Will you be able to use the original location of the tank access in your deck or will it have to be further back. If so will youcut out the tank cover lid and re locate it?

Now THAT'S stout-looking sending unit with a thick base-plate!

I'm feeling a little better today (psychologically//emotionally) and will work on the tank access plate this morning.

It's been raining non-stop for the last 28 hours/last week it rained for 5 days off & on. I'm glad I checked out the flood-zone maps of the area before I bought this property!

I really want to keep the car's outward appearance and interior gauges/seats/etc. the same as a 1968 model. I will have to test-fit the tank into the frame to see exactly how I will install the filler neck into the top of the tank....

BUT.....I KNOW that I will leave the tank access lid in it's original location.....the filler tube routing----that's another matter--LOL!

that is the standard marine fuel tank sending unit and hole size. it is a 5 screw mount, for whatever stupid reason, but it is accepted and legal in a sealed boat bilge, so above the specs needed for passenger cars. and cheap and easy to get. I woulda made the tank out of aluminum...

Me too about aluminum....but I didn't want to spend half a day chasing down/setting up an account/renting a bottle of argon.

No Sir. Annnnnnnnnd if it was, the meds I take would bump it back down to Rookie.

Now.....however.........I CAN drill holes!

I laid out the bolt patterns and drilled the 8 holes to tap size for #10-32 threads/the holes will be used as guide-holes when I drill into the tank......I also drilled and tapped the 1/8" NPT drain hole......and drilled/countersunk the hole for the sender lead......

Then I centered the cover over the hole in the tank/then drilled through the tank with the tap-drill (bit)............

Then I re-drilled the holes in the cover so that the #10-32 screws would fit........

I am also fairly dangerous with a rattle-can...................

I need to buy a #10-32 tap/I have every size but that one .

Next I will make a bracket for the other side of the cover......then mount the sending unit to the bracket.

RATS.....I shouldn't have tried to weld "up-hill"! Down the right side........across the bottom.....up the left side/the welds looked worse on the top left side and need to be ground out/practice-practice-practice.........

REMINDER: Position the tank so that all welds are at waist level!

It was easier to split the panel in half to make sure the sending unit does not rub against the rear wall/shows the correct readings once I install it.....I laid the other half partially on the tank .....................

Thanks, but I'm going to "remove the chicken squat" (as my great-grandmother always said about the porch bannister)/skip my meds this morning/try again with the tank laying horizontally.....AFTER I run to the store to pick up a couple spools of welding wire . The bottom horizontal seam actually looked like an "official weld". Rookieness and 3 years of NOT welding are/is not a good combination

Annnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnd.....it's still raining, so it looks like I will finish the tanks before the weather /humidity is/are good enough to finish the nose fiberglassing.

Curious about your leak test... I wish you were close enough so I could let you use my bottle of Argon, I know I weld much better with gas.. Not saying you're doing a poor job mind you

Thanks Members....but the vertical welds ARE poor. I also just realized that I didn't remove the thin layer of black "oxide" that forms on sheetmetal.....it will make the wire "sputter" causing uneven welds

It isnt locked in place. Whichever weld works best, rotate the tank so weld is in that direction.

Tony, will you coat the inside of the tank with something? I wish that you could get it galvanized by someone for corrosion protection. Lou.

Doorgunner, gotta quit reading so many of your posts before bed. Last night I dreamed you and I were a pair of old codgers living in an assisted lining home and we went junking, bringing in all sorts of good stuff people were throwing with grand ideas of customization of our Vettes and rooms. You got the red and black stuff and I got the purple stuff. Needless to say, the facility and our families were not happy. Had some great ideas though! Anyway, be sure and repeat these two words everyday this week and it will help you feel better! - ROLL TIDE!!!
