The "Will This Seat Fit In My Car?" thread
Folks,
An often asked question when it comes to installing a race seat in one's car is "will this damn thing fit?" or "how do I make this damn thing fit?" You often don't want to be the first guy to try and put a seat in a Corvette, so you spend hours bouncing around the Internet to see who else has made it work. I myself have two customers having problems right now, one of whom is trying to stuff a seat with a 500mm base into a C7 with our mount with much consternation. I would have told him I don't think that's ever been done before had he mentioned it to me, but then again I haven't searched the internet for hours trying to find out. SO, let's try and consolidate all of our seat mount data into one thread. That way anyone who's installing a seat will be able to look here to see if it was done and how it was done. I'm thinking if we can keep it in some set format it will make the data easier to peruse. Just copy and paste this into your response and fill in the blanks. Please see below: Generation, Year, and Model: Driver Seat: Driver Mount: Driver Sub Belt: Passenger Seat: Passenger Mount: Passenger Sub Belt: Harness Bar or Cage: Interior?: Carpet?: Stock Belts in car?: Driver: Notes/Pics: Simple enough? If there is anything anyone thinks should be added please let me know. I'll start first below. I think this will be a good way to take the guess work out of a lot of people's interior plans. I hate selling something to a customer and then they have issues because I can't possibly know everyone's setup. |

I used Vetteworks Simulators. But, the normal installation requires pulling the stock harness out of the stock seat. To make the switch out easier I ordered a replacement seat harness from one of the forum vendors. Seat harnesses can be ordered two ways....with heat and memory....or without. The harness without heat and memory is only. In addition to the harness you will need three plug in simulators (two for pre '08 cars). One simulator is for the seat airbag, the second is for the seat position sensor, the third (for '08+ cars) is for the seat belt pretensioner. Here is a picture of the three simulators. The two yellow simulators (airbag and pretensioner)fit together and make one plug. The black plug attaches to the harness and simulates the seat position sensor. http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/a...t/IMG_1954.jpg Here is a picture of the harness (without heat and memory). http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/a...t/IMG_1797.jpg Here is a picture of how I modified the harness. You only need the pink and green wires going to the seat position sensor (or simulator in this case) http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/a...t/IMG_1953.jpg This is what the seat area looks like with no seat. The yellow plug is for the seat airbag (and pretensioner in '08+ cars). This is where the two yellow simulators plug in. The wide black plug is where the harness plugs in for the seat track simulator. The black simulator plugs into the other end of the harness. http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/a...t/IMG_1504.jpg This is the only picture that I have that shows how the shoulder harness was installed. It is touching both the floor and the roof. It absolutely will not install in a C6Z or other fixed roof C6s. I had to remove the roof to be able to drop the mount onto the studs. Other than seat height, it fits perfectly in the car. About 1/4" clearance to the door panel, and no transmission tunnel issues, other than it being so tight to the tunnel that it is difficult to use the factory 3 point (required for state inspection, never actually used otherwise). I will try to get some pictures later. If I forget and someone comments to remind me, I will definitely upload them. Also, I found a great solution for installing the 3 point into the C6 (and I'm sure the C5 and C7 as well if they use the same belt). As many of you may know, the seatbelt receiver that is attached to the stock seats has a bunch of crap attached to the side of it that would make it impossible to install next to a fixed back seat. I found that the receiver out of the back seat of '05-'14 Mustangs works perfect as a replacement and is much smaller and more convenient! It won't get rid of your airbag light, but it will help you pass inspection if needed. |

Used 1 extremely long stud on the rear outside for each seat so there was enough thread engagement with the BK stabilizer bar bracket added in to the stack. Had to cut the BK stabilizer bar bracket in 2 pieces and weld it back together so it would go OVER the AMT seat bracket (it normally goes down the dip in the floor pan to the OEM studs) since it wouldn't clear the AMT bracket if underneath. Drilled the BK stabilizer bar bracket wider to clear the larger seat studs. Removed carpet padding from behind carpet on trans tunnel. Cut 1/2"-3/4" off the inside corner of both seats so they would face forward better (driver side is still at a slight angle) when jammed against the trans tunnel. Staggered the AMT brackets when I mounted them to the seat and shimmed them so the fronts would get more square (the seats are narrower at the back, causing the brackets to splay wide in the front). That's what was needed just to get the seats to fit in the car, mounted, and mostly facing straight forward. The belts, seat height/angle relative to the harness bar, etc were a whole different puzzle, which I don't think is part of the scope of this thread. I can go into that if anyone is interested or shoot me a PM. https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.cor...9ccaf7a4b0.jpg |

I mounted the Sparco Alpha after getting the AMT seat mount. The install went smoothly with the AMt mounts proving plenty of adjustment for fore and aft with the main holes and slot on the floor rails as well as minor adjustment using the holes in the brackets. It also allows for adjusting rake/angle. The seat mount and hardware were top notch and super high quality fit and finish. The seat is supposed to be the new replacement for the Evo II US which I tried ordering through several companies and had a friend contact multiple distributors without success for one. The dimensions are very similar to the Evo II US in every area but it has a fraction smaller base and wider shoulder wings. It touches the center trans tunnel on the front edge and along the side until the lap belt area. In a non Zo6 it may be even tighter. The shoulder support wings are close to the door panel but not touching. https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.cor...b9b262e23a.jpg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.cor...c8ea121284.jpg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.cor...9da2805976.jpg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.cor...fd5d05e3e3.jpg I used mounts that the previous owner used to mount the lap belt. It is 2 brackets that mount to the rear seat studs and then uses a locking chain link/carabiner like mount to mount lap belt ends to the link. I plan on mounting the lap belt ends directly to the seat rails as this should be a simpler, less complicated and stringer mounting method. It also won't rattle and frees up the rear mount studs making it easier to install the rear nuts. So far I am very happy with the seat for fit, support and comfort but need more time to give a full endorsement. I am very happy with the AMT seat mount and the service I had with AMT and with US Race Gear where I bought the seat. I forgot to mention I used a new GForce 5 point cam lock harness. |

The shoulder wings severely interfered with my ability to shift, the harness strap openings were too low, etc. I went with an extra tall RaceTech RT4009WTHR, and I love it! It is one of the most comfortable race buckets I've ever sat in. I was going to go with Racetech's narrower THR variant of this seat, but Racetech's sales manager suggested getting the wide and tall version and just running the little side pads they offer. Those pads did the trick, and I fit super snug without much wiggle room. The seat really is about as big as you can squeeze into the car. As noted by others, I also took the roof off which made getting it in and out much easier. It just about touches the B Pillar trim pieces near the roof, and it just barely kisses the door panel when it closes. Contact is so slight, that it's not even leaving an impression in the door panel. On the inboard side it is right up against the tunnel, but no interference. I have it basically sitting on the floor on the back mount, with the front lifted for some thigh support. One of the really cool features of this seat is that it has four mounting holes on each side, two lower and two upper. That really increased the mounting flexibility and helped me achieve a comfortable driving position. Below are a couple of pics that show the difference in size between the Sparco and the RaceTech. For reference, I also took a pic of the Sparco label to show which exact model it is (because they have a bunch of variants and it is confusing!). In this first pic you can see how much higher the shoulder wings and harness openings are on the Racetech. Both seats are mounted as low as possible in this pic for an apples-to-apples look. I later had to significantly adjust the mounting on the Racetech to suit me better. https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.cor...dc8a5cdaa3.jpg Below you can see the large difference in side bolstering between the two seats. The RT bolsters hold my ribs much better, have more padding, and are far comfier for my particular body type. https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.cor...0f5d647b81.jpg Here's the label from the Sparco that is too small for me: https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.cor...4fcbd2d2cc.jpg To get the Racetech in the car I had to run the AMT vertical mounts on the outside of the rails on both sides of the driver seat. Since the AMT mount has so many holes and looks like Swiss cheese, that made it possible to pull everything together! I was impressed by the quality of the billet pieces, all of the included hardware bits, the sub belt mount, etc. Mark does a great job on these. They are extremely versatile, very nicely made, and it's clear that a lot of thought went into the design. Below you can see how the seat sits on the outboard side. After tearing racing buckets up during install on several previous car, I coated this one with a healthy dose of painter's tape to protect it while I wrangled it into the car over and over again while tweaking the position. https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.cor...d48520876c.jpg Here you can see how close the halo sits to the B Pillar. In my selected position, you can slide a piece of paper in and that's about it. Again though, it will depend on how much rake you have to the seat, how far back it is on the rails, etc. https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.cor...d3cfc9fd39.jpg Here you can see that it just barely kisses the door panel: https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.cor...e41047f62e.jpg On the inboard side it also just kisses the tunnel, but isn't pressing hard on it. https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.cor...4f1f47445f.jpg A big thanks again to Mark for the beautiful seat mount and guidance. I'd also like to plug Apex Performance (where I bought the seat) and Racetech. They were a big help in selecting the proper seat to fit my needs, and they provided great communication and service. Helmet is about 1/4 inch of the headliner Notes/Pics: 4 lb lighter than factory. Marrad brackets are about 20lb and the seat is 18 lb. Edit: Forgot to mention that the Marrad bracket is too wide for the seat, making the side mounts bend inwards and making the sliders not very happy. Edit2: Also, the Marrad bracket is VERY strong. The powder coat is flawless. It looks like it was made in a small shop but the result is very professionnal. It also gave me just enough room to fit in the car with my helmet, where a sparco braket would have left me with no space. This combo makes you sit at least 2 inches lower than factory. Edit3: After a year, I noticed that the seat is a bit too much on the right; the driving position isn't centered. While this isn't exactly uncomfortable, I found that the stock position placed my arms perfectly on the armrests, where now it's weird a bit. Also, the seat end up in the door pad leaving a small bump into it. |
Hadn't considered this OMP for a C5. Does it fit well in the car? Any obstructions or contact with the door or trans tunnel? |

Hadn't considered this OMP for a C5. Does it fit well in the car? Any obstructions or contact with the door or trans tunnel? The one I have fits very well, does not hit anything and allows a lot of leg room. With the factory seatbelt, it touches the center console a bit, but aside of that, it could be a stock seat. However, being tall, I find it not very easy to get in and out of the car; I have to bend inward quite a lot, open the door entirely and I lift the steering completely (thank you GM for making it adjustable). I've had few strange stares when trying to extract myself out of the car, until they realize what seat was in there. However, once in, it is surprisingly comfortable; I've had no discomfort doing 3+hours roadtrips (factory suspension). Also, this seat appears to be made for shorter people, my backarm touches the shoulder support when shifting. Since I am sitting away from the console, it is more an annoyance than a problem, but I could see someone with shorter legs having a hard time shifting. With this combo, I am actually sitting lower than I was with the factory seat. The Marrad kit is very well made, very sturdy, fit right in the factory holes with no hassle and really gives you the maximum amount of room. |

I went with the 4 point ASM Schroth ... I have a Hans device too and previously had the 6point Schroth Profi II in my M4 but this time I decided to go ASM because I want the harness to give a little since I don't have a full cage, only a harness bar.
A few other points - Everything went together perfectly, the Marrad base is very well engineered. Lots of adjustment forward and aft. - Seat is so light and also so rigid! Very impressed!! - Seat is narrow so it fit with no rubbing - Sharkbar harness bar went in with zero issues, took me 30 minutes to install - Very well engineered - I was able to quite easily retain the 3point belt setup. The pretensioner in the belt won't fire but that just means the airbag will fire harder. Risk I'm willing to take. - Now I feel so much better in the car, very connected and I feel part of the car .. not sitting on top of the car, if you know what I mean. I had previously debated comp seats and decided I don't like the sofa-like feel of the comp seat with no bottom cushion side bolstering. - Also - PLEASE PLEASE Tape / Painters Tape your door sills and other soft surfaces.. I managed to scratch my door sill plastic by being dumb.. learn from my mistakes.. Also - I don't know what all the fuss is about with the install - I had zero problems and was able to adjust the seat to exactly where I like it. I can go back and forward easy if I want to. Mirrors dont won't anymore but can be adjusted by hand. Steering telescope function still works which is awesome. I'm 5'9 170lb for reference. https://photos.smugmug.com/Toys/GS/n...86knZZn-X3.jpg |

Personally, I think the "A" measurement of 580mm would make it very difficult to not modify the door panel. It is close with an HTE-R 400, but at less than an inch in total additional width, or 1/2" per side, I suppose it could work.

I'm really not going to mess with it unless there is at least 50 lbs to be saved total by replacing both seats. |

Comp seats weigh 56 lbs, or at least the passenger side does, according to this thread https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums...ld-thread.html If I remember correctly my drivers side seat felt heavier than the passenger side did. The racetech seat weighs 20 lbs but I'm not sure what the AMT mount weighs.

Full interior Corbeau Forza seat Corbeau C5 seat adapter and Corbeau dual locking slider The shoulder support BARELY touches the door panel when the door is closed. I could slide a piece of paper b/w them so it's not forcing against the door. Only needed to oval out the seat bracket holes since I assume my seat studs were slightly off during the vehicle assembly. I'm 6ft and I did not see a need to do any shimming or get stud extenders. Probably a dumb question but no better place to ask it.
I'm installing a driver side seat this off season using the AMT ultra low mount and a Brey Krause harness bar. Does it matter which stud extenders are used (marad vs vetteworks)? Is two enough for just the rear or is it ideal to use four to keep the mount level? |

I haven't unpacked the AMT ultra low seat mount so I'll have to check for the extenders. I did pay extra for the sub belt mount so I should be covered there.
Thanks for the prompt response. |
Glad I could help. I was probably the inspiration for Mark to start this thread. I bought 2 of his mounts and put Racetech 4119w seats in a C7. It was a tight fit and I think everybody thought they wouldn't fit. I managed to get them in and the AMT mounts worked great.

Notes/Pics: Notes specific to the OMP seat. I had to remove the butt cushion to sit low enough in the car. With the cushion and head liner, my helmet was touching. This seat holds me in place much better than the sparco I had previously. I move zero side to side now. The seat is much higher on the thigh. It is also more open in the shoulders, I felt like the sparco pinched my shoulders in. My challenge is that when I take a sharp left turn (VIR turn 4) my hand hits my leg. I have the large stock wheel and the seat doesn't allow your leg to move. Guessing I'll need a slightly smaller wheel in the future. Comparison notes: OMP seat works! It holds me in place really well and I like the safety aspect of the halo. It sucks to get in and out of the car, like sucks bad! The sparco is a nice seat, i just found myself sweating from still having to hold myself in place. I've also watched enough crash videos to feel like it was time for the halo upgrade. I'm piggy-backing the earlier comment by .archfarseer. regarding the help by Mark at AMT.
I recently worked with Mark to secure a seat that met and fit both my car and budget needs. With Mark's assistance, I ended with a Sparco Evo II US with MTI Racing rails to install into a 2007 Z06. My intent was to purchase a seat that would fit without removal of any interior pieces. During the negotiation and final dealing, several twists occurred that could have jeopardized the final purchase. Mark did his best to meet me half-way to assure my satisfaction. Overall timeliness was satisfactory despite our dealings occurring during the Holidays. Located in the NE, I look forward to warmer temps to allow for its installation. I'll post more observations then. I'm 5'11", weigh about 185 with a 36" waist. The seat fits me perfectly with all cushions in place. Thanks again, Mark, for your patience and helpfulness. You can't beat Mark. When I installed my seats I was the first one to put these Racetech seats in a C7. They supposedly wouldn't fit. I replaced both seats and managed to make it work with the AMT mounts. I had to use 2 left side mounts on the right seat and 2 right side mounts on the left seat, or something like that. Since I already had mounts for both seats it worked out fine. When I called Mark about it he offered to do anything he could to get it working. Once I got them installed he started this thread :) .

I did passenger first so I could knock the sensor relocation out. AMT brackets came pre drilled and tapped for the sensor but you do need to source screws at the local HW store. Seats are tight but fit, no complaints there. these brackets are works of art, very impressed and worth the money. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/DY...v=w415-h737-no Both seats in! https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/8y...b=w415-h737-no |

Notes/Pics: I'll come back and add some pics later or if anyone needs help feel free to PM me. I installed a MOMO wheel with NRG hub adapters to make it easier to get in and out of the seat. Marks assistance and time in helping me sort thru a few challenges was paramount. His customer service is the best in the biz. Yes, you can fit an 18" seat into a c5 going this route. I had to mount the AMT brackets on the outside but it worked out perfectly. Grassroots Motorsports has a great video on this exact thing regarding their c5Z project car. |

Driver Seat: Ultra Shield 16" Pro Road Race - Custom fit - 2" taller - Standard shoulder width Driver Mount: AMT Driver Sub Belt: AMT - Using AMT's rails, not the sub belt adapter as it wouldn't fit as low as I have my seat. Harness Bar or Cage: Brey Krause Harness Bar with I/O Port backing plate/brace mounted to back of UltraShield. Interior?: Full Interior up front, left rear interior out after installing BK bar for weight reduction and easy of service; plus exhaust is louder! Carpet?: Trimmed driver side carpet under seat due to C7 floor pan lip/edge along center tunnel. Stock Belts in car?: Yes but not being used. Driver: 6' 3" 260lbs Notes/Pics: Ended up modifying the C7's center wiring harness sheath to allow the seat rails to sit on the floor. |
Thanks for posting this. I needed a neat way to mount the seat backing plate and the I/O port option is great. Just ordered 2.

No love for the C4 guys? I know a Corbeau Forza WIDE wont fit....

Look into the Sparco QRT R.
Fits in small cars. I have one in my c5 waiting on brackets. fits me and the car just fine. |
Harness Bar & Seat Rails
Gents, I see many of you are using the low profile style seat rails/mounting brackets by AMT, Marrad, MTI, etc.
Are any of you using this with a harness bar (Brey Krause, Sharkbar, etc.)? I have the BK bar and I worry that if I use a low profile mount I will have shoulder belts angled upwards (from seat towards harness bar) rather than 0-20* downwards. My seats alone are 890mm high so I don’t think the problem is there. Please let me know how you’ve avoided this, or if you’re just accepting the upward angle. Thanks Anthony |

Depends on the generation and your seat. My custom fit Ultrashield 2" taller with seat on floor has harnesses perfectly level 0°. Sharkbar in a C7 is super low. I would fit seat first then do harness bar accordingly.

Thanks, the car is a C6 Z06 just to clarify.

The C6 sharkbar is lower than the the BK. The sharkbar mounts below the shoulder belt location while the BK is mounted almost at the same height as the shoulder belt mount. Just google the images and you’ll see.

The QRT is molded so you sit about 3/4" lower, and it does make a noticeable difference with head room. And not to toot my own horn but our mount makes the process a WHOLE lot easier than any other mount where you need to use two wrenches to get everything tightened up. I fought with my last setup with with MTI rails for what what seemed like hours. As you can see from my uncommon-to-a-Corvette X Bars my seat only goes in one way and comes out one way. Happy to say I only had to get it in and out twice to get it perfect. https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.cor...0a9b7d74fa.jpg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.cor...b166dbcc89.jpg |

Hey guys. Is leaving 3 pt OEM belts in place always an option? Or is it physically not possible depending on the seat?
Some of you leave them in, and others omit them entirely...I just want to know if this is a choice or are there some seats where they "have" to be left out for fitment. |
Anyone done sparco II QRT yet? the new light QRT shell model.
I did extensive chair testing this week, and it seems the best. |

He's talking about the Evo II QRT. Sparco is making other models with the QRT technology now. So that model would fit like a regular Evo II (so a little more roomy than the QRT-R) but still have a lower seat and lighter shell.
|
Sooo I spent way to much time researching seats, testing them, reading up on them. I haven't raced in years, and last I did it, evo II plus was the goto seat.
QRT is a new design/manufacturing thing for sparco, QRT-R was one of the first new seats, it was made as a new seat with the new way to make them. see https://www.sparco-official.com/en/r...qrt-seats.html Later they decided to make some of their older seats, with the QRT tech EVO II QRT seems to be the one that is best for taller drivers when we are talking holes for belts, only one better was circuit II QRT, but non removable helmet supports are not allowed at the nürburgring TF, also It would probably be too tall. Reading online I found multiple posts that said the QRT-R was a good for taller people, this is not true, Im ony 6'2 and my shoulders are about 1-2 inches over the top of the belt holes?! :o Looking at spec, this is also confirmed. I will be moving forward with the evo II QRT, shell is 12.7lbs, with padding and all stuff on its about 15lbs, this is lighter than carbon seats some years ago :o |
I got in an EVO II QRT today to test fit on our Ultra Low Brackets with Sliders. Obviously aluminum fixed rails are lighter but for those who need the seat to adjust, I believe I have things mapped out. When the side mounts were attached the spacing was 1 7/8" wider across the front than the rear, but our wider based side mounts were able to span the width needed.
Our Ultra Low Brackets have 4 rows for mounting sliders. For the EVO II QRT, use the row marked below. https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.cor...929cc9d9dd.jpg The assembled unit looks as below. https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.cor...2544dc69ec.jpg Using the 4th hole down and forward of the two holes in the rear, sits the seat at the lowest position, within 1/8" of the side mount base. https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.cor...a6ffe186c7.jpg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.cor...f13fd9293d.jpg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.cor...2eee2ec905.jpg You will gain headroom over stock - not as much as our ST3 since it drops between the sliders - but probably 1-2" depending on whether the rear cushion is in or out. We also have another version of the Ultra Low bracket coming out that will have tabs for lap belts on the bracket. That would provide both fixed mounting points for harness belts and mounting points for the stock belts that adjust with the seat. |
I have a qrt r seat in my c5z fits the car and me great!

Also regarding the few posts above and 6’2 guys finding shoulder harness slots that fit them, I’m that height as well and fit great in my OMP First-R. An Evo 2 also fits me nicely but the OMP seats have bigger harness holes that make fitment a bit more flexible. Much higher leg bolsters as well. Same deal for their WRC-R as well.
im still fiddling with my installation but once I get it ironed out I’ll fill out the survey/questionnaire for which this thread was created. |
