What type of paint should be used as a guide coat for sanding? I went to a Corvette Restorers shop who stated that he does not use a guide coat for sanding. He stated that using paint as a guide coat for sanding is for metal cars and not for fiberglass. His reason, fiberglass is porous and not all the guide coat is sanded off. The left over guide coat left in the pours of the fiberglass can effect the final paint job.

Try the 3M dry guide coat..it is a powder (carbon).
Since guide coat is not generally applied to bare glass there should be no issue. A body which has been ineptly prepared for primer might have pores or other flaws large enough to "hold" a guide coat applied to the primer. One would hope the shop preparing the car would have techs who are better than that working on paying customer's jobs.
