My engine compartment wiring was a mess when I did my restoration. One of the smartest things I did was replace it all. Check out one of the Corvette houses for your kit, the engine compartment was less than 200, another 200 for the headlights and fiber optics and it was a very clean set up. No mess and it all works correctly with no shorts.
Wow. Some pretty nice engine compartments in this thread! I'm slowly getting mine back into shape on the 76. Not a total mess - just a few years of "lack of attention to detail by the previous owner" - I guess would be the best way to put it. I'm going to save a few of these pics !

If you want wiring like it was when built at the factory, follow the detailed drawings in the AIM. If you don't care that they are routed per stock specs, just clean wiring well with lacquer thinner on rag and route them how you think they will look good.
If the wiring is cobbled-up, you can re-do splices PROPERLY (wiring 'snaked' together, soldered, and shrink tubing) or you can purchase new wiring harness[es].
