You didn't say what year your working on, so I'm guessing it's an 82, based on your Forum name???

If so, the 82 upper hose is (or was a few months ago), still available from Chevrolet. The part number for the 82 upper hose is 14016075.

I thought a bad hose bursts not collapses. It sounds like you have a problem with the coolant recovery system being blocked. As the coolant cools instead of drawing fluid back into the cooling system the hose collapses.

Radiator hoses are under pressure when in function so a collapse is ?

I also will be replaceing the radiator cap.It may not be releasing pressure. If all that does not work I will do a radiator flush.I just got the car out of storage.could there be air in the system? Will work on it this week.thanks for the replys.

Another quick and easy test, pull your radiator cap off and start your motor and watch for flow. I'm assuming you have a 180 degree thermostat and when it opens at 180, you should see water flowing inside your radiator. if not, your thermostat is stuck in the close position.

The hose collapses due to atmospheric pressure being greater than internal pressure. This will only occur during the cool down process when the system attempts to suck coolant back into the radiator. So either the center valve on the radiator cap is blocked or the hose going to the coolant recovery tank. The system self purges any air by forcing it out into the coolant recovery tank.

The UPPER hose is the PRESSURE hose...so it can't collapse when the water pump is turning-- unless the water pump isn't pumping.

The lower hose [suction side of pump] is the one with concern of collapsing when engine is at elevated RPM's.

The collapse can happen when the vacuum valve on the radiator pressure cap does not draw the engine coolant back into the radiator. This happens when the engine and engine coolant cool off. Remember that engine coolant expands when its at operating pressure and retracts when cool.
