C6 Corvette: How to Replace the Fuel Pump

C6 Corvette

Replacing the fuel pump in a C6 Corvette isn’t exactly easy or quick, but those willing to tackle it can take advantage of this detailed guide.

It may seem hard to believe at this point, but the C6 Corvette is quickly becoming a modern classic after existing from the 2005 to the 2013 model years. That means even the newest C6 is now over a decade old, and most likely, many are in need of some maintenance or repairs. That includes things like swapping out the fuel pump, which is something that CorvetteForum member Motorhead-47 has done on multiple occasions, and as such, he recently shared that experience with us in this detailed thread.

As our host points out, this job isn’t exactly easy or quick to perform, and that’s particularly true of automatic transmission equipped cars, which have less room to work with than manuals. However, for those brave enough to take on the challenge, he’s done a great job of going into tremendous detail on how to get it done – here’s a summary of the job, though one will want to visit the thread for more intricate details pertaining to this task.

Remove the driver’s side tank

  1. Remove the five bolts holding the driver’s side tank in place (the tank should have as little fuel in it as possible, at least less than 50 percent)
  2. Disconnect the fuel line that runs down the rear of the tank using a fuel line disconnect tool
  3. Unlatch the crossover tube

  1. Rotate the large metal locking ring that secures the fuel pump to the tank by rotating it counterclockwise
  2. Pull the pump halfway out of the tank
  3. Disconnect the line that goes forward to the passenger side tank and the second line serving as a return line
  4. Now you can remove the fuel pump

Preparing the new pump

  1. Since most new fuel pumps don’t come with the fuel level sending unit, you may need to transfer the old one over
  2. Attach a piece of safety wire to the loop of one of the inside lines on the fuel pump, and the other end to the connector on the other fuel line
  3. Let the wire hang out of the fuel tank opening and insert the pump halfway

Install the new fuel pump

  1. Using the safety wire, pull the two lines in the tank and attach the clip on one line to its fitting
  2. Insert the return line into the fuel pump bucket and secure it with the nylon fastener
  3. Remove the safety wire and drop the pump in the rest of the way, then secure it with the large metal lock ring
  4. Reinstall the fuel tank
