Good luck
You were right about a shorted ign. component/it finally failed when I reinstalled the 16* modified vacuum advance. I was craning the engine to test the mod/the distributor quit firing COMPLETELY!

That's what I was thinking too when I stomped into the house soaking wet with swea.....errrr.....perspiration......so I did some pricing!

New ignition parts for my Tach drive distributor... $100

Repro HEI Tach drive distributor.........................$250

IT WAS MY FAULT that I fried 2 modules because of the 45 year-old corroded engine harness/corroded harness terminals/the resistor wire "stub" at firewall connector that I spliced into.......live and learn.

Now that the firewall problems are corrected, new ign. parts should last.

I'll make the rounds at auto stores in the a.m. (no store has everything).......LOL

BUT......on the bright side.....the distributor went belly-up in the garage.....no towing charges or hitch-hiking required!

On the not-so-bright-side.....2 days chasing my tail....

but the Labor was Free!

Watching you with your distributor for the past three days would probably be classified as more of a comedy than documentary. With a mature 17 rating due to strong language, viewer discretion advised.
Good luck.

Good luck.

I RESEMBLE THAT REMARK! I spent most of the day pre-registering for my 100,000 mile check-up (VA complete physical this week )

BUT......things went well buying ignition/distributor parts....I found all the needed parts at two different stores on the same street

It looks as though I'll compromise and do a docucomedy with color photos.........IN my nice cool house at my nice clean kitchen island....

BUT DON'T TELL MY W-W-WIFE!

see you in a few hours.

Sounds good, good luck with check up, had my own comedy yesterday, if your power steering pulley has a threaded shaft and nut don't spend 2 hours getting pulley and gear pullers to try to remove.

Here we go. Since I finally corrected all the wiring problems (some self-induced) that led to the HEI failing twice in two years, I decided to replace all the internal-electrics in the distributor rather than continue chasing "fried modules/shorted coils/pick-up coils/resistors/broken terminal connectors/rabbits"....I will test all the removed components/label the good ones as SPARES/discard the faulty components.

(NOTE: I would not suggest that anyone "just replace all the electric components" in order to solve their problem. Testing the individual components would be the most economical way of solving any distributor problem)

Spark plug wires/Ignition switch wire/tach cable are removed from distributor and cap........

Distributor hold-down bolt/clamp are removed...distributor is pulled....

Steel dowel is used to drive roll pin out of lower gear.......

Gear and spacer(s) are removed....(one spacer is hidden from view/stuck to face of gear)........

Tach drive output gear assembly is removed...............

Lower end parts laid out............

Coil cover is removed........................

Coil/seal/carbon contact/distributor cap is removed..............

Rotor is removed..............................

Cap/rotor parts are laid out.........................

Distributor shaft assembly is removed (tach drive gear assy must be removed before shaft can be pulled up/out)......................

Vacuum assembly is removed....(I depressed the vacuum rod until it released from the pickup coil arm/NOTE: it would have been easier to remove the vacuum advance if I had removed the pickup coil first)......................

C-clip that holds pick-up coil in place is removed....(this is a sample c-clip since I didn't take a picture of the actual c-clip removal)................................ .......

Pickup coil is removed....................

Resistor and harness are removed.........................

Ignition module is removed..............

Internal electrics are laid out (oooops.....C-clip that holds down pickup coil is not shown in the photo).............................

Bare housing.....(you may be able to see the tiny groove on the outside of the upper support that the distributor shaft fits into-----and the same support that the pickup coil assemble slides onto)...................

It actually took longer to post and edit these pics than it did to remove/disassemble the fried distributor........I'll be back later with the new parts assembly pics.

**************************************** **************************************** **************************************** **********************************

INSTALLING NEW ELECTRIC COMPONENTS/RE-ASSEMBLING DISTRIBUTOR..............

The coil button with spring is installed inside the cap.........

The rubber washer/seal is installed around the button/spring.......

Paint is removed from the coil where the upper ground wire and lower ground strap will be located.............

The 4 mounting bolts are installed...............................

The coil cover is screwed in place..........

The pickup coil gets a dab of grease inside the bushing and is slid down in place/the thin black C-clip is snapped onto the housing to hold the pickup coil down/it's hard to see it with all the grease)....the white heat-transferring "grease"is coated where the ignition module will be screwed into place.............................

More assembly pics (I lost everything a minute ago, so I'm posting in segments this time)

The pickup coil is plugged into the ignition module which is plugged into the radio noise suppressor/external wiring harness.......

The assembled parts are screwed inside the distributor housing.........

The modified vacuum advance is connected to the pickup coil arm and screwed into place....(I am applying vacuum to the advance to make sure it travels freely without any binding..................

The distributor shaft is re-installed into the housing...........................

A "glob" of wheel bearing grease is added to the tach drive housing......

The tach drive output gear assembly is about to be re-installed (I used a previous pic since I forgot to take an actual pic)

The correct thickness thrust spacers are slid onto the bottom of the distributor shaft in order to have .020" up/down movement of the shaft in the housing..........

The lower drive gear is in place with the gear-pin hole and the shaft hole lined up....the pin is ready to be tapped into place.....

The pin is driven flush...................................

The rotor has been re-installed........................

The cap is re-installed/the module harness is plugged in............
Th

The distributor has been balanced......(just kidding!)....it DOES look sharp on my wife's granite counter top though

"You Guys!"

I just spent an hour consolidating the separate posts into one rebuild-post.

I still haven't removed the lower drive gear and re-installed it correctly (worn out from 102*F temp in the garage all day/92*F in said garage last night at 8:30p.m. WITH A FLOOR FAN ON "HIGH"!

EDIT: I also added the final re-assembly pics to the dist. rebuild post.

Thanks for showing this Tony. It makes mine look a little less intimidating if I have to do a rebuild.

That post needs to be copied into it's own thread in Tech/Performance, and then stickied! Good work DG!

Totally agree, now let's finish this lesson properly. We need to see the proper way to locate TDC, how to clock the distibutor and how to set timing for all in before 3500 rpms.

I don't think his house has enough rooms for all of that.

I can't stand the pressure!!!

Now I need to put double doors in the house entrance-way and move the living room furniture over 5 feet to have room to walk around the car once I park it inside (I'm just glad I repaired that transmission fluid drip)!

My wife agreed to upgrade to double entrance doors!

She did not agree to parking the car in the living room

On another note, I spent an entire day getting MY 100,000 mile Checkup/PHYSICAL.....I won't even go into detail about the two extra procedures that they did to my torso so I'll be "on jackstands" tomorrow

So.....the distributor re-install will wait until Saturday

As for the 15" steering wheel upgrade.....my damaged right rotator-cuff really appreciates the upgrade.....it is just like power steering now when turning into parking spaces and navigating crowded parking lots!

I hate going to the VA, the last idiot who drew blood from me left a bruise on my arm twice the size of a half dollar, he shoved the needle through my vein, then pulled it half way out and started rooting around trying to find it, Stevie Wonder could find my veins!!!
