They pressure test square aluminum tanks at about 3 or 4 psi. First test fill with water and see where it leaks. DONT USE GAS!! You are gonna be welding a few pinholes at best.

Water it is......may test it at 5-10 psi since it's steel....that way there will be some easy-to-see geysers where any pinholes might be.

I finally finished welding the side panels and ground down the high spots on the welds.......all day....... .....

I basically wore myself out with the grinder and wasn't paying attention/focused. I stretched the air hose out of the garage to the tank........got the cover and machine screws ready.........

then realized that I NEVER tapped the 8 holes in the tank bottom that the cover will bolt to

Ohhhhhhh well..........tomorrow.....

DG,

I'm glad your GD (reverse DG) is better and I truly hope she stays that way! Our GD spent yesterday, last night and today with us and thankfully nothing anywhere close to that happened to her. Even without all the drama that you had, I still managed to do absolutely nothing on my car, unlike you! Keep pluggin' away at it and your car will be done in no time. I can't wait until I actually get to the point of actually reassembling something on mine and moving forward...

Naaaaaaaa Lou.....I used the zoom lense/the house is much smaller than the pic shows! The grass was dead and brown after three light frosts a few weeks ago.....but with warmer weather and two weeks of rain--it needs mowing again!

Thanks Paul....she felt good enough to go to school today/loves school!
I really had to force myself to work on the car/emotionally exhausted from the last few weeks.

About the car.............I needed to move the fuel tank so I could put the family car back in the garage.

So I thought to myself ( ) ..........I may as well give it a test fit while I'm moving it out of the way.

The blue tape across the lower-rear quarter panels marks how low the lower valence will reach.....the bottom of the tank will be "up and behind" the lower valence by about 2 inches/it will not be visible when looking at the car from the rear.....................

I will buy some heavy-wall square tubing this week and fabricate "crash bars" to protect and also to support the tank.

Just friggin wow. Every time I come into this thread I'm blown away. I laughed looking at your neighborhood thinking of you filling the tank with water, putting it under pressure, looking for all the leaks while your neighbors are driving by wondering if that is going to be some eyesore yard art that is going up in your front lawn.

As always, just incredible. Keep up the work. I can't wait to see the next installment of what you cut out/fabricate/etc.

Nick.

I would really prefer seeing the flange for the sending unit on top of the tank instead of the bottom.

I'll see if I can rotate and flip it.

I only have a couple hours this morning before going to appointments, so I did some threading and pressure testing........

I took an adapter with a small orifice and drilled the orifice so that my tap would fit snugly into the adapter........

When the adapter is placed on the tank over the drilled hole it holds the tap perpendicular to the hole so the threads will be cut straight and true...................

Tapping oil is necessary for smooth threads.................

High pressure air blows the fine metal particles away so the screws will not seize.........................

I'll post these now before the Reply "times out" causing the post to "disappear".

I test-fitted all the screws...............................

The cover is screwed into place.............

Since time was limited I did an air-only pressure test at 15 psi (just to be sure) and squirted a mixture of liquid soap/water on the seams.....

I found 11 pinholes which I will divot with a 5/16 drill (bit) then fill the divots with weld......the paper gasket also leaked in two spots/I have some thicker cork gasket that I will use.

Maybe I can do the repairs tonight.

Thanks b.k. ..........impressive attempt----but the craftsmanship>>>>

It seems that I forgot the basics of going slowly with the weld/watching the "puddle" to make sure it is not "thin". The last day/last half of welding only had one pinhole...........the first half of welding had 10 pinholes!

I'm working up the nerve to divot the marked pinholes and re-weld those spots!

EDIT: At least the rain is co-operating...LOL! It's starting to "monsoon" here again this week......so no fiberglass work will be done-----which is a good thing.....it keeps me to stay focused on finishing the fuel tank.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
S C A R E Y !!!!

I just realized I need to run to the hardware store to get some steel tubing/pipe nipples/fittings to do the next pressure test correctly.

Holding that air blower into the drain hole with one hand to pressurize the tank......spray bottle in the other hand to locate pinholes.....marking pen in teeth to circle leaks.....camera between kneecaps to get close-ups of pinholes........ isn't gonna' work this time around
