I started cutting and fitting the fuel tank "cage" today........I cut and drilled the front crossbrace...........
I located the holes in the crossmember/drilled and installed bolts/bolted the crosspiece in place.........
I tacked the braces at the front of the tank in place and then tacked the underside support in place...a brace on each end (I will add a middle brace tomorrow)........
I will add the rear uprights and rear crosspiece tomorrow...............
Once all the pieces are tacked in place I will remove the cage from the car/finish welding the pieces/add rubber cushions to all areas where the tank will rest against/on the supports.

I added the two rear uprights to the tank cage today and put a thick layer of Rustoleum on the metal to prevent rusting.........
I still need to add a center support (Over-kill...but good protection in case of a rear-end collision) and then drill holes in the unpainted crosspiece so the whole assembly can be bolted to the car frame.......
I'll try to cut/fit the pieces for the center support before calling it a day.
Thanks R.R. The rear of the frame received previous damage decades ago...I will straighten the last 18" of the frame rails (which are offset to the passenger's side about 3/4") and will install a new rear crosspiece using the same rectangular heavy duty metal.......
The way GM should have done it 48 years ago (since the car was a basketcase when I bought it) I'm making needed safety improvements as I go along.

good idea. I hope the weather stays decent for your project while you are able to work on it. I assume you heard the new president has plans to deport 2-3 million criminal aliens, starting with the felons first.

I imagine quite a number of them will be going by a JPATS flight courtesy of the US Marshals. They'll be wearing belly chains, handcuffs and leg irons for the duration of the flight. Good enough for em!
