Unless you want pictures of my hair, I have no more shades of grey to show.

caskiguy, meticulous me? Barely

I have switched back to the mechanical side of things since the last post. Are you ready for an onslaught of pictures?

Default Balancer install

The first order of business was to install the balancer. I put it on an oil heater for a while and then immediately applied anti-seize & slid it in with the special tool. Smooth like butter.

Default Engine install

Next came the engine install using my wooden apparatus. No problem.

Default Transmission pilot bearing install

This required more force than I wanted. I should have put it in the freezer for a while before install.

Default Bellhousing to crankshaft alignment

I measured a misalignment of 0.003" with the stock dowels.
The maximum being 0.005" I did not have to use offset dowels.

Default Clutch install

After installation the plastic alignment tool went in and out without friction. Important for the transmission install phase to come.

Default Hydraulic bearing cushion gap

The required cushion gap is between 0.150" and 0.200". With the right shimming I ended up with 1.940" - 1.770" = 0.170". Should be fine.

Default Mini starter shimming

The clearance must be between 0.030" and 0.060". I used the typical high-tech paperclip for that adjustment.

Default Transmission install

Next came the actual transmission installation. It required quite a bit of wiggling and made me sweat but ultimately went in all the way.

Default Engine and transmission shimming

Once all that was done Doug's side pipe brackets would not align with the 4 chassis slots. They would not align in the horizontal plane and not in the vertical plane. Damn.

To address that
- I added washers on the driver side engine mount (grade 8, 1/8" thick, 1" diameter).
- I raised the rear of the transmission by about 5/8".
I could fit both side pipes at that point.

I am concerned about clearance issues when I put the body on the chassis given all this shimming.

Anyways, other than that I have been working on the electrical system design and purchasing parts for it (cables, wires, cable splitter, fuses, fuse holders, fuse blocks, relays, relay holders, toggle switches, wiper toggle switch, toggle switch guards, engine start push button, key switch, shrink tubing, ring terminals, cable crimper)
That will be the subject of future posts...

Thanks for taking a peek!

Since you raised the rear of the trans 5/8" I would carefully check the driveline angle, at the trans output and the diff input. Get it wrong and you will have vibration.

Default Driveshaft angle measuring

I hear you Leigh, and I had tried to measure the angles.

The driveshaft angle is trivial:

But what are good spots for the transmission and differential?

You need positions that are parallel to the axles.

On the transmission side, what is a meaningful position? A? B? C? D? etc...

Same for the differential side. What is a reliable position for the measuring tool so that it's parallel to the hidden axle?

I didn't feel like anything I measured other than the driveshaft itself was reliable, so I gave up and intended to drive it, see if there are any vibrations and in the positive put a shim at the differential side. Back to a drive test and repeat until I find the sweet shimming.

P.S.: Maybe these two front and rear tool positions are acceptable? Are these two surfaces parallel to the two axles?

I shimmed mine - clearance and drive line angles were just fine
