So I am really close to paint and am trying to decide on exactly what I am going to do with the colors. This is originally a silver car but was black and silver when I bought it in 1998. I love the colors and what to keep it but I am tired of people asking if it is a pace car and when I tell them no I get all the questions of then why is it painted like that. So I am thinking of keeping the black and silver but not using the red pen strip. With no pen strip it may look unfinished so I am thinking of using a silver pen stripe just above the parting line between black and silver. Think silver anniversary corvette pen strips. Any thoughts?

I always liked the Pace Car paint design but also didn't want to go with black/silver for the same reason as you. I ended up going with dark green/silver combination. I am really happy with it and never get the "pace car" comments.

You are doing excellent work. I really like the details you are putting in the car.
As far as paint, I am pretty sure you have thought of this but I was thinking keeping with the same colors but with black on the bottom and silver on top?
I posted this as its own thread in the performance section.
Paint Color Help!
So my 79 is going to the paint shop in the morning and I am second guessing the color!
I have owned the car for 15 years and it was painted black and silver like the pace car when I bought it. I had decided to keep the black and silver but do the pen strip between the two colors more like the 78 silver two tone so it would be black on top and silver on the bottom but a silver pen strip and no red pen stripes.
So here is the problem, I am thinking of maybe going with 2014 Cyber Gray, or maybe two tone but black on top and Cyber gray on the bottom. If I did the Black and Cyber gray it would have a pen strip 1/4 in above the paint dividing line just like the 78 silver two tone.
Help with thoughts or ideas please.

Your car looks really good. So what I am thinking is same two tone and pen strip as yours but black on top and cyber gray on the bottom.
Cyber gray is a beautiful color, but I have to agree with Priya. I don't think there is enough contrast with the black. I might suggest a Pace Car style paint with cyber gray on top and code 13 (silver anniversary upper color) or code 47 (pace car lower color) on the bottom.
Choosing a paint color is always an agonizing decision. It is a very expensive repair if your not happy after it is sprayed. I studied color chips for 2 months before going with the green I chose (the silver is code 13 which is the original color of my car), and even as we rolled it into the spray booth I still had doubts. When it was sprayed and put back together I am real happy with my choice.
The original Pace Cars used tape stripes for the red pin stripe at the body line and also the hood stripes. When I painted mine I did all the striping with paint and then sprayed the clear coat over everything so you cannot feel the paint separation. I also carried the striping into the door jams and door frames.

As always, it's your car and your decision. Good luck!
I bought and painted 5 different model Corvettes and after doing that and the protest of my wife against the pace car paint job I am going to go Black but with the bulge on the hood 2014 Cyber gray with a 1/4 pen stripe bordering it.
I am going to do the hood different because a 79 corvette all black just seams "blacked out". I am hoping this gives it a subtle difference but it still feels like a Corvette theme paint job.
Still at the paint shop. They are really doing a lot more than I expected The extra time has been trying to get the door gaps correct and lots and lots of block sanding. They are doing some extra body work to get the bumpers to fit better. On Friday the told me maybe three more weeks. Let's hope so because I am having withdrawns from being away from my car. But it has giving me time to work on my 1971 Chevy c10 a bit. Added a h pipe to the exhaust with left over pipe from the vette, electric fans, and few other odds and ends. Last night I was making a bracket for it and using a chop saw to cut some thick mettle and the blade broke catching the pice and smashing my hand. Today after church my wife and kids made me go to the hospital because one of my fingers is black, swollen and I can not move it, but luckily it was not broken. Glad I was wearing welding gloves.
Any good ideas on material for a hood liner?
Who sells the best weather stripping for the vette?
It is funny how my car has been at the paint shop for almost 3 months and from day 1 when I ask how much longer they say 2 to 3 weeks. But really they are really trying to make it look as best as they can so no complaints Just hard to wait......obsessing

LOL.....my '34 streetrod truck was at the painter 6 months (but the deal was---he would "work it into his busy schedule" (I think he wanted to do the job just to work on a '34 vehicle...LOL)" to keep the agreed price and to end up with better looking body work and paint job.....(even though I was "going bizerk internally"), The "wait" was more than worth it!

Mine is kinda the same deal that they are working on it when they have time. I am going to go by the shop and take a look at the progress tomorrow after work.
