The PTSD is starting again......but I did manage to do my first fiberglass repairs (NOT for the squeamish). I didn't bother sanding it smooth in case it doesn't bond. I DID brush some sandpaper over it after about 15 minutes and the high/rough spots came off easily....15 more minutes later the sandpaper produce soft powder......

I managed to get a bulge on the patch from being a rookie and pushing on the exterior where the hole was, then decided to quit before I patched the broken-off area at the trailing edge

I only needed it to be about 1/8" thick, rather than the 1/2"-3/4" thick that the previous owner's body shop applied.

I'll check it tomorrow night....if it all holds I will add a bonding strip across the deck underside.

Glad you are restoring this car to its original specs.

I can't even imagine why anyone would put plastic bumpers on a '68 Vert, when it would be cheaper just to buy a '74 or '75 Roadster.

However, I have heard of early Big block C3 Roadsters having really bad chassis twisting in low gear and their hoods popping up around 90 mph, however, since you are doing an in-depth body/frame restoration, you shouldn't have any issues. Hey built them very different in '68-'72.

Good luck!

(P.S. Are you going with side pipes?)

in 1978 it was cheaper to make a 78 convertible out of a used 10 year old 68 than it was to cut up a brand new 78. all depends when it was done but I've seen older model cars get upgraded with newer model stuff. it happens with all corvette for sure. Imagine a split window 63 in 65 66 was used and older so a window upgrade would update it an not many would notice it was an older model. My 76 has miscellaneous stuff from early c3 c5 and c6.

Ah yes , I see some sanding in your future. 80 grit will work just fine.

I guess in '76 no one was thinking that a '68 would be around in 2015.....LOL!

And I remember being told to Never buy a. '68 because they were "failed experiments"!

Default Sensing the End of an Era...

Doorgunner & RVZIO,

My morning routine for the past 18 months starting at 0530L has been:

1) Take a leak
2) Put on a pot of coffee
3) Take a leak
4) Read the sports section of the paper
5) Take a leak
6) Finish the paper
7) Take a leak
8) Login to CF
9) Scan "Views" looking for the 6 figure posts
10) Stop to read Doorgunner's & RVZIO's posts
11) Take a leak

With Doorgunner down to attaching the rear clip and paint; and RVZIO into the assembly mode...I'm not quite sure once your projects are completed how I'm going to adjust for that void other than continuing with # 1, 3, 5, 7, & 11 above!

I may need some serious CF consoling.

Regards,
Tom

Tom69.................Relaxxxxxx!
I'm only on Phase IV (Front Chrome Bumper Mod) and V (Rear Chrome Bumper Mod).........I still have to get to PHASE X!

I managed to do more patchwork on the deck and quarter panels this morning before errands started.

First I needed to test the previous patches/repairs that I did.....so being a doorgunner, I took a screwdriver and poke/prodded/stabbed the patches a few times......THEY HELD!

So I patched the rest of the damaged areas.....not pretty/but stout.....

Since our grandson just started driving he needed somewhere to park........

Now to sand all the patches down for the filler.

So......THAT'S where I went wrong !!!

I did a couple hours of sanding and tapering on the repairs today....rookie work at best, but the golfball/baseball-size holes where I ground out bondo patches are filled and sturdy...........

The nasty looking oversized antenna mounting hole is filled in........................

I sanded/attempted to smooth out the inner years of repairs rather than leave all the lumps and bumps.....................

I did another test-fit of the tail light clip/good thing that I did....I added too much fiberglass to the driver-side quarter panel when I made the repair/no problem---I'll trim 2" off the trailing edge.......

Since the Parts Pegboard is full, I found a safe place for the lower front and rear valences.................LOL............ .......

Now I need to do the repairs to the tail light clip on each corner where the bumpers bolt on, and fill in the side marker light opening since the others have already been filled in by the previous owner.

Actually......that's the Hybrid Powerplant.....

once I'm on the Interstate highway it will lower down and power the '68/should get around 70 mpg on the open road once the V8 is turned off!
