It's very frustrating in the US because we've been paying so little (relatively speaking) for gas for so long. I appreciate living in a captilalist economy but hate the ramifications of trader and market speculation that are truly the root driver of higher commodity prices. Growing global uncertainties (e.g. Iraq war, Iran, N. Korea, terrorism) just add to the fears and speculation. Many of the events we're living through now will be in the history books for our children and their children to read (and hopefully learn from).
I just filled up last night. $3.15 a gallon for 91 octane. I'd gladly pay, and not complain one bit, if I didn't know that the Exxon/Mobil CEO got $400 Million. I put some of that money in his pocket. He can't even spend that much money, can he? After you buy an island, a jet, a few exotic cars, and a trophy bride, what do you do with the other $300 million.

Have you seen the guy? Looks like he'll have to hurry up. I don't think he'll make it to the end of this decade...
Take a look at Brazil 100% synthetic fuel from corn and suger cane. Not one stinking drop of petroleum based fuel do they use.
We need to do that and then let all the gougers who are currently putting it too us keep the crap. (sorry about the rant)
The best milage car I've owned is one I have right now. A 2001 Celica GT-S! 33 MPG city!
There's always been cheap little cars that got great mileage, albeit, a bit plain. My current '60 Nash Metropolitan gets 30-35 mpg. I had a '74 Honda Civic that got close to 40, I had a 91 Honda CRX HF that got 50 on the highway, I still drive a '98 Civic HX that never gets less than 35 and will get 40 if I drive it easy. And then there's bikes. My '89 Harley gets 40. My '87 Honda XL600R gets 65. My '74 Honda ST90 gets 80, and my favorite, my '82 Honda CT70 gets 100. The gas I save driving the little beasts, subsidises the gas eaters I drive on the weekend. Chose your weapons...
It's funny that the germans manged to produce synthetic fuel during a world war but we can't do it 60 years later....
Until you get a stable price of more than $2/gal for regular, it's not feasable from an economic standpoint. That said, there is one liquefaction plant in the US (I think in Georgia). We need more. They did it out of necessity, and now we need to do the same.
You guys don't have it nearly as hard as us...highest gas prices in the world... it hit a whopping $7.72!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YES THAT READS SEVEN DOLLARS AND SEVENTY TWO FRICKEN CENTS yesterday here... bomb whoever needs bombing to bring the prices down...may I suggest you fly a B52 over the Hague here
Turbo, I take it you're in Europe? Prices like that wouldn't surprise me over there.
Although, we're catching up to you quickly; San Diego's gas prices hit $3.15/gal for premium (stupid supercharger on our gas guzzler requires the 91 octane) and climbing. I wouldn't be surprised if it hit $4/gal for premium by the end of summer.

Yup, the Netherlands , if it hits 4 over there, we'll be paying 10$ a gallon.
Sorry, but it starts at the top and just rolls down hill from there, maybe its a communist plot . I had this whole ,long disertation on what I thought was the problems were and how to try and get around 'em, but then I remembered that I have this disease of lusting after good ole american muscle cars and Corvettes in particular and will skrimp on other things so's I can have a coupla, few, many bux , to put in my Vette's gas tank, BTW. has anyone ever figured out how much members of congress get paid in salary and benefits and for HOW LONG and for how much "actual" work/time they put in. And who is the actual source of the funds used to pay these goldbrickers? Think about it. Sorry for the rant,,,,,,,,Peace,,,Moosie

I filled up my Vette at lunch and did a quick mileage calculation. My leasure car gets better gas mileage than my daily driver. Due to the current economic condition I'm experiencing, I'll just have to drive my Vette everyday.
