROUPS ABSOLUTELY OPPOSE HB 1016
The gun-grabbers in the Illinois House are still waiting for their chance to call HB 1016 to the House floor for a vote. If and when this dangerous legislation comes to a vote, it is extremely important that you do your part to beat it down.
Remember, if HB1016 was enacted:
1. The price of the average handgun, shotgun, or rifle would go up $100 or more.
2. Ammunition prices would double.
3. Range fees would climb to between $50 and $100 per hour.
4. You would be severely limited on how many guns you could buy, sell or trade per year.
5. Most, if not all of the independent gun shops in the state would close their doors.
HB 1016 WOULD EFFECTIVELY ELIMINATE THE RIGHT TO KEEP AND BEAR ARMS IN ILLINIOS
WHAT YOU NEED TO DO TO SAVE YOUR GUN RIGHTS:
1. Beginning today and every day thereafter, call Cook County Commissioner Larry Suffredin at (312) 603-6383 and tell the person that answers the phone that you are a law-abiding firearm owner and you are opposed to HB 1016. Call every day next week and deliver the same message.
2. Call your state representative and politely remind him or her that you are opposed to HB 1016 and you would like for them to vote against the bill should it come to the floor for a vote.
3. Pass this alert along to all your family and friends and ask them to make calls as well.
4. Post this alert to any and all Internet blogs or social media that you frequent.
REMEMBER: GUN CONTROL IS A DISEASE AND YOU ARE THE CURE

By now, probably 100,000,000 or more words have been written or uttered about the tragedy that occurred in Orlando, so I might as well add a few more. To begin, this column, as well as many others across the country, warned that such an event would happen again, and it would take place at a "soft" target, no one would be ready and it would occur in a Gun Free Zone. There really is nothing prophetic about those predictions, other than a group of politicians who either don't get or want to face reality. There are many citizens who don't want to face reality either. The front in the terroristic war against the United States and Western civilization does not have some neat little recognizable front separated from the other side by a "no man's land". The front of this war surrounds us. The only thing that separates you is the distance to the next table in a restaurant, the next person in line, either ahead of you or standing behind you, or the unnoticed car pulling into the mall parking lot.
Despite our grand sounding efforts of doing background checks, interviews, intelligence gatherings, Terror Watch Lists and No-Fly Lists, our efforts look more like those of Inspector Cousteau of Pink Panther than those of Sherlock Holmes. The problems, I believe, are trickling down incompetence or old fashioned denial from 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. It is also far easier to call for gun control than to face the knotty problem of terrorism and is easier to blame an object rather than a person, group of people or a belief.
I'm sure that it is not news to you that the Obama/Clinton team is going to make our guns and the Second Amendment a target in the 2016 Presidential Election. The bad news for the Obama/Clinton campaign is that 2016 is on track to set a new record for background checks - 28,000,000. The present record was set in 2015, at 23,141,973.
I look for the anti-gunner attacks to be based on the Terror Watch List and the "No-Fly" List. Neither of these lists would have stopped any terror attack. Moreover, no one knows how you get on this list or how you get off it but both of these lists are laden with errors. The Orlando shooter was removed from the Terror Watch list a short while ago, by the way. It is going to get nasty. How nasty? Here are a couple of examples. The New York Times carried an article by Adam Winkler, a UCLA Law Professor, suggesting a "No Buy" list. A person would get on the "No Buy" list by the ruling of a secret court based on evidence presented by the Attorney General. Of course when a person discovers that they are on the "No Buy" list they can appeal the ruling. How very magnanimous of them. Rolling Stone supports repealing the Second Amendment, plain and simple. So the answer is real nasty least for law abiding gun owners.
At the end of May, the total number of ICCLs stood at 178,736. FOID cards were at 2,016,929."

Democrats from Illinois spoke out Wednesday during a rare, raucous sit-in on the House floor, demanding votes on gun control.
They threw decorum out the window and, with C-SPAN's camera shut off, spread the word with tweets, snapshots and video.
Rep. Tammy Duckworth, an Iraq war veteran, sat with other lawmakers on the chamber's floor. She'd removed her leg prosthetics and secreted her smartphone inside one of them so the phone wouldn't be taken away.
Members took turns making speeches.
"Chicago is going through an epidemic of gun violence that is horrific," Duckworth said. "It is absolutely horrific."

WHAT: Gun Control Recruitment Rally
WHEN: Friday, July 8, 2016, Plan to be there by 7:00 PM
WHERE: DuPage Unitarian Universalist Church, 1828 Old Naperville Road, Naperville
The gun control movement has scheduled an antigun propaganda film viewing and gun control recruitment rally in the western suburbs.
It's imperative that we pack the rally with as many pro-gun folks as possible.
Remember - this is an election year and you can be certain that this rally will be used as a launching pad for efforts to defeat our pro-gun friends in the legislature.
If you don't show up for this rally, the 2nd Amendment is left defenseless.
WHAT YOU NEED TO DO TO PROTECT YOUR GUN RIGHTS:
1. Plan to attend this rally and confront the lies about firearms and firearm owners.
2. Pass this alert on to all your firearm-owning friends and relatives. Encourage them to go to the rally too.
3. Be sure to post this alert to any and all Internet blogs, chatrooms, and social media sites to which you may belong.
4. If the media is on hand at this event, approach them and tell them that you are a law-abiding gun owner and that you are sick and tired of being blamed for the misdeeds of criminals and international terrorists.

It was a group divided during a demonstration outside of East Dundee's GAT Guns Wednesday.
On one side of the store's sign fronting Route 25 stood about a dozen people wielding signs against gun violence.
The crowd on the other side was made up of gun advocates who said they were there to defend the Second Amendment while also standing up for the other group's First Amendment rights.
GAT Guns was the 11th stop for members of the Peaceful Communities volunteer community organization on their campaign called the "Merchants of Death Protest Tour." They plan to continue to visit gun stores throughout the summer in response to the mass-shooting of police officers in Dallas and recent controversial shootings by police officers in Minnesota and Louisiana.

MADISON, Wis. – Wisconsin residents who can't obtain photo identification will still be able to vote in November's general election, a federal judge ruled Tuesday, carving out an exception to state law that requires all voters to show photo IDs at the polls.
U.S. District Judge Lynn Adelman in Milwaukee issued a preliminary injunction that allows people who haven't been able to obtain IDs to vote in the Nov. 8 election if they sign an affidavit explaining why they couldn't get identification. But the judge declined to make that option available for the Aug. 9 primary, saying state election officials don't have enough time to prepare for it,

Recent shootings involving high-powered weapons may be lending momentum to a bill that would allow Illinois cities and villages to enact bans on assault weapons.
State Sen. Julie Morrison (D-Deerfield) is pushing Senate Bill 2130, which would restore the ability of cities and villages to adopt ordinances similar to the Highland Park measure that survived a constitutional challenge last year.
During a press conference Tuesday in Highland Park, Morrison said it was time to push for the measure.
Morrison said that if Illinois and the federal government can't enact stricter gun laws, "Then at the very minimum we need to allow our communities to make that decision for themselves to be safe."

SPRINGFIELD — The Illinois State Board of Elections’ online voter registration system remained down Thursday afternoon in the wake of a cyberattack last week.
The attack on the statewide Illinois Voter Registration System occurred July 12, and the system was shut off July 13 as a precaution once the board realized the severity of the attack, according to a message sent to local election authorities.
Hackers exploited “a ***** in the armor in one small data field in the online registration system,” said Ken Menzel, the board’s general counsel.
“We’re in the process of analyzing the tracks left by the attack,” Menzel said. “We’re still not ready to say exactly what might have been gotten into.”
The registration database is a frequent target of cyberattacks, he said, but “this is the first time that we’re aware of that anybody’s gotten into anything — not for lack of trying.”

Pope County has the highest number of concealed carry license holders per 1,000 residents, according to a report that examines data provided by the Illinois State Police.
The report, released earlier this week by the organization Reboot Illinois, shows the number of active concealed carry license holders in each county, along with the number of people who have had their licenses suspended, denied or revoked.
Cook County has the highest number of licenses issued — 47,000 — but ranks last when it comes to the number of license holders per 1,000 people.

Three years ago, Illinois became the last state in the nation to legalize the concealed carrying of firearms. Since then, the Illinois State Police has distributed more than 181,000 licenses, according to a recent report by the organization Reboot Illinois.
A number of Southern Illinois counties appear high on the list of per-capita concealed carry license holders, and Pope County leads the group, with 42.3 license holders per 1,000 residents.
Reached by the Southern last week, Pope County Sheriff Jerry Suits said, “We haven’t had any troubles down here at all with it (the concealed carry law), and I don’t expect any troubles with it. It’s a good thing for Illinois, and I think it’s a good thing for Pope County.”
Sean Smoot, director and chief legal counsel at the Illinois Police Benevolent and Protective Association, agrees that the concealed carry law has had minimal effects on law enforcement.
“So far it’s had, frankly, very little impact,” Smoot said. “I think there were concerns voiced by opponents to the law that it would create a more dangerous atmosphere for law enforcement officers. We have not seen that bear out since the law has come into place. The fact of the matter is, it seems to me, that most of the folks who apply for and get concealed carry permits are very conscientious about the law.”

ILLINOIS -- Possessing pot is no longer a serious crime. Governor Bruce Rauner signed a bill Friday removing criminal penalties for having a personal amount of marijuana.
The consequence of having the drug is a civil fine, similar to that of a traffic ticket. The law makes possession of up to 10 grams a civil violation with a penalty fine of up to $200.
Adults will no longer face jail time and the offense will automatically be expunged preventing a person from having a criminal record.
Illinois is now the 21st state to remove the threat of jail time for simple marijuana possession.
ISP responds to new pot law
http://www.illinoishomepage.net/news...to-new-pot-law
ILLINOIS -- Illinois State Police Director Leo Schmitz responded to the passing of Senate Bill 2228, which decriminalizes possession of smaller amounts of cannabis.
He released this statement:
The safety of Illinois citizens, and the motoring public, will always remain the utmost priority of the Illinois State Police (ISP). ISP officers will continue to enforce the law, while being mindful of the penalty changes for smaller amounts of cannabis. The public is reminded that cannabis possession without a medical marijuana card is still illegal; the penalty and fines have changed. In addition, drivers under the influence of cannabis will still be arrested and prosecuted.
People found in possession of "not more than 10 grams" of marijuana can be ticketed and given a notice to appear. Authorities will no longer have to make arrests for the offense.
Officials say the confiscated drug and paraphernalia will be seized for evidence, and would be destroyed after a court appearance.
The violation would be expunged from one's record on or before the following July 1 or January 1.
