I wonder if it'll work on calipers too? Maybe I could use it to make them look new again instead of painting them?

Calyx is meant to be used on exhaust manifolds. The heat from the headers bakes the paint to a ceramic-like surface. Unfortunately, it doesn't cause it to bond to the cast iron, so it is not permanent. Putting it on calipers might look OK for a while, but I think it would come off pretty easy. Heck...give it a try and tell us how it works!

maybe using a heat gun on them after it's applied might work?

Make sure it gets as hot as the manifolds does so that the caliper seals will burn.

To the OP's original question.. No the headers are not stainless steel. SS does not rust.

I believe those are factory "shorty" headers.

Calyx worked very well for me also.

Has anyone looked at the safety data sheet on it? I am wondering how safe it is to handle, and breathe as it gives a smell when it first burns off.

we had that junk on my dads 67 L79 all restored coupe. it was on there for two years. and every time we did anything under the hood and around the manifolds it would rub right off and on our cloths and hands. and to top it off NCRS judges took points off for the stuff too

Yup, 81’s have a stainless “header” type manifolds. These are also known to crack at the AIR pipe welds, BTW.

Happens to all of us. Don't know why there isn't a screen 'flag' popup when the last post was over 1 year old....

1981 and 1982 Corvettes have stainless steel "block hugger" type factory headers.

Stainless steel will corrode. This article is informative. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stainless_steel
I media blasted my headers about three years ago. I used the following products and was surprised and pleased with the results. $12.00 worth of materials.

I run autocross and the exhaust gets hot after a 60 second run with full throttle bursts.

Does anyone know how to soften Calyx once it's hard? I've had the container since '97, and had the product on my '59 exhaust manifolds since then, and it's time to freshen them up.

What does it say on the container to wash up with? Mineral spirits?? Try whatever it says to use to put it back into a liquid state. Probably best just to buy a new bottle though.

It doesn't come in a bottle, and there's nothing on the container about softening it up, and it's not to be in a liquid state. It comes as a paste, and it's best to use an old toothbrush to apply. I found a phone number on the bottom of the container, so I'll give them a call in the morning. Thanks anyhow.

Default Calyx Manifold Dressing

Talked to George at Calyx about the hardened product. He indicated all one has to do is put a little water in it until it gets the consistency of "peanut butter" and it's good to use.
