That's an interesting mod. Will you be keeping the door to the ashtray in place and will it be functional (that is, will it close over the GPS unit in order to conceal it)? Hope you post up pics of the install and the finished look.
Depending on how much I hack up the interior, the door can stay. The key is getting the USB hardwire to go straight down, so I figure a 5/16" hole drilled into the base will work. I'm still toying with the idea of pulling the door and making a color-matched bezel that still has a power port in it.

I really like that... did someone make that panel for you or did you use a sheet of carbon fiber?... how difficult was it to make the climate control fit in that spot?
When I installed seat heaters in my `03 AE vert, I needed a place to put the switches. So, I pulled the ashtray, then designed a 3D printed switch plate that would fit into its place.
Here's a couple of pics of the switch plate installed and pulled out of the ashtray hole.
I've since repainted it from black to shale using match paint I bought online.
I put my seat heater controls where the lighter was and made a Carbon Fiber coated panel that fit the ashtray opening where I put my exhaust cutouts switch, my AL Laser Jammer control and a switch for my front camera.
In my 99 I installed a SAT Radio in that spot. Took a bit of work to get it mounted but it was still working after 70k. And yes, the door still functioned

nah i made that custom panel my self, the carbon fiber sheet my friend made,
it actually fits rather well, just got to trim stuff down with dremel and find ways to keep it tucked up, took me a 1 hour because i took my time
